Thanks for figuring this out.  This was also reported by Les Stott.
It will shortly be fixed in CVS and will be in the 3.0.0beta2 release.

Been using BackupPC Beta 3.0 for a while, its great to be
able to view and edit right from the web interface.  I don’t know if
anyone else has a problem with the config.pl file after changing it through the
web interface.  Error comes back, can’t read config.pl file.  This is
what I have found to be the problem:
