Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Would appreciate some help from the Pros on what to do when you see "de avos ocultos"

2016-09-25 Thread Cheri Mello
If you looked for a 10 year period and that's the only Alexandrina you've
found who is an exposto, it's her. Plenty of women use the name of the
church as their religious middle name.

Test all 4 grandchildren with Family Finder at FTDNA: https://goo.gl/X0gSGr

The test is $79 + $12.95 S If you can buy all 4 at once, great. If you
need to purchase one at a time, and not knowing how old or what the health
is of her 4 grandchildren, start with the one who is the least healthy.

2016-09-25 Thread George Sousa
Thank you Cheri. As I suspected the only way to proceed is to use DNA.
Alexandrina da Assunção has four grandchildren that are still with us (two
males and two females) and numerous Great Grandchildren and their
offspring. Who would you recommend be tested and what type of test would
you suggest?

As a bit of an aside, after posting this question I've continued looking
for any Alexandrina born in Santa Maria between 1860 and 1870 who was an
'exposta'. Alexandrina is not a very common name and I have found only
one... baptized on March 17th 1862 in Villa do Porto. The link to the
record is
http://culturacores.azores.gov.pt/biblioteca_digital/SMA-VP-ASSUNCAO-B-1860-1864/SMA-VP-ASSUNCAO-B-1860-1864_item1/P88.html.
In this record she is described as "uma crianca do sexo femenino a que dei
o nome de Alexandrina que foi exposta na Roda da Casa da Camara depois da
meia noite, filha de Pais nao sabidos".

Of course there is no way to know from this information that this is the
woman that I'm looking for but now I'm curious to know from others if you
have found orphans who were given a second name based on the name of the
church in which they were baptized. If this is a common practice then
Alexandrina da Assunção may have gotten her second name from "Nossa Senhora
da Assunção", the church in which she was baptized. Again, I know that none
of this proves that this is the lady that I'm looking for but I'm inclined
to think there is a high likelihood that this is her...

Thanks,

George

Alexandrina do Assuncao is the mom. Neither grandparents are known, so
Alexandrina herself was an exposto, foundling, orphaned.

There's no way to verify the family stories from this document. You may be
able to use DNA if you could obtain samples from all the descendants
mentioned in your stories.

The margin on page 2 says Raulino was married to Maria d'Andrade Melo and
he died in this freguesia on 1? May 1931? 1937?

I believe this is what the document states:

"No. 35 Raulino

>From my read of this it appears that Raulino's grandparents are not known.
His mother's name is given as Alexhandrina da Assunção. Is there a clue in
the name? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A couple of additional notes from family stories. Raulino's baptismal
godmother (Maria de Braga) is said to have been Alexandrina's aunt.
Raulino's father is said to have been named Raulino Jose de Sousa. The
family story is that Raulino's father was a cattle merchant from Sao Miguel.

Again any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Would like to contact with Celeste G. Perry

2014-02-20 Thread celeste perry
Sorry, Rick, I am not the Celeste (ccgran...@yahoo.com) being searched.  I have
not had my DNA tested so that is one thing and my middle name is Norine.  Perry
is my married name and is from my husband's father's line from Soldao, Lajes do
Pico.

The surname I used until I was adopted was Sobral; my maternal grandfather's
name (from Tras-os-Montes on the mainland).  After my mother's marriage and my
adoption I used the surname Lewis.

I never knew my biological father; however, I have traced his line back from
his place of birth in Matriz, Horta, Faial to the beginning of the records.
His name was Leonel Soares De Azevedo.

Although I never used his surname, on the 1940 census, my mother did list my
surname as De Azevedo.  (I found that information after she died and could not
ask any questions!).

Never had a middle name that began with a G.

Sorry, Rick, I am not the Celeste (ccgran...@yahoo.com) being searched. I
have not had my DNA tested so that is one thing and my middle name is
Norine. Perry is my married name and is from my husband's father's line
from Soldao, Lajes do Pico.

The surname I used until I was adopted was Sobral; my maternal grandfather's
name (from Tras-os-Montes on the mainland). After my mother's marriage and
my adoption I used the surname Lewis.

I never knew my biological father; however, I have traced his line back
from his place of birth in Matriz, Horta, Faial to the beginning of the
records. His name was Leonel Soares De Azevedo.

Although I never used his surname, on the 1940 census, my mother did list my
surname as De Azevedo. (I found that information after she died and could
not ask any questions!).

Never had a middle name that began with a G.

Michael,

I have a similar situation with my great grandfather. He came here supposedly
in 1898. The only vessel for that year is a schooner from his island Sao Jorge
to Provincetown, Ma. There are names that look like his brothers, but he is now
where on the list. They are all probably related somehow since it is a small
island. The lady in New Bedford, Ma helping me said that not all ships
manifests have been done. We could not find info on the schooner so seeing if
he was crew has not been found either. We checked other records that say he
came here in 1898 but they do not record the actual date or how. We checked the
whale men out of New Bedford he is not there so he did not work in that field.
The search continues. He is found in 1906 when he brought his new bride here.
They went to New Bedford. Trying to find out how long they stayed in New
Bedford and with whom and how they got to California.
He has a common name as well Jorge Faustino da Silva, 1880-1950 son of Joao
Faustino da Luz.
Keep searching it will be found.

according to the 1920 census my great great grandma immigrated in 1893 and the
1930 census says it was 1895. She would have been 25 or 27 upon arrival, in her
obituary she left a brother who was in California. My question is then, would
they have traveled here together? no matter how much I look I just can't find
her, or him for that matter with anything definitive.

The census have been known to make mistakes.  They have wrong information on my
grandmother.

[AZORES-Genealogy] Would Families Have Stayed in One Area?

2008-09-25 Thread Betty

Hi again,

Just curious if families on Sao Miguel have remained living in one part of
the island for a long time, or would they have had reasons to move to other
parts?

Betty(near Lowell, MA, USA)

P.S.I've been told by researchers that MOURA families were mostly on
Santa Maria. But, I mentioned that to my husband yesterday, and it
reminded him that his grandmother once mentioned .. Faial.

If Francisco MOURA was a whaler, as he was told, would the family have moved
around?
