Re: [backstage] BBC iPlayer, loved by millions, disliked by a single US citizen

2008-04-30 Thread Thom Shannon
He does have a point though that the BBC is anti competitive. I
personally think the bbc is great for consumers, and that the quality of
bbc news is the only thing stopping uk tv news turning into something
like american news, but any of that could change, since the bbc isn't
controlled by market forces.

Good news: some OpenSocial folks are headed to London, so anyone and everyone
is welcome to come learn about OpenSocial and get your hands into some code.

On Sunday, the 6th of April, we'd like to invite all of you in London (or
nearby) to come hack on OpenSocial. In addition to copious wifi, we'll walk
through the state of OpenSocial and walk through the API, so you can get off
and running building applications.

Re: [backstage] What would you love to see coming out of BBC Vision in the near future?

2008-03-03 Thread Thom Shannon
can you get hold of subtitle data from broadcasts? That would be
amazing! So many possibilities.

Someone I know who's been working on video tagging software was telling
me that broadcasters (like the beeb) use a similar system, and sometimes
broadcast some of the meta data. Apparently they use it for tagging
events in sports matches and use that for pulling together highlights
quickly. I'm sure production staff at the bbc are adding all kinds of
meta richness to their video content, it would be great to be able to
open some of that up.

Hi All,

I was hoping to get a brainstorm of ideas for APIs and Feeds you would love to
play with in the near future, while focusing on Vision/TV

I got most of the obvious stuff like,

- A 31 day schedule in XML
- TV schedules as a API with past and future ability
- Direct links to iplayer programmes
- XML/RSS/ATOM/JSON of upcoming iplayer programmes
- XML/RSS/ATOM/JSON of programmes about to drop off iplayer
- Links between programmes and their programme catalogue entry
- The Programme Catalogue! :)
- A reference page or service for all programmes (/programmes in XML)
- XMPP pub/sub messages for upcoming programmes
- keywords

Anything more?

Re: [backstage] Adobe fuses on and offline worlds

2008-02-25 Thread Thom Shannon
It's been around for quite a while now. It's good in that it's fairly
easy to port existing stuff too, it runs a webkit browser with a few
extensions for access to local files data storage and extra ui control.
You can host a pure js/html app, use frames to load webpages or just
standard ajax. It's good for bridging the gap between your web app and
the desktop, the most common use for it seems to be making twitter clients!

The biggest downside is the memory footprint, its huge! Makes it quite
unusable for things like twitter clients. It's also potentially a lot of
work to make things function fully offline (like gears) but then it can
be a lot of work to get gears working.

Idea: an abstraction library for using google gears, local storage via
air or flash and any other method that comes along!

Adobe Air allows developers to build tools that still have some functionality
even when a computer is no longer connected to the net.
A free download will allow users of Macs, PCs and, later this year, Linux machines to run any Air applications.

The BBC is also building prototype applications with AIR.
The nice thing about it is that it works on all the different platforms - Mac, PC and eventually Linux, said John O'Donovan, chief architect in the BBC's Future Media and Technology Journalism division.

So what do people think?

So I'm hoping the wealth of the backstage network will put us in touch. Then
again, I could just email him or leave a few entries on his blog.

Cheers,

Re: [backstage] Google Announces the OpenSocial API

2007-10-31 Thread Thom Shannon

that's pretty cool, I heard about this a while ago.

Totally understandable that facebook and myspace wouldn't be on there,
but it'll make it so much easier to get your app out to more people. Now
you only need to write it to work on 3 platforms to reach a massive
audience.

Ian Forrester wrote:

http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2007/10/google-opensocial-api-launch.html

Google has announced OpenSocial, a new open API for social networks. The new
standard will allow developers to create Facebook-like apps on any social
network site that implements it with the same calls.
---
This is huge because finally we're starting to see a common standard being
build into different social networks. There are some caveats however like no
support for Facebook or Myspace.
