Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Vieira Anselmo, Ribeira Grande area, Sao Miguel island
Eric, I don't have the page in front of me, but Anselm is of German origin. It's meaning is "God's Helmet". When researching our roots, Anselmo is first listed in Belgium with Anthonis Anselmo in 1536. He had a daughter, I originally thought his line ended. But after doing much researching have learned how the last name is dropped and then reappears after a generation or two. In any event have not traced our Anselmo roots beyond Soa Miguel. But like Patsy, I too believe that there was an Italian that jumped ship and stayed on the island. Maybe one day we will find out. Ally You'll find this name all Catholic Europe. It's a saints name , of course Saint Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) was the outstanding Christian philosopher and theologian of the eleventh century. He is best known for the celebrated “ontological argument” for the existence of God in chapter two of the Proslogion, but his contributions to philosophical theology (and indeed to philosophy more generally) go well beyond the ontological argument. In what follows I examine Anselm's theistic proofs, his conception of the divine nature, and his account of human freedom, sin, and redemption. -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Vieira Anselmo, Ribeira Grande area, Sao Miguel island
Dolores, On the WWI draft records for the US I noticed most of the Almo's from the Azores seemed to be from Terceira rather than San Miguel. There seems to be some Scandinavians with the name also. I always wonder if the Anselmo came from an Italian since that is common in part of Italy. I just think if we live long enough more will be known.
