I note that deleted/renamed file tracking is no longer shown on the sf.net bacula projects document: http://bacula.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/bacula/trunk/bacula/projects?view=markup Is it complete? I haven't seen anything about it on the site, ML, or in the ChangeLog in current SVN. The FAQ still says deleted files aren't tracked. Also: Item 14 ("Add an override in Schedule for Pools based on backup types") is actually covered now by the FullPool=, IncrementalPool= and DifferentialPool= directives in the schedule, since pools may specify storage devices using the Storage directive. It's a bit roundabout, but since in general when a backup is upgraded you want its retention periods etc to be upgraded too, it probably makes more sense. Item 25 can already be done with scripting, and Item 24 can already be done by splitting the fileset up appropriately and using multiple concurrent jobs on the same fd. -- Craig Ringer -- Apps built with the Adobe(R) Flex(R) framework and Flex Builder(TM) are powering Web 2.0 with engaging, cross-platform capabilities. [Bacula-users] restoring big files spanning multiple volumes?
Hi all, I have a setup where I backup some files into a "File" storage (i.e. not on tape). I have set the maximum volume size to something around 2 GB to avoid some problems when transfering them later via FTP, storing them on other file systems etc. One of the files to be backuped has around 3.5 GB. In all my backups this file (obviously) spans two volumes. The problem: this large file can not be restored. Using the "restore" command in the bacula console results in this: * restore ... Start Restore Job 1und1big-restore.2009-03-18_13.02.08 Using Device "1und1big" Ready to read from volume "1und1big-0146" on device "1und1big" (/var/backup/1und1big). This is very likely no hardware defect on my hard disk because this happens with ALL backups I've ever made. I've even tried to use bscan to update the catalog, but this did not change anything - the error messages during "restore" and "bextract" are the same. Any ideas how to restore this file? This is a kind of desaster situation because at the moment I NEED this backup. So of course it would be nice to know how to avoid this problem for future backups. But I would also be lucky about a way how to completely restore this file (I guess all relevant data is available in the backups files, but the restore process does not handle it well). I infer from your disk space limitations that you're backing up to hard disk, but there's nothing in this config to tell Bacula when it should change volumes. No job limit, space limit, time limit, etc. So I'm guessing that Bacula is writing all your jobs to a single volume, which is always appendable because you haven't limited it otherwise. If this is all true, take a look at the "Automated Disk Backup" section of the manual. It has a perfect example of how to do this right. If this is all inaccurate, reply with more details (including your full config files). -HKS -- Apps built with the Adobe(R) Flex(R) framework and Flex Builder(TM) are powering Web 2.0 with engaging, cross-platform capabilities. I am not sure a corrupted volume is > recoverable, especially one with compression on. Maybe the volume got corrupted. But even if I try to restore an older backup the same happens. I do a full backup once a week and an daily incremental backup. The database dump file in question will be backed up every day by the incremental backup. None of those backups for the last 30 days works. > > But I would also be lucky about a way how to completely restore > > this file (I guess all relevant data is available in the backups files, > > but the restore process does not handle it well). > > > > Any help possible? > > Thanks and regards > > > Do you have a bootstrap file for the job? And not concurrent jobs. At least I did not modify any default behaviour, so "grep -i concurrent /etc/bacula/bacula*.conf" results in no output. I guess the default behaviour is to run only one single job. But maybe one can explain what exactly those error messages mean? Especially I am interested in the fact that the error message "Block checksum mismatch in block=5105 len=64512..." prints two different values for "block" - block=48729 when doing restore from the bacula console, block=5105 when using bextract... Maybe it is also interesting, that the checksum error occurs on the FIRST volume (-0146) when using bextract, but on the SECOND volume (-0147) when using the bacula console (at least this is my interpretation of the error messages). A question about this one: "Error: attribs.c:421 File size of restored file ./var/lib/postgresql/backup/database.dump not correct. Original 3682990713, restored 309133312.". Why not all data has been restored? Is it because the restore process has been canceled because of the previous checksum error? Or is there not enough data to restore everything? Apart from a few old postings on this list concerning tapes there seems to be no indicator as why this happens with file based storage. Is there any explanation excluding faulty hardware? 18-Mär 13:47 db-backup-smedia-dir JobId 43810: Start Restore Job RestoreFiles.2009-03-18_13.47.06 18-Mär 13:47 db-backup-smedia-dir JobId 43810: Using Device "FileStorage" 18-Mär 13:47 db-backup-smedia-sd JobId 43810: Ready to read from volume "archiv-data6445" on device "FileStorage" (/mnt/backup/store). 18-Mär 13:47 db-backup-smedia-sd JobId 43810: Forward spacing Volume "archiv-data6445" to file:block 0:225. 18-Mär 13:56 db-backup-smedia-sd JobId 43810: End of Volume at file 2 on device "FileStorage" (/mnt/backup/store), Volume "archiv-data6445" 18-Mär 13:56 db-backup-smedia-sd JobId 43810: Ready to read from volume "data-inc1709" on device "FileStorage" (/mnt/backup/store). 18-Mär 13:56 db-backup-smedia-sd JobId 43810: Forward spacing Volume "data-inc1709" to file:block 0:219. 18-Mär 13:56 db-backup-smedia-sd JobId 43810: End of Volume at file 0 on device "FileStorage" (/mnt/backup/store), Volume "data-inc1709" 18-Mär 13:56 db-backup-smedia-sd JobId 43810: Ready to read from volume "data-inc1756" on device "FileStorage" (/mnt/backup/store). 18-Mär 13:56 db-backup-smedia-sd JobId 43810: Forward spacing Volume "data-inc1756" to file:block 0:1290450. 18-Mär 13:56 db-backup-smedia-sd JobId 43810: Error: block.c:275 Volume data error at 0:1290450! [Bacula-users] btape fill test fails ioctl MTWEOF and final unload
OpenBSD 4.4, Bacula 2.2.8, Dell Powervault 124T autochanger. In the continuing saga of making my autochanger work with Bacula, I've finally got my mtx-changer script squared away (coming soon) and both drive and autochanger tests work fine. The last obstacles in my way right now are a pair of errors when I run the "fill" test on multiple tapes. First is the ioctl MTWEOF error after all the data is written to the first tape: 17-Mar 15:06 btape JobId 0: Error: block.c:569 Write error at 617:14776 on device "124T-Drive" (/dev/nrst0). ERR=Input/output error. 17-Mar 15:06 btape JobId 0: Error: Error writing final EOF to tape. This Volume may not be readable. dev.c:1669 ioctl MTWEOF error on "124T-Drive" (/dev/nrst0). ERR=Input/output error. Even though this fails, the read-back works fine: 15:10:55 Done filling tapes at 0:13. Now beginning re-read of first tape ... The last block of the first tape matches. I've update firmware, cleaned the drive, and tested multiple tapes. Since it seems to be working anyhow, is this something to even be concerned about? The second error is when it tries to unload the first tape to read the second (ignore the slot # weirdness): 17-Mar 16:43 btape JobId 0: 3307 Issuing autochanger "unload slot 13, drive 0" command. 17-Mar 16:43 btape JobId 0: 3995 Bad autochanger "unload slot 13, drive 0": ERR=Child died from signal 9: Kill, unblockable Results=Program killed by Bacula watchdog (timeout) I can't figure out why this is being killed, and so quickly. This is the /only/ unload that is failing in these tests - there are at least two others in the "fill" test that work correctly, and the autochanger test works flawlessly. According to my debug log, the script is killed while (or perhaps immediately after?) trying to take the drive offline (mt offline). Why would this be timing out in less than a minute? "Maximum Changer Wait Time" is set to 300. Is there another timeout value that needs to be set? Or does this need to be set on the Autochanger resource? [Bacula-users] Fix limit file size limit for files to backup?
Hi, I have been using bacula for quite a bit now and am wondering if it is possible to fix a limit for the files to backup, e.g saying every file above 100 Mb, for example, should not be saved. [Bacula-users] Bacula BETA 2.5.42-b2 released to Source Forge
Hello, We have just released Bacula BETA version 2.5.42-b2 to the bacula download of Source Forge. It includes the source tar file, the Win32 binaries, and new Win64 binaries. One major point to be aware of is that you must run upgrade scripts to upgrade your catalog -- see the release notes below. We expect this to be the last beta release before the official release, which we are targetting for sometime between the end of March and mid-April. This is the first release of the Win64 binaries. Having 64 bit binaries are required for VSS to work on 64 bit Windows machines. Since it is the first release, we would appreciate feedback (even if everything goes fine). If you have installed a previous win64 test version or a 32 bit version, we recommend that you deinstall them before installing the 64 bit version. Please don't try to install the 64 bit binaries on a 32 bit Win OS. Finally, for the moment, there is a bug in the NSIS installer version we are using such that for 64 bits it proposes to install in "c:/program files (x86)". You might want to change this to be "c:/program files". Note, that with this version (unlike the 32 bit version) everything is installed in that one directory rather than the multiple diverse directories as with the old 32 bit installer. As most of you know, the Rescue CDROM is pretty much dead. My original idea was to build it from the kernel and data on your system, but in the end, this was just too much work, because every distro does booting different, and even within a single distro the boot procedures change over time. However, I have now started remastering the Kubuntu livecd onto a USB key, and it looks really promising. It has the advantage that it uses a single OS that already works, knows how to detect most hardware, and can be relatively easily remastered (add/remove packages, apply updates, or upgrade, ...). In addition, the USB key is written so that changes to the OS and your home directory are rewritten dynamically to the key -- giving it a persistence. This USB rescue key is still under development, but can now be tested. Simply download the rescue tar file and look in the linux/usb directory where you will find a README on how to make such a key. Our documentation is still lagging a bit behind the development, so please be patient. Finally, the documentation is posted on the web site, but is not uploaded because Source Forge upload is very unreliable lately. Best regards, Kern Release Notes for Bacula 2.5.42 Bacula code: Total files = 521 Total lines = 204,881 (*.h *.c *.in) The diff between 2.4.4 and 2.5.x is 208,340 lines, so this release represents an enormous effort. This Director and Storage daemon must be upgraded at the same time, but they should be compatible with all 2.4.x File daemons, unless you use some of the new features that affect the FD. In other words, you should not have to upgrade all your File daemons when you upgrade. However, any release of version 2.5.40 or greater requires a database upgrade. == Warning !! == New Catalog format in version 2.5.40 This BETA release of Bacula uses a new catalog format. We provide a set of scripts that permit to convert a 2.4.x (version 10) catalog to 2.5.x (version 11). If you are using already a 2.5 version, you can drop the JobHistory table before upgrading your catalog (if you are using the new "long term statistics" module, you can upgrade this table the same way we do with the Job table, see the src/cats/update_bacula_tables script). The simplest way to: 1. Stop any current version of Bacula from running. 2. Save a copy of your existing database. 3. Configure, build, and install the 2.5.42 version of Bacula 4. cd 5. ./update_bacula_tables 6. If you have multiple catalogs, edit the update_bacula_tables script and put the name of another database, and then execute the script again. Repeat this until all Bacula catalogs have been updated. 7. Start the new Bacula. If everything worked, it should not print any error messages. The upgrade operation will convert the FileId index field of the File table from 32 bits to 64 bits. This operation will take TIME and will *temporarily* DOUBLE THE SIZE of your catalog. Bacula must be shutdown during this update, so, won't be able to run jobs during this period. For example, a 3 million files catalog will take 2 mins to upgrade on a normal machine. Don't forget to backup it before executing the script. If you start from scratch, you don't need to run the update_bacula_tables script. However, if you are using a version of Bacula older than 2.5.40, then you need to run the update_bacula_tables script that will be found in the /src/cats directory after you run the ./configure command. As mentioned above, before running this script, please backup your catalog database, and when you do running it, be sure

It is somewhat unlikely, because compression is done by the FD but the checksums are computed (and checked) by the SD. Each Bacula block contains a checksum of the other bytes in the block, computed just before the block is written to the media. Yes, it is strange, because restore and bextract use the same code to read the blocks. Does restore always get the same block and incorrect checksum for that job? Likewise for bextract? Does bls -j also give errors? What about bls -k? > A question about this one: "Error: attribs.c:421 File size of restored > file ./var/lib/postgresql/backup/database.dump not correct. [Bacula-users] Issue with Restoring a Full which Spanned Tapes.
Dear List, I am having issue with restoring a backup which was done over the weekend and I can't find any of the files that I need in the database. I have checked on some of the files that I do have and it looks as though only files done on the incremental since the full are available to select to restore. The last full was done accost 2 tapes and I can't find any of the files listed to restore. It isn't even showing them in the database from previous backups. It is like when inserting attributes the database said ok good and then when it was done it throughout the whole backup job. I realize that I am also running an older version of bacula and if this has been resolved since then let me know the minimum I need to update it too. Here are my specs. Server-dir Version: 2.2.8 (26 January 2008) i686-redhat-linux-gnu redhat Client-fd Version: 2.0.3 (06 March 2007) i686-redhat-linux-gnu redhat Enterprise release postgresql-libs-8.1.4-1.1 postgresql-server-8.1.4-1.1 bacula-postgresql-2.2.8-2 postgresql-8.1.4-1.1 The Database has worked in the past but I don't know what could be the issue. -- Apps built with the Adobe(R) Flex(R) framework and Flex Builder(TM) are powering Web 2.0 with engaging, cross-platform capabilities. One of our servers is hosted in a data center, and we do backups by uploading data to storage provided by the data center provider. That storage is in turn backed up by them and taken off site, and is really only for 'total loss' recovery. Currently I just back up to disk and then upload the most recent backup file to the data center storage, but being able to back up directly via FTP would be nifty.
