Now that I think about it, the Pool is not my problem, but rather the
storage. The FULL-Pool was chosen, but it wrote it to the INCREMENTAL
Storage Device rather then then the FULL storage device.

Am I getting confused? I do not believe your suggestions will resolve my
issue.

I am running a manual FULL right now to get a FULL backup before the
Incremental schedule kicks off which I think will fix everything. It
would be nice that this would work automatically when a new client is
added and the first backup is run.

If I am not correct in my thinking, let me know.

Thanks.

Yes, I'm using this. It's working fine for automatically scheduled jobs.

You still have to be careful if you - for example - manually start an
incremental backup which gets propagated into a full one - then none
of these configuration settings will be consulted, and you must take
care to manually adjust pool, storage etc.

Use the "FullPool" and "DifferentialPool" (and eventually
"IncrementalPool") options, i. e. something like this:

Schedule {
  Name = "WeeklyCycleHydra"
  Run = FullFullPool = FULL 1st sun
at 00:10
  Run = DifferentialFullPool = FULL DifferentialPool = DIFF 2nd-5th sun
at 00:10
  Run = Incremental FullPool = FULL DifferentialPool = DIFF IncrementalPool
= INCR  mon-sat at 00:10
}

Hi,

On 4/25/2006 6:34 PM, Scott Ruckh wrote:

I thought I would ask this question again as I think it got lost inanother
topic.

I have a schedule that looks like the following:

Schedule {
  Name = "WeeklyCycle"
  Run = Level=Full Storage=FSD_FULL FullPool=FULL-Pool 1st sun at 02:05
  Run = Level=Differential Storage=FSD_DIFF
DifferentialPool=DIFF-Pool2nd-5th sun at 02:05
  Run = Level=Incremental Storage=FSD_INCR
IncrementalPool=INCR-Poolmon-sat at 02:05
}

If the Incremental schedule is run, but then later changed to a FULL
backdue to not having a previous FULL, the job keeps the Pool as defined
by the job definition, but writes it to the Storage device defined in
theSchedule (in this case FSD_INCR).

The job, by default, is defined to use Pool, FULL-Pool, and storage,FSD_FULL.

How do I get a job that has been changed from incremental or
differentialto FULL to use the FULL storage device?

I do that manually (as it usualy only happens when I'm working on the
backups anyway): From a console, use a command like 'run level=Full
storage=FSD_FULL job=whatever'

As far as I know there's no solution to automatically achieve the
behaviour you (and I) want. Perhaps once the python interface is more
evolved and allows modifying lots of job deails when a job is set up...

   Solution: start the daemon manually or create a script to start the

If I understand you correctly the solution is quite simple. In your
/usr/local/etc/rc.d directory rename your scripts.

I rename my scripts with a number prefix to the order I want them
started. Example,

000.mysql-client.sh.OFF
100.mysql-server.sh
600.darwin_streaming_server.sh
700.proftpd.sh
800.apache.sh
996.streamingadminserver.sh.OFF
998.rsyncd.sh.OFF
999.bacula.sh

FreeBSD ports maintainers *could* do this during the install, provided
they had some way of knowing what order you needed things started in,
which they don't.

man rc.d will explain it quite well.

  Yes that was the solution + man rc.d.

 The only thing now is to know why sometimes /usr/local/etc/rc.d/bacula-
dr.sh stop sometimes dosent kill the daemon and others success. 80%Fail

Read the start script and try running the commands manually. This almost
always shows the problem to me.

Keep in mind though that your login environment and the scripts
environment are almost certainly different. So just because it works for
you manually, does not mean it will always work for the script!

Yes, I did add it, but somehow it got lost. Strange. That rarely happens.

Anyway, I have added it back, and it is now committed, so unlikely to get lost

Thanks for the reply, but I believe you have excluded the /var/log/lastlog
file all together. This is not the desired result.

Re: [Bacula-users] Backups too big, and other questions

2006-04-25 Thread Pieter (NL)

I use following filesets. First exclude in options and after that include:

FileSet {
Name= "bsdserver1 files"
Include {
Options {
signature   = MD5
compression = GZIP
Exclude = yes
WildDir = "/proc"
WildDir = "/dev"
}
File = "/etc"
File = "/usr/local/etc"
File = "/usr/image/part2/home"
File = "/usr/image/part2/profiles"
File = "/usr/image/part2/oldproj"
File = "/usr/image/part1/mysql.bak"
}
}

Maybe for you something like this will work:

FileSet {
  Name = "Firewall Full"

  Include {
Options {
  compression = GZIP
  signature = MD5
  exclude = yes
  WildFile = "/var/log/lastlog"
WildDir = /proc
WildDir = /tmp
WildDir = /sys
WildDir = /dev
WildDir = /.journal
WildDir = /.fsck
WildDir = /mnt
WildDir = /var/spool/squid
WildDir = /BACKUPS
}
File = /
File = /boot
File = /home
File = /var
  }

I am not sure my FileSet is correct (see below), but it "sort-of" worked.
The backup still took 3 hours longer then if I completely excluded
/var/log/lastlog.

FileSet {
  Name = "Firewall Full"

  Include {
Options {
  signature = MD5
  sparse = yes
  compression = GZIP
}
File = /var/log/lastlog
  }

  Include {
Options {
  compression = GZIP
  signature = MD5
}
File = /
File = /boot
File = /home
  }

  Include {
Options {
  compression = GZIP
  signature = MD5
  wildfile = "/var/log/lastlog"
  Exclude = yes
}
File = /var
  }

  Exclude {
File = /proc
File = /tmp
File = /sys
File = dev
File = /.journal
File = /.fsck
File = /mnt
File = /var/spool/squid
File = /BACKUPS
  }
}

The good news is the backup only took about 13GB of space as opposed to
the 205GB of space it had gobbled up before I had to cancel the job. The
bad news is that this backup is 3 hours longer then running the backup and
just excluding /var/log/lastlog.

Does the above FileSet look correct for what I am trying to accomplish?

Thanks for the help.

I've got it working. Problem is the array_merge function. For phplot I've

There are some other phpscripts i've adjusted
classes.inc:

classes.inc: $whole_result[] =
array_merge((array)$row["$derecha"],(array)$row[$izquierda]);
classes.inc: $whole_result[] =
array_merge((array)$row["Jobid"],(array)$row["JobFiles"],(array)$row["JobBytes"]);
classes.inc: $spr2 =
array_merge($spr2,array($row["Name"]=>$row["SUM(JobBytes)"]));

In the olden days, prior to the wide-spread use of 64 bit computers,
Unix user IDs were 32 bit integers, and the lastlog file had an entry
for each one. There were few enough that the bit of wasted space
didn't matter. At some point, Red Hat changed user IDs to 64 bit
integers on 64 bit platforms, and since the lastlog file still had an
entry for each one, there were now so many user IDs that the wasted
space does matter, bloating the lastlog file to 1.2TB as you've noted.
They've corrected this problem in recent releases of their
distribution.

$ uname -p
x86_64
$ ls -l /var/log/lastlog
-r  1 root root 11390920 Apr 25 07:49 /var/log/lastlog

Just FYI.

VERIFY that this is happening. It is very easy to get the syntax wrong and
have /BACKUPS being backed up unintentionally.

Wow, do you have that many users???

Lastlog is a database file containing (as its name suggests) information
on each user's last sucessful login

I am guessing I can exclude this file, but is there a more graceful way of
handling this file.

Yes, use the appropriate Options flags for sparse file handling in
bacula-dir.conf.

Note that you'd have had the same problem using tar unless using sparse
file handling options there too.

makes it very clear that it's not recommended for production systems.

6) Does not track deletions between full backups.

Show me more than 3 (quite expensive) commercial packages which do this.

This is a common failing of almost all backup systems and is hardly
exclusive to Bacula.

Restoration will uncover
deleted files. Over a long period of time this could lead to restorations
that exceed the space on the partition that is being restored especially for
sites that have long retention periods and heavy tunover.

Do Full backups more often. By policy we only run long cycle times on
filesystems which are mostly append-only.

As far as restoring a snapshot of any particular instant in time goes, I
suspect the only practical way of doing this would be to generate and save
a filesystem index at each backup (this wouldn't be difficult, but would
be overkill in 90% of sites)

As always, the code is opensource and if you feel you can improve it, then
by all means, chip in.

For our site (~20TiB of astronomical and space probe data), the practical
alternatives to Bacula are commercial solutions with pricetags starting
somewhat past $10,000 and going upwards from there.

As it is, Bacula is winning many converts from lesser-specified commercial
offerings, as well as many other OSS offerings which are more difficult to
operate.

WRT the comments about the configuration files, the single biggest problem
with them is not their complexity, but the spaghetti nature of the
default/example definition files. I intend working on this shortly, as
with something like 60 backup sets to manage, it's becoming a handful.

[Bacula-users] Restore Error

2006-04-25 Thread Danie

When I try and do a restore I get the following error :

*restore
Using default Catalog name=MyCatalog DB=bacula

First you select one or more JobIds that contain files
to be restored. You will be presented several methods
of specifying the JobIds. Then you will be allowed to
select which files from those JobIds are to be restored.

To select the JobIds, you have the following choices:
1: List last 20 Jobs run
2: List Jobs where a given File is saved
3: Enter list of comma separated JobIds to select
4: Enter SQL list command
5: Select the most recent backup for a client
6: Select backup for a client before a specified time
7: Enter a list of files to restore
8: Enter a list of files to restore before a specified time
9: Find the JobIds of the most recent backup for a client
   10: Find the JobIds for a backup for a client before a specified time
   11: Enter a list of directories to restore for found JobIds
   12: Cancel
Select item:  (1-12): 5
Query failed: CREATE TABLE temp (JobId INTEGER UNSIGNED NOT
NULL,JobTDate BIGINT UNSIGNED,ClientId INTEGER UNSIGNED,Level
CHAR,JobFiles INTEGER UNSIGNED,JobBytes BIGINT UNSIGNED,StartTime
TEXT,VolumeName TEXT,StartFile INTEGER UNSIGNED,VolSessionId INTEGER
UNSIGNED,VolSessionTime INTEGER UNSIGNED): ERR=Error writing file
'./bacula/temp.frm' (Errcode: 28)

Query failed: CREATE TABLE temp1 (JobId INTEGER UNSIGNED NOT
NULL,JobTDate BIGINT UNSIGNED): ERR=Error writing file
'./bacula/temp1.frm' (Errcode: 28)

I first thought it might be a space issue , but there is definitely
enough space. Any ideas?

[Bacula-users] forgotten tapes

2006-04-25 Thread Peter ZG

Hi,

I'm new to bacula, basically looking for new OSS solution for backup.
The setup and basic tests went smooth, having some problems with
rotation config.

My current backup setup is GFS running on two sets of tapes (each set
runs every other day, no Sunday backups)
My question is what are my options with bacula if a required tape is not
available on the time of backup?

Can I:
1. skip it and just go ahead with the next backup
2. wait until the valid tape is inserted

If I choose to wait, can I continue with tapes from the other set?

Thanks,
Peter
