Re: [Bacula-users] [Bacula-devel] WindowsXP EFS - encrypting file system - How can I backup efs-encrypted files?

2008-01-27 Thread Kern Sibbald
Hello,

Currently the Bacula Win32 client has no code to handle EFS, so this requires
some implementation (i.e. it is not just a bug). To get something
implemented, you should follow our Feature Request procedure. Please see:
www.bacula.org -> Feature Request

Best regards,

Kern

Re: [Bacula-users] WindowsXP EFS - encrypting file system - How can I backup efs-encrypted files?

2008-01-27 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,
EFS encrypted files are not backed up. Those files are definitely not
copied to the volume, even though bacula says "Backup OK" with no
warnings - volume files is much too small.

I updated to 2.2.8 (all) and tried running fd,sd,dir and console on two
different computers with winXPsp2-up-to-date.
greetings,
Sebastian

[Bacula-users] Bacula 2.2.8 released

2008-01-27 Thread Kern Sibbald
Hello,

I have released the Bacula 2.2.8 tar source files and the Win32 binaries to
the bacula and Win32 to the Bacula Source Forge release areas. The Win32
binaries have not been tested.

Version 2.2.8 is a bug fix to version 2.2.7:
- It fixes bugs: 1036, 1033(doc), 1028, 1040, 1045(doc), 1030,
  1042(partially), and possibly bugs 1018 and 1032.
  Bugs 1018 and 1032 involve problems with multiple-drive autochangers,
  and are difficult to reproduce.
  See the ChangeLog for more details.

Note, version 2.2.8 has a few additional bugs fixed after the BETA 2.2.8
release.

Best regards,

Kern

2.2.8 ChangeLog
Release Version 2.2.8
25Jan08
kes Apply patch from Martin to correct bug #1040, bscan sets existing
 ClientId to zero.
kes Fixed important spelling error in doc -- bug #1045.
23Jan08
kes Move initialization of read/write res lock earlier in the code.
 This fixes the crash with a null conf file. This fixes bug
 #1030.
kes Redefine CURES in lib/parse_conf to be URES and move it all
 into lib/parse_conf.c -- this responds to bug #1042, but does
 not fix it. The fix is not to compile with FORTIFY_SOURCE.
kes Backport fix de-referencing a NULL pointer in the scanner from
 the trunk SVN. I don't think this was reported as a bug.

Beta release Version 2.2.8
09Jan08
kes Re-enable the new job code editing (%f).
08Jan08
kes Fix bsnprintf for float point numbers. I broke recently when
 parameterizing some variables.
03Jan08
kes Move Heartbeat documentation from Job to Director resource.
 This fixes bug #1033.
02Jan08
kes Fix existing switch drive SD code to call autochanger to release
 any old volume. This must be done to keep the autochanger from
 releasing subsequently newly reserved volumes in doing a close().
 This should possibly fix bugs #1032 and #1018.
kes Apply big backport of current SVN SD code that corrects a number
 of race conditions. This is a first step in fixing bug #1018.
29Dec07
ebl Fixes bug #1028 where "Selection Type" option was not usable
 with JobDefs.

Did you actually try that query? I did, and all it produced
was some hints about an upcoming announcement (plus of course
lots of *requests* for professional support). No actual
information.

[Bacula-users] Bacula and off-site storage of tapes

2008-01-27 Thread Tilman Schmidt
We have recently replaced a Windows-based backup server by a
Linux-based one and chosen Bacula as the new backup software.
With the old system we had a policy of monthly full backups
to tapes labeled with the name of the month, which would be
stored off-site and recycled after a year. Once a month our
tape jockey would go to the bank vault, deposit the newly
written monthly tape, and bring back the tape for the next
month.

Reading the Bacula documentation I come to the conclusion that
using Bacula that way is discouraged, and I should let Bacula
choose by itself which tape to use. But then we do not know
which tape to place into the bank vault and when, in order to
have a backup with a defined maximum age in case of a disaster.

What is the recommended way of handling this?

TIA
T.

I think the first post is very informative:

[Bacula-users] Bacula Status + professional services initiative

And a whois query for baculasystems.com is not that hard and will
bring you and the org. poster forward.

IHMO, just read the first link. It's a bit old, but kern have announced
some months ago that he will start something like that.

I think that we will have more informations in few days.

[Bacula-users] bacula-2.2.8 rpm release

2008-01-27 Thread Scott Barninger
Bacula-2.2 RPM Release Notes
27 January 2008
D. Scott Barninger

Release 2.2.8-1

This release incorporates a number of significant changes since 1.38.

These release notes refer to the rpm packaging only.
Please refer to the release notes and changelog in the
tarball or on sourceforge for complete information on all changes.

*
* Miscellaneous *
*

Force stripping of binaries for SuSE packages.

Fixed bug 1037.

Added nobuild_mtx switch to surpress build of mtx package.

Added missing files now required by the rescue configure script.

Corrected dist target for rhel5.

Corrected QT dependency name for RedHat flavors.

Added fix for RHEL5 64 bit QT paths.

Added build target for su103.

Added build targets for rhel5 and clones.

Build target added for Scientific Linux (RHEL clone) thanks to Jon
Peatfield.

Merged Otto Mueller's patch changing some directory locations for FHS
compatibility
but retaining the script directory as /etc/bacula.

gnome-console and wxconsole have been renamed to bgnome-console and
bwx-console
respectively.

***
* bat (Bacula Admin Tool) *
***

A new subpackage has been added for the new bat QT-based GUI
administration tool.
This requires QT >= 4.2

--define "build_bat 1"

If you encounter problems building the bat package on platforms where
you do have the proper QT4 support (QT >= 4.2) it may be necessary to
adjust your $QTDIR and $PATH variables. On Fedora 8 it was necessary to:

export QTDIR=/usr/lib/qt4;export PATH=/usr/lib/qt4/bin:$PATH;rpmbuild
blah...

***
* Gnome console dropped on some platforms *
***

The gconsole package has been dropped on older gnome platforms (gtk+ <
2.4).
Changes in the gnome api and code produced by Glade no longer build.
In addition, the tray monitor now fails to build on < 2.10 platforms.
gconsole is now not built on the following platforms:
rh7, rh8, rh9, rhel3 (and clones), fc1, fc3, fc4, mdk, su9, su10

* Third party packager support *

A new build tag added to support third party packagers to replace the
information in the Packager: tag in the rpm. Invoking
--define "contrib_packager Your Name <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>"
will substitute your packager identification.

Users interested in building packages for platforms not normally
published
should examine the platforms/contrib-rpm directory in the source code.

***
* Option to build client only *
***

A build define to build the client rpm package only added. This turns
off all database builds, gnome console and wxconsole.
--define "build_client_only 1"

* Python support added *

Support for compiling with python scripting support added. This is off
by default but can be enabled with:
--define "build_python 1"
Released binary packages are built with python support.

***
* Database update *
***

The 2.x release requires an update to the bacula database structure
from version 9 to version 10. A pre-install routine has been added to
check for databases older than 9. In that event the install will exit
with an error message indicating that the database must be updated to
version 9 before installing this upgrade. Scripts for updating older
database formats are available for download in the bacula-updatedb
rpm package. In the event a version 9 database is detected a
post-install
routine will update the database after creating a backup file in the
bacula working directory.

**
* SQLite Upgrade *
**

For users of the sqlite package, from 2.2.7 onward sqlite3 replaces
sqlite2. Your sqlite2 database file (/var/lib/bacula/bacula.db) is not
compatible with sqlite3. During an upgrade the pre-install script will
check for this situation. If found it will dump your catalog data to
the
file /var/lib/bacula/bacula_backup.sql, rename your old catalog file to
/var/lib/bacula/bacula.db.old, and exit. You should then re-run the rpm
upgrade. After the upgrade is complete restore your catalog data with
the following commands (as root):

/etc/bacula/drop_sqlite3_tables
cd /var/lib/bacula
/usr/lib/bacula/sqlite/sqlite3 $* bacula.db < bacula_backup.sql
chown bacula.bacula bacula.db

**
* Platform Notes *
**

The spec file currently supports building on the following platforms:

# RedHat builds
--define "build_rh7 1"
--define "build_rh8 1"
--define "build_rh9 1"

# Fedora Core build
--define "build_fc1 1"

[Bacula-users] Using storage in pool as available?

2008-01-27 Thread Jason Antman
Hi,

I have a small Bacula setup at home that's been running for a few
months. I'm currently in college, and only home every other weekend (not
this weekend). I do most of my backups to disk and only the important
stuff to tape. I have two tape drives, both loaded with tape, figuring
that when one tape fills up and I'm not home to change it, I can backup
to the other drive.

This morning, I was greeted with warnings that my tape had filled up.
Looking in bacula-web, I confirm this:

pool-tape
Vol Name   Status
stor1-dds-AFull
stor1-dlt-2Append

>From bacula-dir.conf:
Storage {
  Name = STOR1-sd-st0
  Password = ***
  Address = STOR1.jasonantman.com
  SDPort = 9103
  Device = dev-STOR1-st0
  Media Type = DDS-4
}
Storage {
  Name = STOR1-sd-st1
  Password = ***
  Address = STOR1.jasonantman.com
  SDPort = 9103
  Device = dev-STOR1-st1
  Media Type = DLT7000
}

JobDefs {
  Name = Default1-Weekly-Tape
  Type = Backup
  Level = Full
  Schedule = WeeklyTapeSchedule
  Storage = STOR1-sd-st0
  Storage = STOR1-sd-st1
  Pool = pool-tape
  Messages = Daemon
  Priority = 15
}

from bconsole:

Pool: pool-tape
+-+-+---+-++--+--+-+--+---+---+-+
| MediaId | VolumeName  | VolStatus | Enabled | VolBytes   |
VolFiles | VolRetention | Recycle | Slot | InChanger | MediaType |
LastWritten |
+-+-+---+-++--+--+-+--+---+---+-+
|  15 | stor1-dds-A | Full  |   1 | 22,973,690,880 |
66 |2,592,000 |   1 |0 | 0 | DDS-4 | 2008-01-27
03:09:06 |
|  16 | stor1-dlt-2 | Append|   1 |  0 |
0 |2,592,000 |   1 |0 | 0 | DLT7000   | -00-00
00:00:00 |
+-+-+---+-++--+--+-+--+---+---+-+

For jobdefs, given that I've defined:
  Storage = STOR1-sd-st0
  Storage = STOR1-sd-st1
is there a way to force bacula to move to STOR1-sd-st1 when STOR1-sd-st0
is full?

Thanks,
Jason

Yes, I am in the process of founding a professional support company that will
work hand in hand with the Bacula project. I have discussed this a good
number of times over the last year and a half, and I on at least one occasion
invited Bacula users to participate in this company -- in the end, if I
remember right, I got two or three responses.

I have been hoping to official announce it when the company was actually
created and when we had a minimal web site operational. However, as is often
the case with these kinds of endeavors, it is taking longer than I expected.

So if you are interested come to the Salon Solutions Linux in Paris.
Unfortunately due to family commitments I will probably not be able to attend
personally ...

Best regards,

Kern

I seem to recall discussion about a new feature/directive to address this.
Did any code come out of it? I just went through the Job and Schedule resource
for 2.2.8 and didn't see anything.

[Bacula-users] Problem with either drivers

2008-01-27 Thread Glen Vickers
Hello all.

I'm new to the list and having some issues with getting this backup tape
system running. I decided to use bacula because it has a GUI form on webmin
making it easier to remotely manage.

When at console I'm running a test to see if I can't get this thing to run.

/sbin/btape -c /etc/bacula/bacula-sd.conf /dev/nst0

Tape block granularity is 1024 bytes.

btape: butil.c:285 Using device: "/dev/nst0" for writing.

27-Jan 15:48 btape: Fatal Error at device.c:296 because:

dev open failed: dev.c:433 Unable to open device "DDS-4" (/dev/nst0):
ERR=Device or resource busy

27-Jan 15:48 btape JobId 0: Fatal error: butil.c:194 Cannot open "DDS-4"
(/dev/nst0)

I'm assuming it is probably a driver problem but I'm not sure. When I did
the straight write test and mounting of the tape drive.. I didn't get any
errors. Anyone point me in the right direction to get this resolved?

Well, that's what I prefer, and what Bacula does best IMO.

This can be resolved rather easily... of course, there are many
approches. I prefer to do it like this:

- Define a pool for full backups (in your case, for the monthly fulls
to go to the vault).
- After the scheduled jobs run, make sure all the volumes just used
are no longer appendable. This can be achieved by setting a limited
volume use time and forcing Bacula to consider the pool in questio n
when looking for usable volumes, by using the bconsole command 'update
volume', or accessong the catalog database directly. Basically, what
I'm usually doing is using a script that looks for volumes loaded in
the autochanger, which were used recently, and are in status "Append"
and set those to "Used".
- Then, just unload all the volumes from that pool and store them safely.

Loading the next usable volumes is rather straightforward done
manually... Just select the next set uf tapes, and load them to the
autochanger. If you've ensured the retention periods are set up
correctly (i.e., less than a year - 11 months should be ok) the
volumes usable will automatically be chosen when the next jobs are
running.

The most important thing, in my opinion, is not to rely on volume
names but rather to use Baculas front-end to select which volumes to use.

Choosing the volumes to load would then only require a catalog query
which prints the volume names of the volumes from the relavnt pool
which were written to 11 months or more ago, or, more useful, the ones
that will be out of their retention time at the next backup runs.

I hope this makes sense...

> What is the recommended way of handling this?

Finding the fitting setup of retention times and - if necessary - a
small SQL query is what I do.

Re: [Bacula-users] help please

2008-01-27 Thread Pierre-Olivier Verschoore
Hi,

in the dir conf file, you did not replace "
" by the needed values in the beforejob run command. You
shoud enter the values (bacula catalog database name, user and pass)
then it will work.

Pierre-Olivier.
