Hi Jeremy, Regarding Luciana's translation I would read it as "true replica of .": This email your reading is correct. Esmola translates into "Alms" or more current "donation". This photo belongs to Criacao Velha as translated in prior email by Cheri. It must have been issued to raise funds to build one of the lateral altars where the image of our Lady of Lourdes stands. The Patron Saint of Criacao Velha is N. Sra. das Dores as also mentioned by Cheri. Have a look. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Igreja_de_Nossa_Senhora_das_Dores,_altar_lateral_3_Cria%C3%A7%C3%A3o_velha,_concelho_da_Madalena,_ilha_do_Pico,_A%C3%A7ores,_Portugal.JPG On Fri, May 27, 2016 at 2:46 AM, 'j Bc' via Azores Genealogy < azores@googlegroups.com> wrote: > > Okay! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: N. S. De Lourdes Ilha do Pico
Hello! Thanks ever so much for the clarification. You wrote "It must have been issued to raise funds to build one of the lateral altars where the image of our Lady of Lourdes stands" - so I appreciate knowing what it was... I am attempting to date it, so do you think that the church might have record of when the altar was constructed? There is an image of it on the front to use in identification Does anyone happen to know who I might contact there? Thanks! Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: N. S. De Lourdes Ilha do Pico
Jeremy, You may be going off on a tangent here. If you really want to pursue your method, you need to date the card. It looks like you have scanned a cabinet card. I'm not sure. Here's information on cabinet cards: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabinet_card I have a book on photography for genealogy. It could be another type of card too (daguerreotype comes to mind, but I don't think so - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daguerreotype). It's best to start with your ancestor: name, date, and place. Create a timeline for your ancestor (censuses, emigration/immigration), birth, marriage(s), death. Use other records to try to narrow things down or to find the freguesia. I'm not so sure that a card that has popped up from ?? is going to hold the clue that you need. Maybe it will, but there's a chance it may not. I can meet you in the genealogy room of the civic center library and we can go over what you have. If you want to do that, we need to go off list and email each other privately. gfscherim at gmail.com.
