[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Fraternal organizations

2009-02-28 Thread Ginger

Judy,

Thank you very much for the list of organizations and offer to look
for names in your records. You are awesome.

I will try to first contact any of the New Bedford orgs that may help
my search. However, the records you have access to may not include
the names I am looking for, because these folks left Massachusetts in
1918.

Thanks again.

Ginger

[AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Fraternal organizations

2009-02-28 Thread Maria Lima
Dear Group:

I was able to find one copy of a souvenir program that might behelpfu. I
know I have a couple of magazines but they're in some box that I still
haven't unpacked. Hope this helps someone. I'll give a bit of info from
the first few pages in hopes it helps someone and will provide names if you
want'.

*Fraternidade Portugueza dos Estados Unidos d'America,
Festa Annual Domingo 3 de Setembro de 1911
Promovida pele Ramo Numero 15 Victoria
Peabody, Mass
Programma Official e Souvenir*

The organizers of the Portuguese Faternity were:

Manuel M. Travossos
Francisco Oiveira Soares
Francisco Goulart Jorge

There's a good picture of these three organizers on the first page.
There's a write up about its first president: Antonio Zeferino. with
photograph.

There are many ads and photos of the Portuguese businessmen and
professionals of the day. My husband's grandfather was a dentist (Tufts
dental School) and has a half page ad with picture and of course, address of
his practice. at 174 Hanover Street.

There's history of the different Ramos or branches? and names of its
first members which was originally only for Michaelenses or those from Sao
Miguel. It started in Cambridge, MA 14 February 1836. There's 37 names
listed.

Sociedade Protectora Lusitania de Boston, Mass. founded 31 January 1904 in
Union Hall, Blackstone St started with 20 members

Ramo No 2: organized 13 June 1897 with 52 members; its founder: Frank C.
Basconcellos. Its presidentes were Manuel V. Ennes, Frank C. Vasconcellos,

Frank J. Jacintho.

There are photos and much more but I don't want to make this too long. I
will gladly post more if there's an interest. Whatever I can to help.

Regards,

Maria Elena in Wisconsin

There were a number of early ones in New Bedford and Fall River, but I do
not know if any of the records survived. Monte Pio may, since it was still
in existence as of a few years ago. I have one such collection in the
Ferreira-Mendes Portuguese American Archives - the Associacao Benificente
Alianca Portuguesa of Fall River, which may have had New Bedford residents
as members, but the dates are 1924-1999. Id be happy to look up any names
 that fall within that period.

Organizations that I know existed are:

Monte Pio Luso-americano (1882-Present), New Bedford

Associacao de S. Jose Benevolente Protectora e Caridade, Fall River
 (1888-1930s)

Real Associacao Autonomica Micalense de Massachusetts, New Bedford
 (1895-1936)

 Fraternidade Portuguesa, New Bedford (1897-?)

Socorro Mutuo das Damas Portuguezas (1898-?) women only

Our Lady of Lourdes Benevolent Association, Fall River (early
 1900s-past-1920s)

Portuguese Mutual Association of Our Lady of Light, Fall River,
 1909-present

St. Michael the Archangel Society, Fall River (early 1900s-post 1920s)

St. Catherine Benevolent Society, Fall River (1905-196?)

Portuguese Continental Union, various lodges, (1925-present)
