Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Would appreciate some help from the Pros on what to do when you see "de avos ocultos"
If you looked for a 10 year period and that's the only Alexandrina you've found who is an exposto, it's her. Plenty of women use the name of the church as their religious middle name. Test all 4 grandchildren with Family Finder at FTDNA: https://goo.gl/X0gSGr The test is $79 + $12.95 S If you can buy all 4 at once, great. If you need to purchase one at a time, and not knowing how old or what the health is of her 4 grandchildren, start with the one who is the least healthy. Thank you Cheri. As I suspected the only way to proceed is to use DNA. Alexandrina da Assunção has four grandchildren that are still with us (two males and two females) and numerous Great Grandchildren and their offspring. Who would you recommend be tested and what type of test would you suggest? As a bit of an aside, after posting this question I've continued looking for any Alexandrina born in Santa Maria between 1860 and 1870 who was an 'exposta'. In this record she is described as "uma crianca do sexo femenino a que dei o nome de Alexandrina que foi exposta na Roda da Casa da Camara depois da meia noite, filha de Pais nao sabidos". Of course there is no way to know from this information that this is the woman that I'm looking for but now I'm curious to know from others if you have found orphans who were given a second name based on the name of the church in which they were baptized. If this is a common practice then Alexandrina da Assunção may have gotten her second name from "Nossa Senhora da Assunção", the church in which she was baptized. Again, I know that none of this proves that this is the lady that I'm looking for but I'm inclined to think there is a high likelihood that this is her... Alexandrina do Assuncao is the mom. Neither grandparents are known, so Alexandrina herself was an exposto, foundling, orphaned. There's no way to verify the family stories from this document. You may be able to use DNA if you could obtain samples from all the descendants mentioned in your stories. The margin on page 2 says Raulino was married to Maria d'Andrade Melo and he died in this freguesia on 1? May 1931? 1937? Mike, Cheri has a page with tons of help with reading the cca site. I cannot find the URL but someone on the list will give it to us. She did a series of lessons for us that made a huge difference in my ability to read the pages. I still need help but this list is very generous in lending a hand when you need it. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] would they?
Michael, I have a similar situation with my great grandfather. He came here supposedly in 1898. The only vessel for that year is a schooner from his island Sao Jorge to Provincetown, Ma. There are names that look like his brothers, but he is now where on the list. They are all probably related somehow since it is a small island. The lady in New Bedford, Ma helping me said that not all ships manifests have been done. We could not find info on the schooner so seeing if he was crew has not been found either. We checked other records that say he came here in 1898 but they do not record the actual date or how. We checked the whale men out of New Bedford he is not there so he did not work in that field. The search continues. He is found in 1906 when he brought his new bride here. They went to New Bedford. Trying to find out how long they stayed in New Bedford and with whom and how they got to California. He has a common name as well Jorge Faustino da Silva, 1880-1950 son of Joao Faustino da Luz. Keep searching it will be found. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] would they?
I have Cheri's info on how to read the records on the CCA site, I've just always been better with numbers than I am with words whether in another language or english. My question was would they have left Pico to come to the USA together? How likely is it that she would have come here by herself as a single woman even though she was 8 years older than her brother and he cam here married, Her name was Maria Leal dad Rosa b1868 d1932 my info has her arriving in Fairhaven, Mass. in 1893. His name was Antonio Leal Rosa b1875 d?, he married Maria Paulina b1879 d? all were from Piedade, Lajes do Pico, Pico. Did I read somewhere correctly that they would have needed passports to leave the Azores for the USA? what info do I need and is it the CCA site I will have to look? [AZORES-Genealogy] Would Families Have Stayed in One Area?
Hi again, Just curious if families on Sao Miguel have remained living in one part of the island for a long time, or would they have had reasons to move to other parts? Betty(near Lowell, MA, USA) P.S.I've been told by researchers that MOURA families were mostly on Santa Maria. But, I mentioned that to my husband yesterday, and it reminded him that his grandmother once mentioned .. Faial. If Francisco MOURA was a whaler, as he was told, would the family have moved around? --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] Follow the confirmation directions when they arrive.
