The best method would be to build the RPM for the 3.2 version.

That way, you'll keep the advantages of the package (ie. SELinux
contexts, paths and so on).

I already worked on a 3.2 version of the RPM package, but for Feodra,
not for EL-5 ; the upgrade policy is to keep stable software in the
repositories, not to put latest version.
As far as I remember, most of the specfile is the same for 3.1 and 3.2.

I'm really not an expert, and I did not yet upgrade any of my
installations from 3.1 to 3.2 ; but keeping files from /ec/BackupPC
would be sufficient.

OK, the RPMs are really not the same at all.
This one, for example, does not provide any SELinux module, there are
probably other differences I've not seen (specfiles are very different
since zmanda write only one for many distributions/versions).

First of all, the version you pointed out is 3.2.0beta ; on Fedora/EPEL
repositories provides 3.1.0 for now.

As for the differences beetween RPM themselves, there is no zmanda SRPM

Connection problems are strange, but indeed related to the pacakge itself.

As for reading backup location... The package can only handle the
default location. If that is changed (most of the cases for a backup
system) you're in charge to check SELinux and right management issues ;
any package can do it for you.

As I'm not selinux lists subscriber, I do not know exactly what the
probelm was, and what has been done to be solved. Maybe could you send
me in private a link to the archives pointing to that particular discution?

>> On the other hand, I would accept any help improving the Fedora/EPEL
>> package with a great pleasure.
>>
> Well I have a little time so I'd be happy to help you. Just tell me how.
>

Strange paths made SELinux unhappy.
I started to implement the ability to change the bindir at install time,
but I failed...

As far as I remember, BackupPC is not really FHS compliant beacause:
- LOCK file stands in /var/log,
- PID file stands in /var/log,
- binaries stands in /usr/share.
- maybe others I've forget/I've never seen

Also, some kind of temporary files are created althought they should not
(I'll have to investigate a bit to find out what was the problem).

These corrrections would benefit directly to BackupPC project (for the
next release) and to packaging (globally) ; in my opinion.

> Thanks,
> Steve
>

If you plan to make changes to BackupPC source code, you should use the
current list (or more probably the devel one).
If you have issues/questions/bugs/whatever about the package or SELinux
issues, feel free to report them on the bugzilla (public reports would
benefit to others I guess).

They do not just ask me to change the pid and lock file ; but also to
change the binary dir for example, and that is a very huge change in the
backuppc code I do not know at all (I'm just a packager, not a perl
dev). Additionnaly, I do not have time to do that for now.

> 3) Are there any plans to fix the original problem in F11?
>

When I used F-11, I had no problems. I've tested under a VM when the bug
was reported, that worked for me. I can "quickly" fix PID file and LOCK
file locations (I did not do that already because it was not enought
having official selinux rules for the daemon according to SELinux team).
That may solve your issue, I really do not know, let me know on the BZ.

By the way, I'm using backuppc with SELinux enabled under F-12 with
exactly the same SELinux rules and files location ; and I do not have
any problems so far.

Basically, just run "restorecon -R -v /var/log/BackupPC" should does the
trick ; files under that directory should be labelled
"system_u:object_r:httpd_sys_content_t:s0" (the contexts I have on my
F-12 box) and of course have to be owned by "backuppc" user.

On the other hand, I would accept any help improving the Fedora/EPEL
package with a great pleasure.

];

$Conf{BackupFilesExclude} = {
   '/home/remi/' => ['.*']
};

Hope that could helps,

The issue appears also on command line... I had ommited the space

Anyways, error is exactly the same:

Well, all these ones seems to be shipped by the perl package on my
Fedora, following files are present on my system:
/usr/lib64/perl5/5.10.0/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/IO/File.pm
/usr/lib64/perl5/5.10.0/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/IO/Handle.pm
/usr/lib64/perl5/5.10.0/x86_64-linux-thread-multi/IO/Seekable.pm

That should be ok I think.

The user that has reported me the error on the bugzilla did that also,
the error is:
Can't locate object method "tell" via package "IO::Handle" at
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.10.0/Archive/Zip/Member.pm line 746.

Looks like we do not get here what is expected... Let me know if I can
make visible some other errors messages that could help you a bit.

Unfortunately, I have not seen anything like an error message nor html
text :-(
"file" commad says that's a zip file, "unzip" command says that's not a
valid one ("End-of-central-directory signature not found. [...]").
vim shows sort of binary data...

> Also, is there anything in the LOG file?
>

LOG file does not show anything else than the attempt to restore a zip file:
"2010-01-20 22:34:47 User trasher downloaded zip archive for venus,
backup 190; files were: /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf"

Trying to restore the above (httpd.conf from venus host) gives me the
following zip file:
http://ulysses.fr/restore.zip

Maybe that broken file could help you finding out what's wrong here...
To produce the file I've just asked to restore a zip file from the web
interface, with a compression of 5.

What's a "normal restore"? If you mean restoring on the host, without
getting a zip or tar file, that works well too.

The exact same problem has been reported to me with 3.1 on Fedora's
Bugzilla :
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=543660

- from the web interface, if you try to get a zip file to restore with a
compression value > 0 ; you'll get a wrgon empty zip file.
- from the web interface, if you try to get a zip with compression=0 ;
you'll get a valid file
- from the command line, all goes well, with any compression level (so I
guess this is not a missing perl module)

There is no error message anywhere, and I do not know which args are
passed to the command from the web interface.
That should be a problem to debug the issue, so if someone could tell me
what to change in the code to get some message helping on debug I should
maybe produce more detailled error (sorry, but I do not know perl :( ).

Regards,
Johan

Backup of files under mysql directory will not work if you use innodb
databases (at least)...

For such a backup, you will have to stop the database, do the file copy
and then restart ; or proceed mysqldump command.

Anyways, I'm not sure that simply copying files is really recommended,
even if it appears to work (it should only work 99 per cent of time ;) ).

Hello,

If you've used the official RPM from Fedora, all configuration files are
under /etc/BackuPC. This path and /var/lib/BackupPC (were stands your
backups) are normally the only ones you have to care about.

Additionnaly, you may want to keep the content of /var/log/BackupPC ;
were log files stands.

Hope that help,

Hello,

Not sure it's really BackupPC related... I remember that Windows refuses
to copy some files when they're in use ; you maybe could check if it was
the case for these files when you've tried to bakcup them.

Hope that helps,
Johan

Indeed, that's an SELinux related problem.

Problem here is :
1- fc6 is no longer supported
2- (the most important one) BackupPC's version shipped with FC6 is
probably 2.x series, I've implemented SELinux polivy for BackupPC
starting at 3.x ; so path are differents, etc, etc, etc.

As I've alredy said on the BackupPC's mailing list, you've got (imo) tow
options :
1- upgrade to F-8 or F-9
2- use audit2allow to build your own policy module

Anyways, I do not thing using an old BackupPC version is a good thing.
