Bob,

We are related through Antonio Goulart Rosa d 1781.  My Maternal Grandfather
Manuel Jose b. 11/29/1885 in Lajes do Pico. Came to the U.S. and settled a few
places in Calif. but ended up in San Diego, CA.  We are probably related on my
Paternal Grandmothers side also as they also lived many years in Lajes do
Pico.  Manuel Jose's father was Manuel Jose Floria b. 1861 d. 1942 in Lajes.

I think we are cousins of some sort.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Gayle,
Thank you very much for the website tip. I was able to confirm my
grandfather's Lajes do Pico family from his and his sister's birthdates (which
I knew). Traced back to 5X greatgrandparents :Antonio Goulart Rosa (d.1781) and
Maria Piedade (d.1770).
I thought I could get information on my grandmother's town by dividing the
URL and adding "Bandeiras". It didn't work, however. Do you happen to know of
the home website where I can enter other Pico towns?

        Thanks Again, Bob bob.ross...@gmail.com

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Joaquim Francisco Avila Attn: Gayle

2012-09-21 Thread goodwnos
Bob,

The main website for NEPS is: www.neps.ics.uminho.pt/

When it comes up, go to the word Genealogias with the cursor and a pull-down
menu will appear. Move the cursor to the word Acores and you'll see another
menu appear to the right. Go to Ilha do Pico. Not all islands are listed yet,
nor are all villages from each island that is show. :-(

Or, you can go directly to Pico's section by using:
www.neps.ics.uminho.pt/ilhadopico.html

Next, you'll see a map. Move the cursor to the section (concelho) of the
island you want to search, e.g. Madalena. A new page will appear with the
villages (freguesias) listed. These are links, so click on the one you want,
e.g. S. Mateus e S. Caetano . Somewhere down the page will be an arrow with the
words "clique aqui para aceder as Genealogias" so simply click on the arrow.
The page that follows will be in Portuguese and is ready to enter a name in the
box to conduct your search. However, if you want the page in English, then
click on the Union Jack flag. Or, pick any other language associated with one
of the flags pictured. You're now ready to go to town with your searches. Be
sure to try different combinations of names, sometimes leaving one out.
Usually, its spelling is not an issue. The website will recognized Silveira and
Sylviera as the same name. Note: if you click on any of the small arrows that
show up on the results pages, it'll take you back to the beginning of the
search and erase the person's name making you start all over again. I simply
use my browser's button which allows me to go forward/back a page. For me, its
less frustrating.

Now, the bad news: Bandeiras is not listed as a separate village. You'll find
it included with Madalena and Candelaria under Concelho da Madalena. If you
find your grandmother's family and it spreads into Candelaria, be sure to get
back to me as that's where my grandmother was raised.

Hope my instructions help. If not, let me know and I'll try again.

Gayle

Hello Linda,
I have some some coincidences in my searches to yours (though there are
stumbling blocks, too):
Both of my maternal grandparents were born on Pico. Adelaide Caroline Costa,
my grandmother, came to the U.S. in 1910 and was from Bandeiras. Antonio Inacio
de Brum, my grandfather came in 1892 and was from Lages do Pico. His last name
was Americanized [and misspelled] from Inacio to Enas.
My grandfather's maternal grandmother was a Maria Macedo. I only have a date
for her death, 1893. Trouble is that I have a Antonio Louis Bettencourt as her
spouse, not Joaquim Francisco Avila. If your Maria and my Maria were similar in
age, my Maria could have been biologically able to give birth to a daughter
(also named Maria) who gave birth to my grandfather in 1879. (maybe?)
Anyway, everyone in my grandfather's family was from Lages do Pico and I
only know of his sister moving to the U.S. Antonio's family (Enas) settled in
Visalia, California. Antonio's sister (Mrs. Joseph Pedro), settled in
Pendleton, Oregon.
Good Luck on your search. I've found there are popular names that seem to
be used over again for different reasons. Lages seems like a small place with
"dozens and dozens of cousins". Bob Ross
