RE: [backstage] WARN: backstage developer only list going down this weekend

2009-07-15 Thread Paul Daniel
How come when you make these announcements about closing the developer list
something contrary happens?
The last time it was a flurry of activity on the developer list.
This time it's a flurry of activity on the main list.
Most odd.

This is the last call guys, the developer only list is going away at the end
of the week.

Hi Everyone,

The developer only list (backstage-developer) was setup when there was
massive amounts of traffic on the main list, however in recent months the
traffic on the list has dropped and we are only seeing one or two posts on
the developer only list.

So we're looking to shutdown the developer only list and bring some unity
and balance back to the main list.

I understand this won't be supported by many of you, but we did give you the
chance to feedback. So by the end of the week, we will shutdown the list and
anyone attached to that list will be automatically unsubscribed.

Big thanks to everyone who subscribed to the developer only list, I really
hope you do re-subscribe to the main mailing list, which is much quieter
now.

It was considered to automatically move people across to the main list but
it didn't seem fair. So if your interested in joining the main list again,
just ping Major-domo a email on backstage@lists.bbc.co.uk with the subject
subscribe.

Cheers,

Ian Forrester

Sorry for coming rather late on this thread.

You could try using Yahoo! Pipes - http://pipes.yahoo.com.
A pipe can accept XML data using the Fetch Data module, and there is an option

Making slow progress. :)

Spent some time writing a caching routine in PHP for the feeds. We
know the feeds get updated at 8am and 8pm, right?

Any comments? Didn't quite know how to store the expiration of a file cleverly.

This is hosted temporarily on my employer's server. I'll probably move

Also made a mobile friendly template. I.e. it looks fine on my Android G1.

Subject: [backstage-developer] RSS Sliders

We've been developing a prototype interface element for the BBC which we'd
like to release to the Backstage developer community for feedback and
improvements.

HYPERLINK
http://projects.hinterland.nu/bbc/slidershttp://projects.hinterland.nu/bbc
/sliders

It's a simple slider widget which allows for four RSS feeds to be mixed down
into a single list. Two sliders are used, the first to mix two pairs of
feeds into two lists, and the second to mix the two lists together.

..

The focus is on the BBC website's 'Where I Live' section, and the aim is to
allow users to easily choose a balance of News and Local Features, as well
as balancing the mix between two counties.

Stories are given a value based on their order within the feed, and as the
slider moves across, low value stories from one list drop off, to be
replaced by high value stories from the new list.

Questions include: Is this intuitive? Does the data shift as you might
expect? Are two sliders too complex? Is a slider appropriate here, or should
something else be used? Is the sorting algorithm right? What should we do
about duplicate entries?

..

The application is in two parts, a Perl script which consumes RSS feeds
(using XML::FeedPP) and generates an embedded JSON array containing the
stories from all four sources and their rank.

Secondly there is a Javascript function to combine and generate the list(s)
visible on the page. Since the time course of 'News' and 'Local Features'
differ so widely [news changing by the minute, features dating back weeks]
it was not possible to elegantly rank the lists strictly on their
publication date - instead we chose to simply score them according to their
rank position in the original feed.

In this prototype the source feeds are hard-coded into the script - however
this could easily be changed to use an external list. Unfortunately the BBC
does not have a very RESTful interface to their local features XML, with no
consistency in the URL format there is no simple programatic way to access
all the BBC regions.

[backstage] BBC Video RSS feeds guid

2007-09-14 Thread Paul Daniel
It looks like the RSS video feeds generate a guid for an item based on the
link for the item. Unfortunately the parameters in the link can change
places over time resulting in one item that has different links and guids.
For example:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/mediaselector/check/player/nol/newsid_699/
newsid_6994300?redirect=6994310.stmnews=1bbram=1nbram=1nbwm=1bbwm=1asb
=1
and
http://www.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/mediaselector/check/player/nol/newsid_699/
newsid_6994300?redirect=6994310.stmnews=1bbwm=1nbram=1bbram=1nbwm=1asb
=1

This can cause feed readers to duplicate the item.
Please would someone pass this on to the relevant people..
My apologies if this has already been discussed.

The explanation on the symbols page is poor, but the actual text in
the feed is pretty consistant. I've only needed to match ten phrases
to smbols since I wrote my weather map on the 1st of June.
(Admittedly, most of those are variants on pi**ing down... but I
digress.) So, I match the phrases to these icons like so...

sunny intervals  = icons/3_sunny_int.png;
heavy showers  = icons/14_heavy_rain.png;
light rain   = icons/10_light_rain.png;
sunny  = icons/1_sunny_day.png;
cloudy  = icons/8_black_lev_cloud.png;
light showers = icons/10_light_rain.png;
heavy rain  = icons/13_heavy_rain_showers.png;
thunderstorm  = icons/29_thundery_shower.png;
thundery showers  = icons/29_thundery_shower.png;
drizzle  = icons/9_light_rain_driz.png;

And yes - I'm well aware that the BBC only seems to recognise one kind
of thunder when it comes to icons, but see fit to differentiate
between thunderstorms and thundery showers in text.

I was worried when I started the project that I'd need to pick up
sunny intervals, sunny spells, sunny periods, sunny breaks etc. It
seems not.

Map at: www.sdldev.co.uk/weather/map.asp

Cheers,

Rich.

 Who at the BBC publishes the weather feeds?

 why is it that the text description and images are not consistent?
 in other words, why is the explanation of the symbols not used
 consistently?

 London today forecast text is cloudy as it was in yesterday's
 forecast for today.

 whereas the graphic yesterday was partly cloudy
 today it is black low level cloud

 because the text and graphic are not related consistently as per the
 explanation of symbols it seems virtually impossible to use the feed
 accurately.
