Thanks Pam. I suppose it's possible that he is one of my great grandfathers, Matheus da Costa, which is how the name appears on the marriage record of his son Joam da Costa. Was it common for a boy to take a surname given by his mother? Matheus' wife was Josefa Pacheco (in some records it's Pachequa or Pacheca). She was born in 1714. I'm trying to find their marriage record so that I can verify the names of Matheus' parents.
