his practice. at 174 Hanover Street.

There were a number of early ones in New Bedford and Fall River, but I do
not know if any of the records survived. Monte Pio may, since it was still
in existence as of a few years ago. I have one such collection in the
Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese American Archives - the Associacao Benificente
Alianca Portuguesa of Fall River, which may have had New Bedford residents
as members, but the dates are 1924-1999. Id be happy to look up any names
that fall within that period.
Organizations that I know existed are:
Monte Pio Luso-americano (1882-Present), New Bedford
Associacao de S. Jose Benevolente Protectora e Caridade, Fall River
(1888-1930s)
Real Associacao Autonomica Micalense de Massachusetts, New Bedford
(1895-1936)
Fraternidade Portuguesa, New Bedford (1897-?)
Socorro Mutuo das Damas Portuguezas (1898-?) women only
Our Lady of Lourdes Benevolent Association, Fall River (early
1900s-past-1920s)
Portuguese Mutual Association of Our Lady of Light, Fall River,
1909-present
St. Michael the Archangel Society, Fall River (early 1900s-post 1920s)
St. Catherine Benevolent Society, Fall River (1905-196?)
Portuguese Continental Union, various lodges, (1925-present)
