Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Understanding Family Name Usage

Kim W,

It's the same name.

The name Antonio, when pronounced, can have that final "o" sound dropped,
so it will sound more like "Antone." The name Ignacio, when pronounced,
can also have that final "o" sound dropped, so it will sound more like
"Igg-nauce" (nauce rhymes with sauce). Somehow, that winds up as Enos. So
depending on where your ancestor lived, whom he was talking to, what his
accent was like, how familiar the other person was with the Portuguese
accent, and who was filling out the form, you'll get different spellings
for the same name. You get to look for ALL those names. Just think of it as
making you a better researcher.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Understanding Family Name Usage

2016-03-18 Thread Kim White
Hi Folks,
In the Will & Probate records of my 2x Great Grandfather his name is given
with 2 other known names. The names are listed as such: Antonio Ignacio
Pereira a.k.a. Antone Enos Pereira a.k.a. Ignacio Pereira. Are there
naming practices or usages that may help explain why a person would have
used 3 different iterations of a name? Understanding this a bit more may
help me when looking for other records. Thank you.
