Not really. I suggest Travalo is a misspelled Travassos, but If you know it 
to be correct, it could be nickname.

There's no Travalos in portuguese. My mother language is portuguese and I 
have never seen this word.

Hi and if I may ad regarding original spelling some priests used the soft
"C" or single "S" instead of the double SS.  Travacos, Travasos i/o
Travassos. We should take a look at the original.

I have Sebastiao Travalos married to Margarida de Sousa Azevedo (no
marriage found yet).  They had several children.  The first child I found
was Maria
b. 21 Sep 1688 in Rosto de Cao, Sao Roque.  Her marriage is the only record
where I found the Name AZEVEDO attached to Margarida.  They had a
son,Nicolau de Sousa ( my 5th g-grandfather).  Margarida also had a brother
named Nicolau de Sousa.  I have always thought that Margarida's father was
a Nicolau de Sousa. I found some info on RR that believe may be Sebastiao
and Margarida.

Sandra, I have a Nicolau de Sous married to Maria Carvalho in 1659 in 
Candelaria, Sao Miguel.
He is the son of Barnabé Travassos and Mecia de Sousa. (I think your Tavalos is 
really Travassos).  Barnabé is my 10th great grandfather.

Yes, the name is Travassos not Travalos (I don't think that's a name).

The double "s" has had its evolution over time (not only in Portuguese, but
in English as well).  Here is an example of the spelling of "Congress" from
the U.S. Constitution. Yes, they spelled it correctly - C-o-n-g-r-e-s-s.
That's how double "s" was made back in the day. http://goo.gl/6TXWHZ

(The study of handwriting is called paleography, for those wanting to look
it up).

O apelido *Travassos* era uma alternativa de *Travaços*. Admite-se que este
apelido tenha tido origem no vocábulo latino reconstruído **trabatiu*- com
origem no vocábulo *trabs*, que significa «trave ou tronco de árvore».

*Trabazos* é o nome de algumas localidades na Galiza. Em Fafe, Vila Verde,
existe a localidade de *Travaçós*.

O apelido Travaços/Travassos, que deve ter origem num {#topónimo|topônimo},
está {#registado|registrado} em Portugal desde o século XV.

The surname Travassos was an alternative of Travaços. It is accepted that
this nickname has originated in the Latin word rebuilt *trabatiu- with
origin in the word that means "hotstart lock or tree trunk".
Trabazos is the name of some localities in Galicia. In Fafe, Vila Verde,
there is the locality of Travaçós.
The surname Travaços/Travassos, who must have originated in a
{#NAME|topônimo}, is {#registered|registered} in Portugal since the 15th
century.

I don't know about "hotstart lock or tree trunk".  This translator comes up
with some strange things sometimes.  It calls  Rosto de Cao "Face of the
dog."  My husband call it "Roast the chicken" or something about rooster in
Spanish.

The "s" that looks like an "f" is called a "long s".  There's a good write 
up of it in Wikipedia:

Essentially (the long and short of it! ha!), the "s" we use today was 
mostly used at the ends of words, while the long s was used at the 
beginning and middle of words.  The long s went out of use in print in 
England around 1800, but it lasted into the 19th century in handwriting.

here's a late 18th c. British news cutting I was looking at this morning 
which shows several different placements of the long s:

(The long s is supposed to differ from an f by the lack of a crossbar, but 
I suspect the print setters sometimes cheated.)

Barnabé Travassos and Mécia de Sousa are my ancestors too. I descend from 
their daughter Isabel de Sousa who married Manuel Diniz in Candelária on 13

Hi Cathy,

Yes, it is.  I think in order for this to be understood one needs to know
the Portuguese rule of vowel applications  (a, e, i, o u) to the
consonants.

The rule was that when,  as in this case, an S is in between two vowels the
phonetics change in that the "S" sound is now pronounced as the "Z" sound,
TravaZos.  In order to correct this there was a period where the soft "ç"
was being used making it sound the right way i.e. (ss) until they settled
it with double SS; TravaSSos.  And, so it is to present day.

you go back to the time of the early settlers, it is easier to make connections.

I am a descendant of their daughter Margarida who married Antonio Gonçalves in 
Candelaria May 2, 1652.

As I went back in time I found that I have ancestors all over the island of 
São Miguel, in every freguesia.

I've looked the baptisms of Barnabé Travassos' children and with some 
informations about him in RR's book I think that probably he is son of 
Diogo Velho, from Relva,and Maria Dias.

It's not organizedy yet, but here's what I have about him:

"Barnabé Travassos":

Primeiro casamento. 
Casou pela segunda vez na Candelária em 27.9.1640 - CCA #52 com Maria Dias 
filha de Manuel Dias (f.) e de Luzia Gonçalves. O termo o menciona como 
viúvo e não diz o nome de seus pais. Foram testemunhas Francisco da Costa, 
Sebastião Velho Ferreira, Francisco Raposo e Pedro Velho.

Na Candelária em 7.9.1640 - CCA #53, há o casamento de Ana de Sousa, filha 
de Barnabé Travassos e Mécia de Sousa, com Antonio Dias filho de Manuel 
Dias (f.).

Na Candelária em 25.2.1659 - EC #35, há o casamento de Nicolau de Sousa, 
filho de Barnabé Travassos e Mécia de Sousa, com Maria Carvalho filha de
