Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] RELIGIOUS NAMES

2014-02-28 Thread Cheri Mello
You will find women without any surname from the mid-1800s through 1910
approximately. They are recorded in marriage and death only with their
first and middle names and many times that middle name was religious. I'm
not sure if they picked it at communion or confirmation. I think they
picked it and not their parents.

Once you go back beyond the mid-1800s, you will find women having surnames
again.

RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] RELIGIOUS NAMES

2014-02-28 Thread pico
Actually, some adult men did use only these devotional names. One popular example is Nascimento, such as Jose do Nascimento. It usually starts because they were born or baptized on or near Christmas day. And this one quite often becomes a surname in subsequent generations.Santos can start by birth or baptism near All Saints Day.Another is one I typed up last night - Manuel da Piedade in Terceira. And in Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel, there are many examples of men using as their surname "de Jesus" and nothing else.Another is something like Francisco de Sao Miguel. But it is certainly the exception for men and one is left with the impression that just women did it.Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico & Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Why do just women have names with "da Conceição," "de Jesús," "do Coração," etc.? I noticed that these names were not on their baptismal records. Were they First Communion or Confirmation names? Did they or their parents chose the names? Thanks. Carmen
