[AZORES-Genealogy] Name Abbreviation on Marriage Record

2017-01-05 Thread 'Jeremy G. B-C' via Azores Genealogy
Hello!

I just unearthed the marriage record of one set of ancestors of mine. It
is fairly neat writing and I don't have much trouble deciphering most of it.

I can make out that on November 27th 1779, Antonio de Quadros son of Antao
Pereira de Quadros and Maria Ascencao (deasesed) married to Anna Pereira de
Borba daughter of Simao Pereira de Cunha (deceased) and Maria (deceased).

I *am* however having trouble making out Anna (the bride's) mother's last
name Gil? It looks like an abreviation for something whatever it is
I am certiain I am misreading it. If anyone has any thoughts on it please
let me know!

The only other thing I would like to verify is that the grooms mother is
deceased, not the grooms father. I usually see defuncto after the parents
names, but in this case it is before her name am I correct that she is
the one that is deceased, and that Antao is living?

Thank you very much!

*Jeremy B-C*

2017-01-05 Thread Cheri Mello
Bride's mom...Maria Gil, both parents deceased.

As for which of the groom's parents are deceased...It's supposed to be
AFTER the name, unless both are deceased, then it's after her name and has
"defunctos" with the S. Your record? Three words: Too much vinho.
Seriously though, I'm not sure what he meant. Look for a sibling of the
groom getting married to figure it out.

Awesome!
Thank you so much Cheri! I really appreciate the clarification. Figures that
my record should be an oddball. ;-) my luck!
I'm amazed it really was Gil! I'd never seen that and due to its shortness I
had assumed it was an abreviation. Is Gil a fairly rare last name?

Jeremy, I agree with Cheri, the name is Gil and it's certainly a surname
although James Guill's book The Azores Island, a History, spells it with
two 'L's'. I think that the wife is dead because he says 'sua mulher, da
funta (with an 'a') Maria ...

have come across a few families. It is Gil. It can be derived from a

Anyway, I have Nunes Gil in my Sao Jorge ancestry. (Norte Grande.) Not sure

I am however having trouble making out Anna (the bride's) mother's last
name Gil? It looks like an abreviation for something whatever it is I
am certiain I am misreading it.  If anyone has any thoughts on it please let me
know!

The only other thing I would like to verify is that the grooms mother is
deceased, not the grooms father.  I usually see defuncto after the parents
names, but in this case it is before her name am I correct that she is the
one that is deceased, and that Antao is living?

Thank you very much!

I've seen Gil somewhere, but I couldn't tell you where (probably this list).
I don't think it's very common.

Awesome!
Thank you so much Cheri! I really appreciate the clarification. Figures
that my record should be an oddball. ;-) my luck!
I'm amazed it really was Gil! I'd never seen that and due to its shortness
I had assumed it was an abreviation. Is Gil a fairly rare last name?

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Name Abbreviation on Marriage Record

2017-01-07 Thread Donald Vasconcelos
There was a Gil family from the Azores who emigrated to Lawrence, MA in the
1950's. I remember the daughter being Maria Gil, and a son Frank Gil. Don't
know which island they were from.
You might want to check the US census in 1950.

U.S. Censuses are not released for public viewing until 72 years after the
census was taken. So the 1950 won't be released until sometime in 2020. You
have a few more years to wait. Cheri
