There are also other "neighborhoods". Some documents list my ancestors as living in the lugar de Outeirão. While looking for that I found a listing of what appears to be the streets or neighborhoods of present day Norte Grande. http://www.portugalio.com/velas/norte-grande-neves/ Unfortunately, if you click on it the link, for example, for Outeirão, it takes you to a nice map--of an area of mainland Portugal with the same name. :( Same with Ribeira d'Areia. BUT the link for Faja da Ribeira d'Areia shows it as being on Sao Jorge. Hope someone can have fun with this. I did! Mary PS Rose, I have Bettencourts from Norte Grande in my ancestry, too. -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Norte Grande - impressions
I usually find many records of children with unknown fathers and single mothers. Some of these women could be prostitutes, but I've never found this mentioned in the register. João, this is an interesting topic. Do you have a qualitative (or even quantitative) feel for how many illegitimate children were born in Norte Grande compared to the number of legitimates? I am asking, because I seem to run into a lot of supposedly single mothers in the lines I am studying (I have none in Norte Grande). It seems very common. Maybe it is just my family... ;> Duane -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Follow the confirmation directions when they arrive. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Norte Grande - impressions
Slaves came from Africa, particularly from the Portuguese colonies. There are more slaves in the bigger islands: Terceira and São Miguel and in the richer families. I don't think there were the sort of abbuse towards slaves that we see on movies. Many times, the godparents of slaves are people important in the village, also when they die there are ceremonies and masses for their soul.
