Doreen, You can always use Gedcom to bring over the data from FTM to RM and then you'll have to do some cleaning. I'm not entirely sure, but RM may have created their own "GenBridge" type program to read directly from another program into RootsMagic. Google: rootsmagic direct import ftm and browse the choices. Here's one: http://support.rootsmagic.com/entries/451462-Converting-from-Family-Tree-Maker-to-RootsMagic You will do less cleanup with a direct import than with Gedcom. I can't remember exactly where you live, but there are several RootsMagic User Groups. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family tree make and large genealogy reports
I too had the problem with an error indicating the file was too large and was clipped. Each time I tried to rerun the report it clipped it to less pages. FTM said to clear files out of the computer to make space. I did that and it did not help. I had a professional do it for me so it would give additional space. That did not help. I upgraded. That did not help. I purchased a new computer, installed only FTM and linked the tree to it. That work but with problems. I too have a very large file with approx. 10,000. I too only asked for direct lines and no duplicate lines. The problem is that it fails to recognize that some of the lines are duplicated so when you get to the last 150 pages they are the same lineage repeated. I had contacted FTM through out this whole process. It was almost a year ago that they were going to look at my tree to see why I had this problem. I guess you can say that I'm still waiting for their response. After several months I did try to contact them several times but they did not respond. I also had a web page through their "my family". Many of the features failed to work and I had nothing but problems with it. They finally closed that program down. Sad to say I'm still with FTM. I know that Joao Ventura uses it but he has a much older version and he has created several books for me that are 750-850 pages and they are outstanding. They are complete and without repeats. The last one even has an index. I think I need to get a new genealogy program but I'm not looking forward to entering 10,000 people into the new data base. I have the copy of Roots Magic that I won at the Azorean Conference in SLC 2014. I'm afraid that if download the data and I do not re-enter everything that I may get the problem in the new program. Does anyone have any suggestions on this topic? Doreen On Wed, Aug 12, 2015 at 11:18 AM, Pam Santos wrote: > Thanks all will try it. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family tree make and large genealogy reports
Hi Cheri and all, I also have Family Tree Maker 3 and have upgraded for many years. My file now has 71501 people in it. There is a problem when I try to make a report that is more then 12 generations. I have to select "Exclude children" to get one more generation. So they need to correct this error, but have not yet. Older Family Tree Programs allowed me to go back as far as I wanted to go. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family tree make and large genealogy reports
I am still using it. Switched to the Mac version last year. My file contains over 50,000 people. When you run reports, you can be specific. Like Rick said, the report might be trying to include everyone in the tree. I've never had that issue of crashing.
