Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Sebastiao Vieira-Help with Grandparents names
The women didn't have surnames during that time period. Do either of you have any idea why it is that the further back you go in the records it seems they don't list the maiden names of either the mother or grandmothers? I seem to be encountering this problem a lot. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Sebastiao Vieira-Help with Grandparents names
Adrian, There are 3 time periods of records. I'm doing this off the top of my head, so the dates are approximate. 1st period: 1600s-1700s: The women are listed with surnames 2nd period: 1800s: The women are listed with their middle religious names only 3rd period: The women have surnames. The records also vary in the information that they contain for the 3 time periods. I'll see if I can find the thread and send you a link. Thanks very much Cheri..I'll have a look. So much great info you have accumulated Cheri..really amazing! Last question for the night once you encounter a middle religious name instead of a maiden/surname is the search over in that person's tree? im not sure how you would trace that person back. Thnxs. Adrian, No, if you find a baptism that says the baby was born to Manuel Martins and Maria da Gloria, you go and find Manuel Maria's marriage. It will say Manuel was the son of A B and that Maria da Gloria was the daughter of X Y. It's a kind of weird thing that us Portuguese genealogists have to get used to - the time period of women with no last name.
