[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: 1800's Azores immigration and my Gregario/Gregorio relatives

2009-01-18 Thread Kathy

Hi Edgar,
Thank you so much for all of it, did you get the email I sent
through the groups? I think you've hit the nail on the head with
those records, it all seems to match up perfectly to much of the
family info I have. To be honest I never thought to put in Fisher,
rather than the Gregario/Gregorio which is the name they were known by
according to family notes. My grandmother will be so excited to see
all this info that has been found so far for her family. Thank you so
much Edgar, you've been awesome.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: 1800's Azores immigration and my Gregario/Gregorio relatives

2009-01-16 Thread Kathy

Hi Edgar,
That looks like it could be them, Manuel (Manuelo) was my Mary's
younger brother and has many descendants all over the US now. The
fifth living child if this is the correct family would be my Mary, who
was married in 1895 to William Hamilton.

This would be the first I've heard of any other siblings, which would
be an awesome discovery, and yet another welcome addition to the twigs
of the family tree.
Thank you so much for that input. . .

I searched further census in Mass but am coming up blank for them,
can't quite figure out why, any suggestions?

Thanks again,
Kathy

   Gregario/Gregorio relatives

Am a little bit of a newer researcher in this link in my families
past, and am curious about something.  Why was there seemingly so much
Portuguese immigration in the 1800's?  I've seen a number of posts
from people regarding their ancestors coming from the Azores during
the 1800's, and one of my ancestors is included in that number.

His name was Joao Gregario(Gregorio) and from the tales that were
passed down he was a fisherman.  He had 2 known children at this
point:  Mary Augusta Fisher (my ancestor, she adopted this name
because her father was a fisherman) and Manuel Gregorio.  He was said
to have been born in the Azores, Flores.  He married Maria de Jesus
Salvador, sometime around the 1850's perhaps in Boston, MA.  His son
Manuel was born Aug 21 1883, in Boston, Massachusetts and daughter
Mary was born sometime around 1876 also in Boston, so his immigration
would have been sometime before 1876.

The information given to me regarding this families background is very
limited at this point, but what happened in the Azores that it would
seem so many left in the 1800's?

Would love to learn more about the history, so maybe I can learn more
about the reasons behind them coming over during this time period.

   Thanks,
