Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Inventories (Inventarios) and wills

2018-07-26 Thread Hana Johnson
Aloha Cheri,

Thank you for posting this information. I had come across it before but
could not remember where or how to get back there.

I entered "Hansa" in the search engine and got a list of all the passengers
who came to Hawaii on that steam ship. There was my
great-great-grandmother's full name Francisca Jacintha Candida de Jesus
from Ginetes; which is barely legible on the hand written passport records.
My mother remembers her full name but some of my cousins insist that she is
wrong and doubt the only document that I had found. Now there are two!

The big bonus is that it is easy to read and now I might be able to
discover the other family members who came with them and went to Maui
instead of Kauai where my Portuguese ancestors settled.

Mahalo nui loa!

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Inventories (Inventarios) and wills

2018-07-26 Thread Hilda Soares
Thank you all for this valuable information. I'm going to give this a try
to see if I can get any details on my maternal grandmother. Unfortunately
she was born after the cutoff when all registeries were moved from the
churches to the Government. My mother's memory isn't as good as I would
like it so she can't provide me with any dates of birth or even age of
death. I am hoping (fingers crossed) that this inventory will include her
death obit as well as cause of death as we suspect it was breast cancer.

Thanks again for your help.

2018-07-25 Thread Cheri Mello
Elaine S,

You'd have to find out if an inventory exists. If it does, it could name
the children, their spouses, where they lived, and if property was owned,
someone had to dispose of it. Later ones include a copy of the Civil
Registry death and that lists the cause of death. Cheri

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Inventories (Inventarios) and wills

2018-07-25 Thread Joseph Mendonca
Hilda, all I did at the time was send them an email explaining the type of
information (of genealogical value) I was seeking from the record. I then
referenced the record by copying the information from their Archeevo
catalog and pasted it in the email.

Letting them know the type of information I was searching for allowed them
to recommend that only the first 17 pages of the "inventory" would be of
value to me. Otherwise I might have spent a lot of extra money purchasing
the additional 187 pages with no genealogical info.

I'm not sure if it was the "proper way" as I had no previous instruction on
how to proceed, but here was my initial letter.

Joseph Mendoca,

Can you provide me with a sample letter/wording that I can use to order the
inventory catalogue that I found on this site for my Grandmother and Great
Grandmother? Also, who would I address this request? I am hoping they can
send the images to my email address as well.

Catalog at http://www.arquivos.azores.gov.pt/ I don't know how to
find them for other islands. I don't think the other archives entered them
or perhaps the inventories or wills are not housed at the other archives.

The inventories and wills varied a lot and from time period to time
period. The more recent ones were better, as they were more organized and
 followed a format.

They started with a cover page, naming the deceased and who was in
charge of their inventory. Some had maybe 7 pieces of paper (so potentially
14 pages of information). Some had 144 pieces of paper (288 pages of
information). The more "recent" ones (1920s forward) had a copy of the
death certificate with the cause of death listed. Or the best that medicine
knew for that time period. They named children, grandchildren,
great-grandchildren if they had any. If you can read the births and
marriages, then you already know the words of "filhos" and "netos."
"Bisnetos" are the great-grandchildren. Some listed relatives on the
paternal side "pelo lado paterno" or the maternal side "pelo lada materna,"
Anytime I saw the word "familia" I scanned the page. Some listed what I
believe were people they owed. Some listed what they owned, as in the
furnishings and whatnot. My 2 great-grandmother's had a declaration from
her husband. I don't know what it says yet. I'm waiting on my cousin to
tell me. And there was a lot of legal stuff in there too.

The earliest will/inventory that I looked at was from 1807. Some exist
 from the 1700s.

Not every ancestor will have an inventory or will. You didn't need to
own property to have an will or inventory. As I said, it appeared that one
guy owed a lot of people a lot of money.

They allowed me to take pictures with my camera (found out I need a
different pair of reading glasses to take pictures). They said that the
inventories are NEVER to be posted anywhere on the Internet. That means
 Ancestry.com, Geni.com, My Heritage, FamilySearch.org, your own
personal page, etc. They consider the inventories private Yes, I understand
that if the person died in 1807, no one alive today was mentioned in that
will. But they have their rules. I said it was going to be left on my
computer so I could consult it. I would extract only genealogy information
from the documents, but would never post an image of any them. So for those
utilizing the inventories/wills, do NOT post them ANYWHERE on the Internet

Yes Cheri, that inventory I ordered had a wealth of family information. It
had his children and their ages, his wife, his parents and step-mother, his
grandparents, death certificate, birth certificate, addresses, etc.

I have kept all of the email correspondence regarding that order for future
reference. Being my first time I wasn't sure how to proceed.

It was great to find out that they would scan the documents and email them!

Thank you for sharing the links. There are also ebooks and journals that
are interesting to read in Google Books and Internet Archives. I came
across a Volumes 4, 8, and 12 of Arquivos Açorianos in Google Books. They
are interesting and help me to understand the place and lives of my
ancestors. Even if one doesn’t read Portuguese, with a dictionary and Bing
translator one can slowly figure it out. Here is the link to Volume 8 of
Arquivos Açorianos:

That link does not have the inventories or wills and it does not
contain the images of them. They were very explicit about NOT putting the
inventories/wills online. They stated to me that the inventories/wills are

really be invading their privacy, as all the descendants are also deceased.

Perhaps the staff is not aware of all the Arquivo contains. There's a lot
of content not just indexing. It all depends what you are searching for.
There are transcripts and there are documents with digital representation,
meaning they can be viewed and downloaded, unfortunately it's all in
Portuguese. The search parameter is not easy to use.

Here's the link to a transcript, accounting for Horta's 1874 expostos,
budget etc

http://www.arquivos.azores.gov.pt/details?id=1240760

Here's a digital representation of genealogical nature, they may have done
it either as a sample. Ribeira Grande, Estrela baptisms

http://www.arquivos.azores.gov.pt/viewer?id=1021142&FileID=1

Here's quite a bit of information of the Family Campos Medeiros

http://www.arquivos.azores.gov.pt/details?id=1347047

etc.

So for those
utilizing the inventories/wills, do NOT post them ANYWHERE on the Internet
or you mess it up for future genealogists.

Hopefully the other archives will get their inventories/wills up on the
 Archives Catalog.

Joe M,

They explicitly stated that the inventories are NOT to be on the Internet.
If they were on the Internet they would not have told me NOT to post any of
the images online.

You have to go there to view them or hire a researcher. That's the only
ways I know of. Cheri

[AZORES-Genealogy] Inventories (Inventarios) and wills

2018-07-22 Thread Cheri Mello
While I was in Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel island, I made extensive use of
the inventories or wills. I was able to find them on the Archives Catalog
at http://www.arquivos.azores.gov.pt/ I don't know how to find them for
other islands. I don't think the other archives entered them or perhaps the
inventories or wills are not housed at the other archives.

The inventories and wills varied a lot and from time period to time period.
The more recent ones were better, as they were more organized and followed
a format.

They started with a cover page, naming the deceased and who was in charge
of their inventory. Some had maybe 7 pieces of paper (so potentially 14
pages of information). Some had 144 pieces of paper (288 pages of
information). The more "recent" ones (1920s forward) had a copy of the
death certificate with the cause of death listed. Or the best that medicine
knew for that time period. They named children, grandchildren,
great-grandchildren if they had any. If you can read the births and
marriages, then you already know the words of "filhos" and "netos."
"Bisnetos" are the great-grandchildren. Some listed relatives on the
paternal side "pelo lado paterno" or the maternal side "pelo lada materna,"
Anytime I saw the word "familia" I scanned the page. Some listed what I
believe were people they owed. Some listed what they owned, as in the
furnishings and whatnot. My 2 great-grandmother's had a declaration from
her husband. I don't know what it says yet. I'm waiting on my cousin to
tell me. And there was a lot of legal stuff in there too.

The earliest will/inventory that I looked at was from 1807. Some exist from
the 1700s.

Not every ancestor will have an inventory or will. You didn't need to own
property to have an will or inventory. As I said, it appeared that one guy
owed a lot of people a lot of money.

They allowed me to take pictures with my camera (found out I need a
different pair of reading glasses to take pictures). They said that the
inventories are NEVER to be posted anywhere on the Internet. That means
Ancestry.com, Geni.com, My Heritage, FamilySearch.org, your own personal
page, etc. They consider the inventories private Yes, I understand that if
the person died in 1807, no one alive today was mentioned in that will. But
they have their rules. I said it was going to be left on my computer so I
could consult it. I would extract only genealogy information from the
documents, but would never post an image of any them. So for those
utilizing the inventories/wills, do NOT post them ANYWHERE on the Internet
or you mess it up for future genealogists.

Hopefully the other archives will get their inventories/wills up on the
Archives Catalog.
