[AZORES-Genealogy] Starting the search of my ancestors

2013-12-27 Thread jrolim75
Hello.

I am new to genealogy but I am ready to start the research that will lead me to
my lost family members.

I currently live in The United States but I am from a small town in Brazil,
called Viamao. Back in the days, that particular area in Brazil received a huge
number of people from Azores and I always heard as a kid that my family
originated there.

Unfortunately, I only have a few names and even fewer birth dates that will
make my research even more complicated. My mom was able to get some of the
records from a church in Osorio, Brazil but few people's records were found. We
actually suspect my family was Jewish but forced to become Christians back
then, several friends found their records in church and my family did not. I am
Jewish, by choice, and it would shock me if my research finds Jewish ancestry
at this point in my life.

Any help or tip from you all will be greatly appreciated, so far I have
requested a DNA kit and will start my genealogy tree soon.

Thanks,

Jeff Rolim

Hi Jeff R,

Genealogy is concerned with 3 things: A name, a date, and a place. Then we
concern ourselves with 3 main events: birth, marriage, and death (and to a
lesser extent, burial and divorce).

If you have a name with a date, then you only need the place in the
Azores. I'm from America, so I don't know what Brasilian resources are
available to help you from that end, but there are Brasilian researchers on
this list, as well as a few people who currently reside in Brasil. Perhaps
Brasil has some type of censuses or newspaper obituaries (not sure what
they are like in Brazil - they could just say that the person died. Many in
America give a mini-biography). Did someone from the Azores have to become
a citizen of Brasil? Hunt down that paperwork.

I have a how-to guide, but it's from the American perspective. However, it
might give you ideas:
http://goo.gl/X6p1db

I don't know which company you chose for your DNA testing. I run the
Azores DNA project on Family Tree DNA. We have 600+ Azorean researchers
there. FTDNA has the largest database so you are also compared with
everyone in FTDNA who took that type of test.

Hi Jeff,

I would also point out that the best test to take for finding family is the
Family Finder Test with Family Tree DNA. With this test you will find
matches back about 200 years and they may give you a better indication as to
what island and concelho (municipal Council) your family came from.
