You can get a stand alone genealogy software program that you install on 
your own computer, or you can do one in the cloud, such has housing your 
tree on Ancestry.com or Geni.com or any thing similar.

I'm pretty sure Sousa (or the older spelling Souza) are one of the top 5 
Portuguese surnames. I'm pretty sure just about every island has Sousa 
families on it.

I don't know your definition of dramatic is, but most of us deal with the 
name changes.  They seem to change every couple of generations, but most 
names can be found back in the family tree somewhere.  I'm lucky that I'm 
the 10th generation to have the surname Mello.  When I go back to that 
ancestor, his name was Jacome.  His wife was a Mello. So my line gets it 
from her.

Without specifics on your immigrant ancestors (names, dates, places) it is
