[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Christmas Day in the Azores

2011-04-04 Thread Dano
Ginger,
You should be able find the actual date of your Grandfather's birth/
baptism as recorded on the parish or civil register. Most Portuguese
parish and civil registry records were microfilmed by LDS for the
period you mention. All you need is a few facts about the family,
where they lived, the ability to read Portuguese, and access to an LDS
Family History Center.

Thank you all for your insight.  It is appreciated.

So, with Christmas being celebrated on 25 December since 1582, I guess
that it would be my Grandfather's correct birthday.

Oh, in my original post I meant to key in 1875 not 1975.   Sorry about
 that.

   Hello Group,

In reading some of the archived posts, I have discovered that in 1975
Christmas Day was celebrated on January 6th in the Azores. Does
anyone know how long that practice continued?

The reason I ask is that there is a problem with my paternal
Grandfather's USA Marriage Record. He stated that he was born on
Christmas Day 1882 and that he was 21 years old. The clerk wrote down
his birthday as 25 December 1882. My Grandmother stated she was 20
years old and her birthday was 3 November 1882.

So, if he was born the 25th of December that would actually make him
slightly younger than his wife. I'm wondering if he may have really
been born on 6 January 1882, in which case he would have been 21 at
the time they married on 24 July 1903.

Although he always celebrated his birthday on the 25th of December, if
he was told he was 'born on Christmas Day' it would explain the
   conflict on his marriage record.

Was the tradition of celebrating Christmas on the 6th of January in
the Azores still in effect in 1882?

   Thanks for your help.
