[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: How to spell a portuguese surname

2009-01-17 Thread Vivian Christy
Hello All,

I have a relative who's name I wrote down as:  Mary Pavo.  I spelled it the way
it sounded but now I am trying to find it in the records and am not sure if the
spelling is correct.  Can someone tell me if this is the correct spelling for
that name?  Thank you and any help is appreciated.

I would say that if the name was pronounced in English like PAY-VOH, then it
would be PAVÃO in Portuguese, pronounced PUH-VOW with that ow soundding like
the ou in hound or the ow in down. Paiva would be pronounced PIE-VUH.

Guida, Lionel, Jason and Marralha, Thank you all for your input.

I think the way it was pronounced to me in English was PA-VO.  I was looking in
the Mass, Vital Records Archives to find a Frank Roderick Silva and Mary Pavo
married in about 1903 in Cambridge.  Could not come up with anything on her to
match the Frank Silva's I found. So I will go back and try all the different
names.  Thank you all for all your help.  Vivian

Hi Vivian'

The name is usually spelled as Pavao. Hope this is helpful. On some census
lists it was mistakenly written as Parvo because that is how it is pronounced
in Portuguese. I think that you will find it as Pavao.

Hi Joanne,  Thanks for the info.  I will try that name also.  I need to go back
to the ship records to see if I can find her coming into this country at that
time also 1903 because she had come over to this country from the Azores to
marry my great grandfather Frank R. Silva.  I know I still have relatives I
have not found in Mass. so I keep looking.  Thank you again.  Vivian (Silva)
