Also remember that gmail will thread your messages together and can mark your message as read since it will be the same as the one in your sent folder. Took me a while to realize that also. I see that sent messages are in the Sent folder of my GMAil account; now I am trying to find a way in Thunderbird to automatically run a filter on this folder and not only on received messages. I pull the gmail messages via pop to my own server (with gmail configured to archive them) and use thunderbird/imap to access them and reply, and rarely use the gmail web interface.
