[Bacula-users] Restores -- XP Client -- Bacula 1.38.8
I am having some problems with restores, or possible a mis-understanding of how restores work. I am running Bacula 1.38.8, both server (CentOS x86_64) and client. One of my clients is a Windows XP machine running the VSS enabled bacula client. Full backups run once weekly with incremental backups running the other days. All backups are done to disk storage device. When I tested restores orginally (only having on Full backup in the catalog), everything worked as expected. Now some time has passed and I have a catalog filled with several backups (full and incremental) for different clients. I tried using the wx-console app from the Windows XP machine to perform a restore. After selecting the tab for restores and going into restore mode, I entered all the information pertaining to the last full backup for this particular client including the FULL-pool and enterting a date one second after the Full backup in the Before: field. I marked several top-level sub-directories. Modified the job with the correct client, and kicked off the restore. Very few of the files actually restored. I tried this several times changing the directories, dates, Pools, etc., and I was never able to get all the files restored. I ran what I believe is the same restore from bconsole on the server and all files restored as expected. Is anyone else experiencing similar problems? If not, can you tell me what I am doing wrong? Thank You. -- --- Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security? Re: [Bacula-users] Question: decision how tapes are choosed from a pool
Few days ago, I had almost the same question and Arno gave me the following volume cycle: because job count or size limit exceeded Append ---> Used ^ | | First Job writes to Retention time passed | | the volume and recycling takes | | place | | v Recycledwrote: Hi,I recently studied the Pool/Volumes section in the manual, but I didn'tfind a hint about which algorithm is running when bacula has to choosea tape from a pool for an actual job.Example (or my actual problem, you know ;-) - the system is an autochanger with barcode, 60 slots and 2 LTO-3 drives, Bacula version 1.38.7, running well with dozends of clients, in principle- there's a new pool with two freshly labeled, empty tapes - two jobs are scheduled at the same time, doing full backup in that pool the jobs have same priority et. al., only the client names differ- the first tape is loaded into drive 0, the first job completes successfully. The tape remains in the drive, with some 100 MBs written out and state "Append"- then, the second job unloads the tape, loads the other one in the same drive and writes to _that_ tape. Why? The first tape was OK and loaded! - finally I have both new tapes written, and will get some problems in future, because I want the two tapes used alternately using automatic volume retention and recycling. The parallel initial time stamp on the tapes will be confusing.I'm wondering if there's a clear algorithm in Bacula which decides tochoose some tape. I've got some more pools with similar configuration, and there, the tapes are (until today) used one after aneother. Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula on SunFire280R / SPARC
Gabriele Bulfon wrote: Hello, I have bacula running on both recent Sun v20z / AMD64 and SunFire280R / SPARC. I recently discovered a different Bacula behaviour on the two platforms, with same OS, same Bacula version and same SCSI tape devices. - On v20z machines, the throughput of backups is generally around 4000-8000KB/s. - On 280R machines, the throughput of backups is much slower: around 2000KB/s on self backup (same SD/Director machine as the FD), 6000KB/s when backing up other Solaris FD machines, 100-400KB/s when backing up other Windows FD Machines! The low throughput happening when backing up the windows machines, causes the nightly jobs to finish too late (around 11AM) when these machines have a lot of GB of data. So I checked for differences between the v20z and the 280R configurations, and discovered this strange thing: - if I run "tapeinfo -f /dev/rmt/0" on a v20z, the first line shows "Product Type: Tape Drive". - if I run "tapeinfo -f /dev/rmt/0" on a 280R, the first line shows "Product Type: Disk Drive". How comes that the 280R returns such a wrong information? May the slow throughput be a consequence of this wrong setting? If not, what can be causing this slow throughput? bash-2.05# ./tapeinfo -f /dev/rmt/0 Product Type: Tape Drive Have you tried rebooting and running a probe-scsi-all from the OBP? Though on my Sun E220R I see only around 2000Kb/sec for a local backup due to the rather poor IO speeds. I see around 5000Kb/sec from slower machine across the network. The IO Speed on my 220R is only 40Mb/sec across the SCSI controller so take this into account. --- Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security? Be very wary about Linux and IDE Tape Drives. I bought a Sony SDX-560 (IDE, 80/208 GB, 12MB/s) for 800 US$. Unfortunately it would only work using PIO mode on Linux even though DMA mode worked fine on Windows. There is a SATA version of this drive that I haven't tried, but suspect it would work better than the IDE one. I ended up buying the SCSI version SDX-550 for about the same price as the IDE one. There are some software packages I usually install from source, and I think I have god reasons to do so (in well defined cases). We understand how frustrating this CVS outage must be to you and your users; however, our top priority remains preservation of the integrity of your data. The series of CVS hardware failures prompted us to expedite the deployment of planed improvements to our CVS infrastructure, drawing upon much of the knowledge that we gained from our Subversion deployment. Our improved CVS service architecture, which we plan to deploy tomorrow afternoon (2006-05-12), will offer greater performance and stability and will eliminate several single points of failure. The Site Status page (https://www.sf.net/docs/A04) will be updated as soon as the new infrastructure is rolled out. In the interim, please read the important information provided below to learn about how these changes will affect your project. Summary of changes, effective 2006-05-12: 1. Hostname for CVS service Old: cvs.sourceforge.net New: PROJECT_UNIX_NAME.cvs.sourceforge.net This change will require new working copies to be checked out of all repositories (so control files in the working copy will point to the right place). We will be updating the instructions we supply, but instructions that your team has written within documentation, etc. will need to be updated. cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/gaim co gaim would be changed to cvs -d:pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvsroot/gaim co gaim 2. ViewCVS We are moving from ViewCVS to its successor, ViewVC. ViewVC is currently in use for our Subversion service. 3. Sync delay Old: CVS pserver, tarballs and ViewCVS provided against a separate server which is a minimum of three hours behind developer CVS. New: ViewVC will be provided against developer CVS (it will be current). CVS pserver will be provided against a secondary server (not developer server) with a maximum expected delay of two hours. Follow-up work is planned (this infrastructure takes us 80% of the way) to essentially eliminate the sync delay. 4. Read-only rsync service As a new service offering, we are now providing read-only rsync access against developer CVS. This allows projects to efficiently make on-demand backups of their entire CVS repository. All projects should be making regular backups of their CVS repository contents using this service. 5. Nightly tarball service Nightly tarball service is being dropped in lieu of read-only rsync service. Projects which currently depend on nightly tarballs for repository backups will need to begin using rsync to make a backup copy of their repository contents. We see this as a major functional improvement. For a number of reasons, tarballs have fallen out of sync with the data in the repository at times in the past few years. Tarballs required a substantial amount of additional disk, and I/O to generate. The move to read-only rsync allows backups to be produced on-demand, with an update frequency chosen by the project. 6. Points of failure In the past, developer CVS service for all projects was provided from a single host. CVS pserver service was provided from individual backend heads based on a split of the data. Under our new design, developer CVS and most of our CVS-related services are provided from one of ten CVS hosts (count subject to increase with growth). Each host i

[Bacula-users] Waiting for client that is offline
Hi, I'm running a bacula director and storage daemon on a Gentoo Linux system at home (version 1.38.8). I've also installed a file daemon on one of my Windows XP workstations (version 1.38.8). Bacula is properly configured to backup this workstation, which works great by the way. Only, when this Windows workstation is powered off, after 40 minutes I get an error report from Bacula telling me that it could not reach the client's file daemon and that it canceled the job. I was wondering if there's a possibility to wait for an unlimited amount of time for the workstation, without blocking other jobs to be run in the meantime? Then, when you would power on the Windows workstation, it would begin a backup at that moment. At work I'm using Retrospect in a similar setup since we have many portables. Whenever one of our employees connects its portable into the network, and when no backup has been executed for the last 24 hours, a backup is automatically started. It also has a nice feature to pop up a notification that stays open for 20 seconds, which allows to defer the backup for an amount of time from the client side. I've searched in the manuals and found a "Max Wait Time" property (and resp property for Incremental and Differential backup), but setting them doesn't seem to have any effect. I still get the error mail after 40 minutes. I've included the settings for the job below: Job { name = "avathar-3200" Enabled = yes JobDefs = "WindowsClientDefs" Client = avathar-fd FileSet = "avathar-3200" # Wait a maximum of 23 hours Max Wait Time = 82800 Incremental Max Wait Time = 82800 Differential Max Wait Time = 82800 Write Bootstrap = "/var/lib/bacula/Avathar3200.bsr" } Another possibility would be to wake up the client using ether-wake. You could ping the workstation to see if it's online... wake it up when it's not... make a backup... and power it down again. This way the backup would be guaranteed to run each day. Has anybody done a successful job at setting up something like this? thanks, Dimitri begin:vcard fn:Dimitri Goethals n:Goethals;Dimitri adr:;;Van Gorplaan 32;Putte;;2580;Belgium email;internet:[EMAIL PROTECTED] tel;work:+32 3 890 46 15 tel;home:+32 15 75 37 34 tel;cell:+32 485 96 33 18 x-mozilla-html:TRUE version:2.1 end:vcard

Each host is independent, and makes a backup copy of the repository data of another host (which is used to provide the pserver CVS service). Failure of a single host will impact only the availability of data on that host. Since the data is split among a larger number of hosts, the size of data impacted by an individual host outage is substantially smaller, and the time required for us to restore service will be substantially shorter. This rapid architecture change has been made possible specifically using the research we performed for our recent launch of Subversion service. We've applied our best practices, produced a substantial amount of internal documentation, and kept an eye toward maintainability.
[Bacula-users] bacula-1.38.9 rpm packages released
Bacula-1.38 RPM Release Notes 06 May 2006 D. Scott Barninger The Gnome2 console currently will not build on older versions of Gtk2 (< 2.4) so you will see some missing gconsole packages. You _should_ be able to keep your gconsole package at 1.38.8 without problems if you upgrade since this release only incorporates minor bug fixes. If you are rebuilding the src rpm use the nobuild_gconsole switch. Release 1.38.9-1 This release incorporates a number of significant changes. These release notes refer to the rpm packaging only. Please refer to the release notes and changelog in the tarball or on sourceforge for complete information on all changes. *** * WXWindows console added * *** A new package bacula-wxconsole has been added. Building this requires wxGTK >=2.6 currently available on SuSE 10.0 and Fedora Core 4. * * Fix for daemon user/group problem * * Prior to the 1.38.8 release the pre-install scripts attempted to create the user bacula with primary group as both bacula and disk which failed. There was still a problem with these scripts in 1.38.8, noted in bug 605, on RedHat platforms which by default attempt to create a group with same name as the user (bacula) and failed because it had already been created. This has (I think) now been corrected with the addition of the -g parameter to the useradd commands and should work. ** * Build switch to turn off gnome console * ** If you do not wish to build gnome console --define "nobuild_gconsole 1" when rebuilding the srpm. ** * Mtx change * ** Mtx is no longer included in the server package, but is packaged separately for systems without an mtx package. *** * Database update * *** The 1.38 release requires an update to the bacula database structure from version 8 to version 9. A pre-install routine has been added to check for databases older than 8. In that event the install will exit with an error message indicating that the database must be updated to version 8 before installing this upgrade. Scripts for updating older database formats are available for download in the bacula-updatedb rpm package. In the event a version 8 database is detected a post-install routine will update the database after creating a backup file in the bacula working directory. * * Rescue package change * * The cdrom rescue scripts are now included in the 3 server and client packages and the bacula-rescue package is obsoleted. You should uninstall bacula-rescue if installed before upgrading. ** * Platform Notes * ** RedHat 7.x gconsole package is eliminated with this release due to the elimination of support for gnome 1. The spec file currently supports building on the following platforms: # RedHat builds --define "build_rh7 1" --define "build_rh8 1" --define "build_rh9 1" # Fedora Core build --define "build_fc1 1" --define "build_fc3 1" --define "build_fc4 1" # Whitebox Enterprise build --define "build_wb3 1" # RedHat Enterprise builds --define "build_rhel3 1" --define "build_rhel4 1" # CentOS build --define "build_centos3 1" --define "build_centos4 1" # SuSE build --define "build_su9 1" --define "build_su10 1" # Mandrake 10.x build --define "build_mdk 1" # Mandriva build --define "build_mdv 1" *** * Other build options * *** Database support (must select one) MySQL support: --define "build_mysql 1" # OR if using mysql 4.x define this # currently: Mandrake 10.x, SuSE 9.x & 10.x, RHEL4, fc4 --define "build_mysql4 1" PostgreSQL support: --define "build_postgresql 1" Sqlite support: --define "build_sqlite 1" Supress build of Gnome Console: --define "nobuild_gconsole 1" Enable X86-64 support --define "build_x86_64 1" Enable wxconsole: --define "build_wxconsole 1" --- Using Tomcat but need to do more? [Bacula-users] Retaining incremental with full backups
Good morning - I've not yet started using Bacula, but I'm getting ready to. I'm very impressed with how it works, and the documentation is clear and concise - even without having used bacula yet, I'm very impressed. One thing that I did not see in the documentation was how I could retain a set of incremental backups, with a full backup. What I'd like to do is do one full backup nightly, and then incremental backups every four hours, until the next nightly backup. I'd like to retain these incremental backups for as long as I retain their corresponding full backup. I'd like to have at least ten days' worth of these "sets". I did not see this type of setup in the documentation. If anyone would care to explain this to me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! -dant --- Using Tomcat but need to do more? Yes , of course. In the meantime I found that it is no bacula problem. There is only one possible constellation in FreeBSDs sa driver in this context. The driver asks for the Position (scsi_read_position) and the answer is : SA_RPOS_UNCERTAIN In this case the driver sets the error code : Invalid argument We are exchanging some hardware now. [Bacula-users] Verify the backup before the latest one...
Afternoon, Is it possible to perform a VolumetoCatalog verify job of a backup other than the most recent one? My Bacula setup performs full backups on Friday nights and backs up 10 servers. It does incremental backups on the other nights of the week. I want to setup a scheduled verify job of some of the servers to confirm the data has been successfully written to tape. However, the time required to perform the backups and then verify some of them exceeds 24 hours - this impacts the scheduled start time of my incremental backups. I have a max wait time of 23hours set on all my jobs so they should abort before the incrementals begin, however if a long verify job is in progress this delays the incrementals - however that's another issue. My latest plan was to delay the verification of the full backups until Sunday after the incrementals have completed, however I cant find any way to specify that I want to verify the last full backup or the second last backup or even jobid = xx. Trying to run a verify thru bconsole I get the option to specify the job but not a specific instance of that job having run. The documentation all points to the VolumetoCatalog job verifying the last backup so suspect I'm grasping at straws but I was wondering if anyone knew anyway to specify a previous backup to verify. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers, Troy. --- Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security? Here comes the "client run after failed job" lacking feature again. I'm backing up FreeBSD snapshots and there have been cases where the server runs out of disk space after a failed job because of the snapshot that was not deleted. So I've been thinking to create some pseudo-job that would run after all the jobs (just like the job backing up catalog) and delete possibly existing snapshots with "client run before job" script. [Bacula-users] bacula-gui beta release
Hello All, I've released bacula-gui-CVS20060514 to sourceforge to hopefully get some testing on a couple new features in the bimagemgr utility. Anyone using an SQLite catalog and backing up to volume files is encouraged to try it out. All the usual beta caveats apply, don't use it in production, don't put your first born at risk etc. But do send bug reports. Thanks. Regards, Scott --- bimagemgr Release Notes Release 0.3 Configuration information has been separated out of bimagemgr.pl into a new file config.pm. This file will not be overwritten by the installer when upgrading in the future. If you are upgrading from earlier releases you will need to transfer your configuration information out of bimagemgr.pl into the new config.pm file. Due to the number of changes being done to the package the current versions may still be broken in some details. If you see more of these please use "reportbug bacula..." to inform us (the maintainers) about the problem. You didn't tell which database you use. But I can at least reproduce your problem with sqlite. A new package will probably be uploaded this weekend that fixes it. [Bacula-users] concurrent Backup for one job
Hello! I have a question concerning enabling concurrent backup for only one job: (a) I have several backup jobs backing up servers connected via a GBit LAN. These backups can go directly to tape, no spooling, one after the other. I don't want any concurrency between these backup jobs (b) I have one external server which I backup via a comparable slow connection. This backup is spooled to a local disk on the bacula machine. As the spooling of this backup is running very long, what I'd like to have is this job running and spooling to local disk concurrent with the others. I need to set "Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 2" on the director and the SD, I think, but I am not shure about the jobs: if I set both the (a) and (b) jobs to "Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 2", then, I think, the (a) jobs will run two at a time, too. On the other side, if I only set the (b) job to "Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 2", will it run concurrent with the (a) jobs, despite these are still set to "Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 1" ? Is there a way at all of having all local jobs (a) running individually and only the external spooled job (b) concurrent with the local (a) jobs? Thanks a lot! I think if we post our configs, it no doubt > So did I, read the whole manual, maybe a couple of years ago. I think 1.36 was the first release I seriously started to use, although there were some test runs before that. Number of pages in the documentation has increased a lot during that period of time. I'm not certain I would any more know where to look for information on some new features -without very much of browsing. I tried to re-read the manual maybe a year ago, but it was very frustrating: "I think I know this, no need to re-read". Oops, now I skipped 50 pages -wonder if there were something important new for me? Yes, there certainly was... The Bacula manual is very through and detailed, but it is a more like reference manual where you can check (or point it out to someone) what you already know, although it is mixed with examples etc. I sometimes have been thinking, that it might be worth splitting into two manuals: a detailed and precise reference manual, and introducory how to build / how to install & test run / how to configure your first (rather basic) backup system. The latter one might be enough to cover the latest version, the reference should also contain easy-to-see information since what release the feature in question has been available. And well indexed, too. > will help people find it easier to setup bacula but in the end we are > going to face more questions "I followed such-n-such config but it > doesn't work" and the infamous RTFM reply. > I agree. I think that kind of examples should be similar to ones currently in the manual: Verified and commented by someone skilled enough. Otherwise there exists the danger that "wild examples" guide to using some unwanted side effects, or features that are planned to be obsoleted in the releases to come. -- TiN --- Using Tomcat but need to do more?
