Jeez, you should see what some of the emails we get in Outlook 2000 look
like!
Still a very popular email client for some corporates.

Campaign Monitor (who we use to send mail out), have some great tips on how
to format/design emails:

Adam,

However many mail clients don't support the automatic (or even manual)
loading for CSS files. As you cannot know the client being used, you have
to go for the common set of features.

It's a common error to assume that everyone uses a particular client.

Actually, CSS stylesheets are fully supported by Outlook, Outlook Express,
and Thunderbird at least, and I am using CSS to generate size-efficient HTML
emails that use the stylesheets from the website (though obviously, the path
to the css file needs to be a full absolute URL) – do you still have an
email client that doesn't support CSS, if so, what is it?

Matt,

I sorted an automatic email notification system just recently on ukfree.tv
<http://ukfree.tv> and I think I might be able to give you a few pointers.
The site uses PHP, so my examples will be in that. If you can't follow it,
then let me know.

(You can subscribe/unsubscribe by visiting http://www.ukfree.tv/
<http://www.ukfree.tv/> and using the box in the 'my settings' item at the
top left.

To send an HTML email, as you have already found out I guess, you need to
ensure you have the right headers:

function sendHTMLemail($strEmail, $strHTML, $strSubject)
{

// To send HTML mail, the Content-type header must be set
$strHeaders  = 'MIME-Version: 1.0' . "\r\n";
$strHeaders .= 'Content-type: text/html; charset=iso-8859-1' . "\r\n";

// Additional headers
$strHeaders .= "To: $strEmail <$strEmail>\r\n";
$strHeaders .= "From: --- updates < [EMAIL PROTECTED] <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
>\r\n";

// Mail it
mail($strEmail, $strSubject, $strHTML, $strHeaders);

}

As you have found out, the level of CSS support in HTML email message is
limited. For example, you can't use the "class" operator to format items.
I have used this rather basic function to translate my "class" items to the
more basic "style" items:

function translaterhsbox($strTitle, $strContent, $strDummy1, $strDummy2)
{
return "$strTitle" .
strtr($strContent,array("class=\"lyrOffsite\""=>"style=\"font-size:
8pt;\"")) . "";
}

Basically you need to ensure that you format everything with styles, for
example:

But you can still use graphics from your web-site. However many email
programmes will block the graphics until you agree to download them.

http://www.ukfree.tv/2k8_graphic.php?a=a2
<http://www.ukfree.tv/2k8_graphic.php?a=a2&t=UK%20Free%20TV%20email%20update
%5C> &t=UK%20Free%20TV%20email%20update\">

If you have written your document in using CSS, someone can probably write a
bit of code to automatically "expand" the raw HTML to convert all the
'class'es to 'styles'.

You might like to know that the other constraints (java, scripting, flash)
are to protect email users from viral abuse, not a lack of will to implement
it.

Hope this helps

RE: [backstage] BBC Look East HTML rich newsletter

2008-06-05 Thread Gavin Pearce

The only problem with sending an entirely plain text email is when you get
into the world of stats.

Bounce rates can be tracked, and you can also do links unique for each user,
however stats like comparing click through rates compared to opening rates
and which parts of an email were click on most, wouldn't work with plain
text.

Not so important for smaller websites, but when you're emailing out to
10,000+ people, you want to make sure things are targeted properly, to be
able to re-invest and re-target, next time around.

If I may add my 2 cents, I think e-mail newsletters should always have
a text-only option with a link to the graphics-rich version. I am
subscribed to fairly vast number of newsletters and I generally don't
read them, I search them for keywords (filters or manually). Plain
text are ideal as a lowest common denominator for portable gadgets;
easy to forward plain text newsletters to my work or personal e-mail
accounts and read the graphics-rich versions on comfortable screens.
And, for the security-conscious (I am thinking of my aging personal
Windows box but also Google mail which scrubs images by default),
plain text offers a far more secure way to receive a flood of mail
with the rich version just an extra click away.

Sean.

A man walking down the street noticed a small boy trying to reach the
doorbell of a house. Even when he jumped up, he couldn't quite reach it

.The man decided to help the boy, walked up on to the porch and pushed the
doorbell.

He looked down at the boy, smiled and asked, "What now?"

The boy answered, "Now we run like crazy!"

It turns out it isn't the iPlayer but the "higher quality" DVB-T recording
that BT offer as part of their package. Although as they have no claim to
copyright over them, it a bit hard to understand how they can charge extra
for them, for example I couldn't record BBC one off-air, make a +1 of it and
then transmit it via satellite and charge a fee for it.

Could I?

So? They still aren't free.

They don't cost anything at all to the consumer. That's "free" is the
prtacicable sense. RealPlayer is, if you mean free-software, is much less
free.

Anyway, Flash is now "free" in the sense you mean, isn't it?

So? They still aren't free.

They don't cost anything at all to the consumer. That's "free" is the
prtacicable sense. RealPlayer is, if you mean free-software, is much less
free.

Anyway, Flash is now "free" in the sense you mean, isn't it?

It can be done in Windows, not by standard you have a point, but with other

RE: [backstage] How legal is ... uktv2c.com

2008-06-16 Thread Gavin Pearce
It just don't sound right when you read that website.
You know when the copy writing just makes a company sound really dodgy/sus
.

"Because of the one to one connection offered by the Sling Box this service
is not in any contradiction to any of the existing viewing laws in the UK.

You may have seen similar services advertised, we are aware just as you are
that they do not work, that is why our prices are more realistic as we have
to provide you with the very best technology to ensure the very best picture
quality."

Sounds like a little kids done the copy. And what sort of name is UK TV 2 C
anyway.

Any company that can't spell 'see' correctly, or uses a Z at the end of it's
name to try and sound cool, I steer well away from.

=)

Another wheeze, this time using the Slingbox software, to *charge* for the
BBC and other broadcasters online.

http://www.uktv2c.com/ <http://www.uktv2c.com/>

Seems to be a server centre with some slingboxes. £200 + £60pm to connect
it to a Freeview box, £460+ £60pm+package fees to connect it to a Sky box!

But cruder than zattoo, but my question is either or both legal?

Good day to you lovely people =),

Bit of topic I do apologise, but might be able to point me in the right
direction.

Conference calls, we all love to hate them.
We're a small business and sometimes find ourselves getting asked if we can
set-up a conference call.

We don't get asked often enough to warrant paying for a monthly
subscription, so has to be something on the fly.

conferencegenie.co.uk looks good, but you can't password protect a room,
which is a bit of an issue in my opinion.
If you picked the same room number as someone else, you would get very
confused!

Any suggestions or ideas?

Cheers,
- Gav

I'm not sure you'll find anything free - as I recall there were a several
incidents a few years ago where the data owners went after websites who were
putting tables and fixtures up without paying a licence fee.

But you never know.

Thank you very much Adam ! I will try to contact to FA or other premier
league Co. lets see if I can find a free source.

I have been looking for a source, where I can read All football clubs and
national teams and football score information via web services. However, I
could not find one yet. I can use Wiki to get football players details but
I need to a free source, where I can get football scores and league table
info. I cannot effort paying for this as the website is not commercial
website. it is just a football discussion sites, where all friends and
football fan can have their talks.

I doubt you have very little chance with the BBC as i think they republished
information maintained by a third party who have very strict distribution
rules.

Your probably better trying to talk to the FA. Alternativly there is the
following message at the bottom of the fixture list, however its probably
very expensive to purchase the rights.

ASP? I would rather eat my own excrement.

If you have a "search engine" I am sure you can afford to have a Windows
server in there somewhere with, say, VB.NET <http://VB.NET> and an IE
control. It's about twenty lines of VB to get a URL from a queue, send it
to the IE control, wait for it to complete the loading, grab the control's
image and JPEG it.

I'm sure it would be far too slow to do it in real time. Not quite so sure
how you would then identify where the words are on the page though.

Keep it all server-side is what I say J.

Won't affect the SEO, and won't limit users without JS.

However the OnClick would almost achieve the same I guess ...

Exactly Brian, I think we are on the same page ... my point is why does
the BBC need to make use of JavaScript, or NoFollow tags for links to
"key" sites related to the story in hand?

I can see a good point about using a redirector as you can use it

a) test to see if the link is broken; and

b) count the number of times it get used.

I keep thinking of using a bit of "onclick=..." with an AJAX routine to
do the testing and counting. It is a simple matter of returning a true
value to allow the link to activate. I guess if it broken you could
return false...

End-user generated content is a different matter ...

I can understand on "user" generated content, but when
it's a link to a
relevant and respected website on the topic in hand,
than that isn't a
good or valid reason to use the "nofollow" syntax. In
fact as stated
already, that's a large part in how the big search
engines work.

Google isn't likely to start penalising the BBC site as
it's no doubt on
a "respected site" / "white list" somewhere else within
the Google
system...

But that isn't, to be fair, the issue. The issue is that even
if the BBC decides to link to an external site, if it uses either the
methods described, a visiting user will get there, but a search engine
will dismiss it.

Incoming links are useful for SEO and to have them turned off
from the BBC is a big problem. Last time I had a link from a major BBC
page to my site, my usual traffic (and ad revenue) tripled for three
days. But the link did not boost any search engine ratings.

Tacking this off the list as way off topic. ; - )
