RE: [AZORES-Genealogy] Help with the name of the groom's father.

2017-10-22 Thread Richard Francis Pimentel
I am seeing Ouincilas. I would say it is the way the priest wrote Wencelas
(the Ou making the W sound). The date of the record is 26 Dec which is the
feast of St Stephen also known as boxing day in England. It reminds me of the
carol “Good King Wencelas looked out on the feast of Stephen” but that was not
written until 1853.

I am going to have to find more documentation for this fellow. I wonder
what his nickname was! Thanks Cheri & JR.

2017-10-22 Thread Cheri Mello
Sandra P,

It's not a "Q." I see the word "Quaresma" 3 lines below. The handwritten
"Q" looks closer to a fancy "2." To me, it looks like an "O." BUT I can
distinctly make out the last 6 letters: ceslão. The only saint that comes
to mind is Wenceslas (as in the Christmas carol). However, they didn't use
"W" in the Portuguese alphabet. I don't know enough Portuguese to tell you
what they substituted for that sound, if indeed it is Wenceslas.

(Makes you wonder what ___ceslão's parents were thinkingGood morning
Father. We have another baby. It is another boy. We already used Manuel,
Francisco, José, João, and Antonio. We would like something a bit
different. Priest checks out the holy calendar and see's that it is
___ceslao's feast day. And there you have it! I'm completely making this
up, but it makes for a good story).
