How do I check that? I can see lot's of entries for /home/dwilliam and other users in the log file before it exits with the tar error. If you can point me in the right direction to determine if it is really running as root I can confirm. I don't use sudo much but it should have a log file somewhere - probably /var/log/sudo. Also, maybe you really have a corrupt file system or a hardware error causing the tar error exit. You could try running 'tar -cvf - /target_dir |cat /dev/null' to see if it completes without errors. Don't omit the pipe - if gnu tar outputs directly to /dev/null it will not bother to read the file contents. Also, since this is on the same host, are you sure you aren't recursively backing up the archive filesystem where the contents are being extracted? -- Les Mikesell lesmikes...@gmail.com -- Live Security Virtual Conference Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond. Re: [BackupPC-users] Backup failing with tar error 512
Hi Les David, I also run BackupPC with VISUDO and also get the 512 error on localhost when backing up home. I tried switching it to rsync, but could not get it to work that way. Since then, my hard drive mounted at /var/lib/backuppc has failed. I thought that it's failing may have be part of the problem causing the 512 error. I have since replaced the hard drive and set it up like before. I am still getting messages that tar exited with error 512' and that a partial backup was saved. And, YES, backuppc is running as root on my system by using 'sudo'. The command line in BPC is '$Conf{TarClientCmd} = /usr/bin/env LC_ALL=C sudo /bin/tar -c -v -f - -C $shareName --totals'. -- ken On Thu, 2012-04-26 at 22:38 -0400, David Williams wrote: On 4/26/2012 8:33 AM, Les Mikesell wrote: On Thu, Apr 26, 2012 at 12:03 AM, David Williams dwilli...@dtw-consulting.com wrote: Is this a localhost backup? Re: [BackupPC-users] Backup failing with tar error 512
Hello Norberto, On the H-89, H17/Z67-IDE and the H8, H17/Z67-IDE I have found no problems since we changed the two chips to faster version on the H-89, H17/Z67-IDE. A few weeks ago when I was testing the Z67 card parity chips is when I first noticed that the H-89, H37/Z67-IDE machine wasn't working just right. Yesterday, I worked with HDOS all day and it seems to be working OK. Today, I started working on the CP/M side and had some weird stuff happening. After a lot of testing and trying things, it hit me that it was a read/write issue and probably the same thing that I ran into on the other H-89 that replacing the two chips fixed. I will probably remove these chips from one of the other units tomorrow and see if that clears the problem. Or since the H8 unit is outboard and the H37's is also running outboard, I can just switch the CF card adapter. If the problem clears up, then I will be pretty certain that all is OK. Also, I am not certain that I have the latest firmware in the H37/Z67-IDE unit. I will check this tomorrow as well and report back. -- ken On Thu, 2012-04-26 at 23:25 -0400, Kenneth L.
