Re: [BackupPC-users] Need help with automating Windows client deployments & handling the file lock backup problem with open files

2010-12-20 Thread Jeffrey J. Kosowsky
The program I wrote, 'shadowmountrsync' is I believe on the Wikki and
is pretty extensively self-documented. That might be the one you are
referring to on the Wikki...
In particular, the required files are all documented. The setup is all
pretty automated since it pretty much figures things out.
Also, I hope to release an updated version in a few days that is
slightly more robust and automated.

Also, note that my version has the option to dump the ACL's which can
be helpful for restoring since the current version of BackupPC ignores
the ACL's...

That's strange. Were you using an old version? It should have given
you at least ext3 if not ext4 options. Either way you're not required
to use gparted for partitioning AND formatting. You can partition with
gparted and then format it however you want.

ext2 is not journaled so I would at least use ext3. At this point ext4
is pretty stable. I use it on my BackupPC server (really all of my
computers including a MythTV box). Of course I just use BackupPC in a
home environment to backup home directories, pictures, and music.

[BackupPC-users] ext2 vs. ext3

2010-12-20 Thread Chris Baker
I installed a new enclosure on our BackupPC server. It has 4 TB of space. I
noticed that fdisk would not work with anything over 2048 GB. I thus ended
using GNU Parted for my partitioning. I noticed that it would only let me
use ext2.

Does it make a difference if I use ext2 or ext3? If so, how do I partition
my drive in ext3?

Hi Jeffrey,
I would believe that the line number reference to the following "else"
statement.
Did you try to debug it and set a breakpoint to 1160 and 1162?

My condolence, it seems to be a hard to evaluating error/feature.

Confusing, eh? I'll try to clarify:

To set up a client, just copy the c:\backuppc directory. Aside from
vshadow, nothing's specific to a Windows version or bit width. Depending
on your situation (multiple drives?) you may need to make some alterations
to the scripts.

On the server, you'll need the pre and post commands, and a copy of
winexe, which turns on and off VSS, plus whatever you'd usually do to set
up a client. This can be automated, but naturally it depends how
homogenous your clients are.

Re: [BackupPC-users] Need help with automating Windows client deployments & handling the file lock backup problem with open files

2010-12-20 Thread hansbkk
Nothing will properly handle backing up files currently being written
to during the backup session without inserting itself somewhere
between the OS and the disk/controller hardware.

COTS "hot imaging" programs (Symantec's (recent versions of) Ghost and
BackupExec System Recovery are examples) do this pretty reliably now,
but they create large monolithic disk image files that don't take
advantage of BackupPC's magical file deduping.

I handle this by making sure that always-on apps like Outlook (and in
your case SQL servers) store their files to the OS/apps partition -
and these get backed up separately from the regular data files, via CD
or PXE boot allowing a proper "cold" imaging backup. With decent
network bandwidth and good automation, most clients can get backed up
in a 20-30 minute session - I do this weekly, and each user knows
which day of the week they're supposed to do it - most set the session
running and get their coffee first thing in the morning.

An alternative would be having such apps storing their data on
filesystems with snapshot capabilities, e.g. LVM on a Linux server.

I realize that none of these approaches are easy or inexpensive, but
AFAIK that's the nature of the beast.

Whatever path you take, make sure to test it thoroughly with realistic
scenarios.

[BackupPC-users] Basic usage questions (noob)

2010-12-20 Thread hansbkk
I have a large but still limited amount of total storage space
available, and am trying to figure out how to optimise dividing it up
between the "primary" NAS and the "BUNAS" that will hosting BackupPC's
volumes.

The least critical are of course media files, and in fact they don't
even really need to be stored on hard disk space, as I've been
archiving to DVD as I've been collecting/converting. They
**certainly** don't need to take up my valuable NAS space more than
once - in other words, if I do choose to store the more valuable files
there, they should not be backed up any further.

So here's my question - is it possible to set up a separate directory
"media tree" within the BackupPC pool's filesystem that is explicitly
intended to be exposed to "regular users" as a network share (could be
via samba, nfs or even offered up by a "check-in/out" web front end)?

The goal is to ensure that to the extent users have copies of these
files on their local filesystems, they aren't going to slow down the
backup sessions, as they'll already exist in the pool. If this isn't a
good idea, perhaps having such a folder tree "off to the side" from
BackupPC's pool but still in the same filesystem would work in
conjunction with periodically running one of the "dedupe/hardlinking"
scripts - any particular one recommended to use with BackupPC's pool?

--

I'm going to set up and train users to use a top-level "don't back up
this tree" folder on their local filesystems, where they should be
placing unimportant but humungous files like these. However as we all
know, users will follow such a scheme inconsistently at best.

Which brings my next question - can anyone suggest a way to alert the
sysadmin (me) that a user did (mistakenly) have one of these ginormous
files in the filesystem being backed up? I'm guessing some sort of
cron-triggered script looking for new hardlinks to existing files
within my "media tree", ideally indicating the user and the file's
location in their filesystem.

Pointers to implementation examples of anything similar to this would
be great, or otherwise perhaps some hints to get me started?

Thanks in advance. . .

PS I never got a direct answer to my question about backing
up/transferring BackupPC's filesystem (but thanks to Pavel about
mentioning his RAID method)

=
If no one's worked with FSArchiver, then how about feedback on what
y'all would choose between my current top two choices?

A - rsync the pool over + BackupPC_tarPCCopy the hardlinks dirstruc to
a temp location and then unpack it. I need to work on my scripting
skills anyway 8-(

B - full partition clone via something like dc3dd or Acronis True Image

Feature request: just MHO, but there really should be an option (both
Web and CLI) to just copy the whole cahuna over, as long as there's an
appropriate target device mounted. I can't imagine too many people are
dumping this stuff to tape??

This does not do open files. Unfortunately...

How would you restore an "image" of the PC exactly at backup time? It
seems like you'd need to install, restore, reboot, fix all errors, etc..

I mean, rsync would have to work SOMEHOW... :)

Heck, I exclude tons of file types (.exe .com .dll .ocx ... on and on)

On 12/20/2010 1:59 PM, Ryan Blake wrote:

Maybe I'm mistaken, though. Will this option backup open files as

options do I have to do this? It seemed so much easier working with
rsyncd on *nix...

Personally, I use a batch file to install the client. You have to
configure the rsyncd.conf and rsyncd.secrets

Using this download:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/backuppc/files/cygwin-rsyncd/2.6.8_0/
and these instructions:
http://gerwick.ucsd.edu/backuppc_manual/backuppc_winxp.html

@echo off
c:
md c:\rsyncd
net use x: \\server\utils
xcopy x:\rsyncd\*.* c:\rsyncd\*.* /Y
c:
cd \rsyncd
cygrunsrv.exe -I rsyncd -e CYGWIN=nontsec -p c:/rsyncd/rsync.exe -a
"--config=c:/rsyncd/rsyncd.conf --daemon --no-detach"

cygrunsrv.exe --start rsyncd

rem Les Stott notes you can setup the WinXP firewall to allow
rem port 873 TCP connections to rsync with the following script
rem lines. Remove the rem lines to run these three commands.
rem
rem netsh firewall set allowedprogram program = c:\rsyncd\rsync.exe
name = rsync mode = enable scope = CUSTOM addresses = LocalSubnet
rem netsh firewall set portopening protocol = TCP port = 873 name =
rsyncd mode= enable scope = CUSTOM addresses = LocalSubnet

rem netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8 enable

Ultimately, I am trying to automate the update process to end-users
as much as possible (which is why I used smb to start with). I'm
looking for something I can remotely install and have backup all
directories, including those currently locked and also including live
Microsoft SQL databases without the bandwidth cost of SMB and while
backing up open files (I essentially want a backup good enough that I
can use to restore the entire "system state," which includes active
system files). I know from my previous experience, I was able to
successfully backup a MySQL database on Linux and restore it when the
entire database was "accidentally" deleted. I just am not too
confident with Windows and how to do this properly while the DB is
still running.

Re: [BackupPC-users] Need help with automating Windows client deployments & handling the file lock backup problem with open files

2010-12-20 Thread Ryan Blake
That sounds simple enough and something I found initially when doing my
research. However, I do not believe this also can handle open files, such as
Outlook's .pst files or other documents open by the user, such as system files.
I want to be able to back up all of these files without the end-user having to
actually do anything on their part and being able to remotely install the
software. End result: I want to be able to restore the entire OS just as it
was the moment it was backed up.

Maybe I'm mistaken, though. Will this option backup open files as well
(including the ubiquitous Outlook data files)? If not, what options do I have
to do this? It seemed so much easier working with rsyncd on *nix...

Personally, I use a batch file to install the client. You have to configure
the rsyncd.conf and rsyncd.secrets

Using this download:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/backuppc/files/cygwin-rsyncd/2.6.8_0/
and these instructions:
http://gerwick.ucsd.edu/backuppc_manual/backuppc_winxp.html

@echo off
c:
md c:\rsyncd
net use x: \\server\utils
xcopy x:\rsyncd\*.* c:\rsyncd\*.* /Y
c:
cd \rsyncd
cygrunsrv.exe -I rsyncd -e CYGWIN=nontsec -p c:/rsyncd/rsync.exe -a
"--config=c:/rsyncd/rsyncd.conf --daemon --no-detach"
cygrunsrv.exe --start rsyncd

rem Les Stott notes you can setup the WinXP firewall to allow
rem port 873 TCP connections to rsync with the following script
rem lines. Remove the rem lines to run these three commands.
rem
rem netsh firewall set allowedprogram program = c:\rsyncd\rsync.exe name =
rsync mode = enable scope = CUSTOM addresses = LocalSubnet
rem netsh firewall set portopening protocol = TCP port = 873 name = rsyncd
mode= enable scope = CUSTOM addresses = LocalSubnet
rem netsh firewall set icmpsetting 8 enable

Ultimately, I am trying to automate the update process to end-users as much
as possible (which is why I used smb to start with). I'm looking for something
I can remotely install and have backup all directories, including those
currently locked and also including live Microsoft SQL databases without the
bandwidth cost of SMB and while backing up open files (I essentially want a
backup good enough that I can use to restore the entire "system state," which
includes active system files). I know from my previous experience, I was able
to successfully backup a MySQL database on Linux and restore it when the entire
database was "accidentally" deleted. I just am not too confident with Windows
and how to do this properly while the DB is still running.

How does this get the files into the

   BACKUPC_ROOT/pc/hostname/backup_number

tree? It will get them into the pool, but that won't make the files
show up under the pc directory for the host in the correct share
location. Which AFAIK is the only location that rsync mode will use as
a base backup to prevent file transfer.

Your method is valuable to pre-populate the pool so that the space
used on disk won't grow, but that is a different issue from that of
the OP's.

Sadly I don't know of a good answer to get files from newhost imported
into the system. One possibility is to:

mount the usb drive on your backup server in the same location
that the files would be mounted on newhost

set up an entry for newhost in BackupPC (probably using a newhost.pl
file for settings) to back up the usb drive
setting $Conf{ClientNameAlias} = 'backupPChost';

This should allow you to start a backup of newhost in backuppc that
will not contact newhost, but will instead connect to the backupPC
host and backup just the usb drive's contents as backup 0.

Then edit the newhost entry and remove the $Conf{ClientNameAlias}
entry and add any other shares that you want backed up.

At this point starting another full backup of newhost should use your
0th backup as a template to back up the real newhost.

I have often wished for a

  BackupPC_importTar -H hostname -d dump_number -s share \
  -r pathremove -p pathAdd

that could be used like:

  tar -cf /path/to/usb/. | BackupPC_importTar -H newhost -d 0 -s /disk1 \
  -r /path/to/usb

to build a proper tree under pc/newhost/0/f%2fdisk1. Maybe someday.

Getting them in the pool isn't enough - you have to make them appear in the
same
location in the same host in a full backup run so they are used as the
comparison base for the next rsync. You can do that by mounting the usb into
the same location as the files should be on some other, more local host which
may or may not be the server itself, then using the ClientAlias setting to
temporarily point the backup for the real target host to the substitute holding
the files. If you do it some other way you could probably still make it work
by mv'ing the pc tree where the files land into the location where they should
be.

Yes: copy it to your backup server host, and then tell BackupPC to
backup those files *on the server host*. This will put them in the
pool, which means they won't be retransferred. After a couple of
backups on the client are done, delete them on the server.

[BackupPC-users] Need help with automating Windows client deployments & handling the file lock backup problem with open files

2010-12-20 Thread Ryan Blake
Hello All:

I have been using BackupPC for some time successfully with other Linux clients
and have just recently began working with dreaded Windows machines. As stated
in the documentation, being able to backup locked (and open) files really
hampers the whole backup process, especially for some users who simply won't
listen to shutting down Outlook and closing out programs. I currently am using
the SMB method to backup several computers in a test environment.

However, after reading through the archives on this listserv and scouring the
internet, I see that the rsyncd client for Windows seems to be the best
alternative except that there is still the problem with locked and open files.
But, after reading more through these archives, I see that there may be a way
to use shadow file copy with this client to backup open and locked files as
well.

I came across this website: http://www.goodjobsucking.com/?p=62 and it seems to
be rather promising but is rather confusing as-is. I also found
http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/backuppc/index.php?title=User_Scripts_-_Client_-_Windows_VSS
but I'm not sure if that solution is any better than the first.

Ultimately, I am trying to automate the update process to end-users as much as
possible (which is why I used smb to start with). I'm looking for something I
can remotely install and have backup all directories, including those currently
locked and also including live Microsoft SQL databases without the bandwidth
cost of SMB and while backing up open files (I essentially want a backup good
enough that I can use to restore the entire "system state," which includes
active system files). I know from my previous experience, I was able to
successfully backup a MySQL database on Linux and restore it when the entire
database was "accidentally" deleted. I just am not too confident with Windows
and how to do this properly while the DB is still running.

So, my question is: Is there a better solution to these problem that I have not
found yet or are one of the solutions above my best bet? If so, does anyone
have better documentation or something easier to start from (such as a .tar or
.zip with everything "configured")?

Any assistance/guidance/help would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully this will also help some other people, too.

Re: [BackupPC-users] Only v0 showing in backup history

2010-12-20 Thread Daniel Harvey
Hi Craig,

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, some files have changed.

I know, as I have performed specific tests on a file I know changes daily. In
summary, I know that:
1. That the file is updated daily.
2. That the file is backed up correctly (daily).
3. That the different versions of the file can be restored correctly from the
web interface.
4. That the different versions of the file can be restored correctly from the
command line.

Any other suggestions on what to look at? No errors show in any of the logs.

Thanks in advance,
Daniel.

That probably means the files haven't changed. That number isn't
the backup number. Instead, it is just a number that identifies
the different versions of the file. A file that hasn't changed
through several backups will be displayed as "v0".
