Re: [BackupPC-users] high load and stuck processes
Hi Les, Thanks for the reply. As i mentioned in my mail, the server has 8gb ram. It has a adaptec 3405 8 port raid card with sata drives ( 8 x 750gb - raid 5). Right now the maxbackups is set to 8 (i did this thinking the server was powerful enough to handle that many number of clients at one shot). Another reason being, there are like 100+ clients in the network, so if the number of too low, then all clients might not get backed up. Will try the setting and see if anything changes. -- Thanks and Regards, Anand Gupta On Fri, Mar 5, 2010 at 4:17 AM, Les Mikesell wrote: > On 3/4/2010 4:28 PM, Anand Gupta wrote: > > Hi, > > > > I have backuppc running for a client, and been facing constant problem > > lately on it. > > > > The server running the backuppc would go under high load (19 - 25 load > > on a quad core xeon, 8gb ram) and i can see multiple > > /usr/local/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC_dump processes. [BackupPC-users] high load and stuck processes
Hi, I have backuppc running for a client, and been facing constant problem lately on it. The server running the backuppc would go under high load (19 - 25 load on a quad core xeon, 8gb ram) and i can see multiple /usr/local/BackupPC/bin/BackupPC_dump processes. When i try to kill the processes, it doesn't work. Trying to reboot via Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work, the only thing which works is hard reboot. In the above setup, i am using backuppc with DeltaCopy. I am assuming that if the clients shutdown in between of a backup, backuppc would automatically after a while disconnect those sessions. Please correct me if i am wrong. Whenever there are a few clients being backed up, i see a lot of cpu load (it cud probably be due to disk io as well) Is there anyone else facing similar issues ? Working perfectly :) Thanks. I am gonna run some tests with multiple shares and see how it goes. It also cleanly unwinds all the above when you are done rsyncing your files. As a result, you should now be able to back up any (and all) files that are locked under Windows such as registry files (e.g. ntuser.dat) and databases (e.g. Outlook). The latest version of the script also optionally dumps gzipped versions of the ACLs (either in 'getfacl' and/or 'subinacl' format) for each drive for automatic inclusion in each share backup. The latest version also includes a number of minor bug fixes and extensions. The Change Log is as follows: 0.4.0 Updated for new Cygwin which doesn't like Win32 paths 0.4.1 Allow arbitrary cygdrive path prefixes ${CYGDRIVEPREFIX} 0.4.5 Add option to backup ACL's on each volume pre shadow/rsync launch Changed '--strict' option to '--expire' -- see details Bug fixes, code cleanup, additional logging instrumentation 0.4.5.1 Added ability to backup ACLs using 'subinacl' in addition to 'getfacl' If you have trouble downloading or using these scripts or if you find bugs or have enhancement requests, please post to the BackupPC mailing list and I will try to help. If it's smb, I believe having read that you need '\' as path separator if you want globbing to work, eg. '/RECYCLER/', # should be ok, no wildcards '\RECYCLER\', # the same as above '/*/Cache', # won't work, but ... '\*\Cache', # should work As I can't test that (I don't backup Windoze systems), I'd be interested in someone confirming that (maybe you if it works ;-). My apologies for not mentioning the transfer method. I am using rsyncd (cygwin). Basically the single share /cygwin, under which all partitions on windows appear, is being backed up. Any ideas what i am doing wrong here causing backuppc to still backup those directories ? How do i remove them from the pool ? Since you're only keeping backups for a week, I'd suggest not worrying about it (if space permits). Your list is quite long, so it seems quite a chore to get rid of all those and still have backups you trust. If you really want to do it, Jeffrey wrote a script which you can find somewhere in the archives. If you want a *simple approximation* that is "good enough" though not 100% correct, try something like find pc/ -mindepth 4 -maxdepth 4 \( -name fpagefile.sys -o -name fhiberfil.sys \) -exec rm {} \; (assuming those are always in the root of a share). On the other hand, these excludes didn't include a wildcard, so I would expect them to have been respected (were they?). If you're going to remove many small files that way (which I wouldn't do), you'd want to think of either replacing the -exec with a -print0 and pipe the output to 'xargs -0 rm' or replacing the 'find' with 'find2perl' and piping the output into 'perl'. Also remember that no space will be actually freed until BackupPC_nightly runs (and don't run it by hand, use 'BackupPC_serverMesg BackupPC_nightly run' if you really want to force an unscheduled run). I wanted to remove them, but on second thoughts let them be there for now. Just want to figure out why they were backed up in the first place (as i have those excludes from day 1) Appreciate the reply and help. -- Thanks and Regards, Anand Gupta -- Come build with us! If this is done at the same time as your backups it will drastically slow down the backups. Setting the blacout schedule will stop any backups starting at 20 or 19. I have excluded the following directories in backup $Conf{BackupFilesExclude} = { '*' => [ 'WUTemp', 'UsrClass.dat', 'NTUSER.DAT', 'parent.lock', 'Thumbs.db', 'ntuser.dat.LOG', 'IconCache.db', 'pagefile.sys', 'hiberfil.sys', 'UsrClass.dat.LOG', '/WINDOWS', '/Program Files', '/Progra~1', '/Config.Msi', '/$AVG*', '/cygwin*', 'autoexec.ch', 'config.ch', '/*/Cache', '/RECYCLER', '/RECYCLER/', '/*/Temporary?Internet?Files', '/System?Volume?Information', '/System Volume Information/', '/Documents and Settings/*/Application Data/Microsoft/Search/Data', '/Documents and Settings/*/Local Settings/Application Data/Google/Chrome/User Data/Default/Cache', '/Documents and Settings/*/Local Settings/Application Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/*.default/Cache', '/Documents and Settings/*/Local Settings/Temp', '/Documents and Settings/*/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files', '/System Volume Information', '/Temp', '/MSOCache/' ] However even though the above excludes have been put in the config file, i see these directories/ files being backed up. How do i remove them from the pool ? And ensure they aren't backed up ? Would really appreciate the help on this. -- Thanks and Regards, Anand -- Come build with us! I am replying to your mail, because i was the one who started the thread about "BackupPC_link got error -4 when callingMakeFileLink". Here are some explanations and details 1. I used an rpm to install backuppc which has its path for installation and backup location embeded in it. 2. Due to less knowledge about how backuppc works, i tried to change the path, and thus resulted in the errors which were posted by me. 3. Eventually with the help of list users, i was able to resolve the issue. To make sure you don't mess up things the way i did, i would advise you to install the version from sf.net website. The install allows you to customize the paths all at the configuration/ installation time. Doing this, the errors disappeared for me atleast. [BackupPC-users] can't find ip address
Hi, I am using backuppc in a dhcp environment and while setting up a windows client, i am facing problems with backuppc. Its not able to detect the ip address of the machine. In the client address, i place the machine name comp-076, using method rsyncd, list all the shares properly. When i try to force backuppc to do a full backup, i see the following error. Error: Can't find IP address for comp-076 comp-076 is a DHCP host, and I don't know its IP address. I checked the netbios name of x.x.x.x, and found that that machine is not comp-076. Until I see comp-076 at a particular DHCP address, you can only start this request from the client machine itself. Now when i try to lookup the dhcp address myself on the command line (as user backuppc), i get the reply properly nmblookup comp-076 querying comp-076 on 172.20.255.255 172.20.196.251 comp-076<00> Now i am confused here, when i can get the ip address using command line, why can't backuppc find the ip address ? Any help on this will be appreciated. -- Thanks and Regards, Anand -- ___ BackupPC-users mailing list BackupPC-users@lists.sourceforge.net List:https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/backuppc-users Wiki:http://backuppc.wiki.sourceforge.net Project: http://backuppc.sourceforge.net/

The reason i asked is because the amount of data i am going to backup is 1T+ and thus creating a tar of the same would be unnecessary time consuming job, whereas infact i would only want to rsync the data across to another location. Rsync is only going to help if most of the files already exist at the target. There is probably some sort of server message to start a restore, but I haven't tried it. If you are set up to use rsync to back up and your rsyncd permits write access a restore will also work over rsync. My main motive is incase i don't have access to a browser, i can still restore files using console. My backup server runs behind a firewall, i only have console access to the server. I assume you mean you have ssh access to the server. If so, you just need to learn the tricks of ssh tunneling. If you specify -L8000:127.0.0.1:80 on your ssh command line or the equivalent with putty's ssh/tunnels, you can point your browser on the same machine at http://localhost:8000/cgi-bin/BackupPC_Admin and get a connection. Or, for something even nicer for remote work, look at the NX client/server from http://www.nomachine.com - or your distribution might include the freenx version of the server. These give you a full GUI remote desktop with good performance over an ssh connection. Yes i know about the port forwarding, but still thanks for pointing out in details. Is there a way to backup open files like outlook.pst using backuppc ? I know that there is something called vss for windows which allows you to do so, but has anyone had any success ? Re: [BackupPC-users] new to backuppc
I finally setup my first winxp node with backuppc. Now i am facing some problem here. Node Name : a3520 DHCP : Selected When i do an nmblookup on the node, i get the following nmblookup a3520 querying a3520 on 10.211.55.255 10.211.55.3 a3520<00> Looking at backuppc interface, i see it uses nmblookup -A CLIENTNAME to do a lookup. I get the following results using -A switch nmblookup -A a3520 Looking up status of 0.0.0.0 No reply from 0.0.0.0 Now since the above doesn't return any results, backuppc eventually is not able to connect / backup the client. I tried to use -B switch as well for specifying broadcast address, however, even that didn't work.
