[AZORES-Genealogy] military ranks

2013-04-25 Thread pico
Hi Eliseu,It could just be a typo, but I wanted to point out that Alferes is the rank just below Capitão.The only ranks above Capitão are Sargento-mor and Capitão-mor.It's always interesting to document people as they move up the ranks. They might not have any rank when married, but if their father held some rank, often they might soon be Sargento. Then maybe 5 years later they reach Alferes. Maybe soon after that, or many years later, they finally reach Capitão. And if their ancestors were some of the most important in that village, they might be able to reach Sargento-mor or Capitão-mor, or both in succession, if those posts become available upon the death of someone already holding that rank, since there is only one of each for each concelho.Atenciosamente,Doug da Rocha HolmesSacramento, CaliforniaPico Terceira Genealogist916-550-1618www.dholmes.com

Hi David,I have some Sousa Ataíde but I am not able to relate them to this one. This is the outline of the record:Captain Miguel de Sousa Ataíde died in the 2nd of March, 1764, N. Sra. da Luz. He was 86 going to 87. He was the widower of Dona (Lady) Maria de Melo. He left a will made by the official clerk (Escrivão) Alberto Correia Pestana where he stated the way he would be buried. His son the Alferes (Military rank above the Captain rank) Manuel de Sousa Ataíde was his official will executioner (we can assume that Manuel was the eldest male son in the island). Captain Miguel was buried in another grave because his own was occupied (may be with is wife…)Captain Miguel was born around 1678/1677. None of my Manuel de Sousa Ataíde (I have three with this same name) are his son… unless I have them with the wrong parents…I have a Miguel de Sousa Ataíde, born around 1695… but from a different father. Please let me know if you have any more info on this family.
