Re: [Bacula-users] bacula 5.0.1 installation errors

2010-03-02 Thread Marc Schiffbauer

Hi Jerry,

this is a known issue on F12 because they use the beta of openssl
1.0 which had some incompatible API-changes.

AFAIK there is work going on to fix this. Until a fix is released
you might want to disable SSL or use some 0.9.x version of
SSL or use another distro(-version) which has version 0.9.x of
OpenSSL

[Bacula-users] log file ownership

2010-03-02 Thread coryc

It seems I created this problem by adding bacula's log to the list of logs
monitored by webmin. After removing the log from webmin's list last week, I
have not encountered the problem again. Obviously, I didn't fully understand
webmin's system log module and made the mistake of assuming it was a quick way
to read a log. Lesson learned the hard way.

That's MySQL complaining about not finding table files. Check its
configuration for the value of "open_files_limit". Increase the value
if it's small. If it looks large enough, check your system
configuration for restrictions on the number of open files.

Note that MySQL under Windows before 6.x can only handle 2048 open
files, period, as that's the limit of its POSIX implementation (6.x uses
native Windows API's to increase that limit).

[Bacula-users] How many jobs can I schedule for the same time?

2010-03-02 Thread Richard Hartmann
Hi all,

how many backups can I start at once without causing errors?
Even with "only" 15 backups starting at once, I get one of the two
failures below:

Fatal error: sql_create.c:784 Lock Path table Query failed: LOCK
TABLES Path write, batch write, Path as p write: ERR=Can't find file:
'./bacula/Path.frm' (errno: 13)
Fatal error: sql_create.c:801 Lock Filename table Query failed: LOCK
TABLES Filename write, batch write, Filename as f write: ERR=Can't
find file: './bacula/Filename.frm' (errno: 13)

I am 99% sure this is a load issue and the result of several backups
starting at once.

Alternatively, is there a way to start backups randomly (e.g. +/- 5 minutes
against the scheduled time)? I would want to avoid cluttering the config
with dozens of schedules, if possible.

Thanks,
Richard Hartmann

[Bacula-users] potential concurrency bug in SD?

2010-03-02 Thread Joseph Dickson
Greetings..

I believe I may be hitting a concurrency bug in the storage director code, but
I'm pretty new to Bacula and may just not understand what I'm looking at in the
trace output. The quick outline of my scenario is:

Bacula version 5.0
SD and DIR running on same box (CentOS 5.4, x86_64)
Completely file based backup, using a custom autochanger script (which does not
appear to be the problem, but I mention it because it may be relevant)

In my setup:

-  I have a single autochanger defined (changer0)

-  I have 10 drives of DeviceType=File defined for changer0

- Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 1 is set on each Device entry for each
drive

- Each drive shares the same media type, changer0_media

- I have three pools - OnSiteFull, OnSiteIncremental, and OnSiteScratch

I have 5 backup jobs that all start at the same time (1:30am), and which all
will want either OnSiteFull or OnSiteIncremental depending on the day.

The problem that I am seeing is that volumes are being incorrectly marked as
being in Error status each night. My storage director trace output can be
found at:  http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=Ne0XJbBh

One of the jobs in the trace output that marks a volume as in Error is job 36.
If someone more familiar with how volume selection works could take a peek and
give me some guidance I'd really appreciate it.. in looking through the trace
and trying to follow the code, it looks like there is a concurrency issue when
there is a volume which is wanted on a drive other than the one it is currently
loaded into.

Thanks,

Joe

[Bacula-users] Bacula to the Cloud

2010-03-02 Thread Peter Zenge
Hello, 2 year Bacula user but first-time poster. I'm currently dumping about
1.6TB to LTO2 tapes every week and I'm looking to migrate to a new storage
medium.

The obvious answer, I think, is a direct-attached disk array (which I would be
able to put in a remote gigabit-attached datacenter before too long). However,
I'm wondering if anyone is currently doing large (or what seem to me to be
large) backups to the cloud in some way? Assuming I have a gigabit connection
to the Internet from my datacenter, I'm wondering how feasible it would be to
either use something like Amazon S3 with s3fs (I'm guessing way too much
overhead to be efficient), or a bacula-SD implementation on an EC2 node, using
Elastic Block Store (EBS) as "local" disk, and VPN (Amazon VPC) between my
datacenter and the SD.

Substitute your favorite cloud provider for Amazon above; I don't use any right
now so not tied to any particular provider. It just seems like Amazon has all
the necessary pieces today.

To do this, and keep customers comfortable with the idea of data in the cloud,
we would need to encrypt, so I'm also wondering if it would be possible for the
SD to encrypt the backup volume, rather than the FD encrypt the data before
sending it to SD (which is what we do now)? Easier to manage if we just
handled encryption in one place for all clients.

I would love to hear what other people are either doing with Bacula and the
cloud, or why you have decided not to.

Thanks

[Bacula-users] Exchange Plugin

2010-03-02 Thread skipunk

I've been reading throughout the forums and on the internet and have some
issues with the exchange plugin. Perhaps someone could shed some light on the
issue.

Exchange server specs:
 Windows Server 2006 x64
 Exchange 2007 sp2 x64

I can backup files fine.
when i run the estimate on bconsole, this comes up.

"Plugin: "exchange:/@EXCHANGE/Microsoft Information Store" not found.

then proceeds to give me the estimated files and backup size.

Backup jobs seem to be ok as far as I can tell.

[Bacula-users] Exchange Plugin

2010-03-02 Thread gdurham

A fix for this is on your windows server 2008 server navigate to c:/program
files/bacula/ (or wherever you installed bacula)
look for a folder called plugins
look for a file named bacula-fd.conf
open with wordpad or notepad
in the filedaemon section look for a line that looks like this:
Plugin Directory = "c:\\program files\\Bacula\\plugins" (where this corresponds
to your setup.)
If it is not there create it. Also check that it is not commented out. If it
is, remove the hash (#) from in front of it.
then go and restart the service.

Thanks,
Greg

vxa_packetloader is not related to the delay. That changes the string that is
parsed to determine what tapes are loaded in the changer.

I have not but it is probably a good idea as Packetloaders can delay for a
very long time if they detect an error and need to take corrective measures
automatically.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest afio instead of tar.
afio rather than cpio because it does the same job (reading and writing
cpio archives) with much less CPU load than traditional cpio, and either
rather than tar because in the event of a damaged archive, recovering
files from after the point of damage is (in my experience) easier and
more reliable with a cpio archive than it is with a tar archive.

[Bacula-users] bacula 5.0.1 installation errors

2010-03-02 Thread Jerry Lowry
Hi, I am trying to install bacula 5.0.1 on a new backup server. I have
attached the error that I am getting during the make and the
config.out.  The server configuration is:

fedora 12 x86_64
mysql 5.1.42
bacula src 5.0.1

Any ideas as to why this is failing? Also, if I include 'enable-bat'
after installing depkgs-qt and sourcing the qt directories the bacula
configure does not see that qt is installed.

Ok, I'm running a backup of the raw device now and it's nice and zippy
now, I've already backed up 6GB in the last couple of minutes.
Awesome! Now I suppose I just need a script that can unmount the
partition before bacula runs.

Has anyone tried this with an LVM snapshot? I'm thinking that if I
could snapshot the partition that I might not need to have it
unmounted while backing up...

just out of curiosity: did you ever tried to fsck your filesystem where
backuppc has it's data? heard that fsck gets upset if there are too many
hardlinks.

Re: [Bacula-users] Exabyte Storageloader

2010-03-02 Thread David Koski
I think the 172/320 should work the same as VXA-2. I have done some single
tape backups and restores with success but did not try btape with single
tapes. The multitape backup is the big issue. I am using bacula because BRU
would not work and BackupExec is not supported on this unit as it is
firewire.

I am preparing for a multitape real test with 30 1G files.

do you write the new tape labels on the tape every time you put the new
one in it? or how do you read the tape label "manually"?

you could use "Day-" as label Format. Bacula will then append a number to
it. or label them once manually.

be sure to set Retention times on the pool (e.g. for your schedule maybe
18 days) and and a use duration (maybe 1 day as you change it on a daily
basis).

Actually there's only one instance of BackupPC. We have one BackupPC
server, and about 200 clients. It is an agent-less backup system that
uses rsync to transfer files.

Well, actually I have several large storage devices to copy to tape.
This is just the first one I picked for testing. There is another
partition that also has several million files on it, however not so
many hard links as we have with the BackupPC partition.

Indeed! I ran our test backup for a few hours today and barely got
two gigabytes onto tape before giving up.

Yes, this is exactly what the folks on the backuppc mailing list said as well.

It's CentOS 5 with an HP d2d4112 storage device, using fiber channel
connectivity. The device emulates an LTO-4 tape drive with a tape
changer.

The next thing I'm going to try and to is see if I can simply tar the
entire raw partition onto tape. Does bacula support this type of
backup?

As mentioned in other posts: Its only in Bacula 5. And its not
(yet?) hash based, which would be very good indeed.

Re: [Bacula-users] Exabyte Storageloader

2010-03-02 Thread David Koski
Thank you Brian. That is almost what I have with the following differences:

AutomaticMount not set, default not defined in doc for version 2.4.
Drive Index not set but default works correctly.
AutoSelect not set but default is same as yours.
Maxmimum Changer Wait is higher on mine (30 minutes)

I think the differences should not matter and btape actually indicates multiple
tape backups work. However, there is an error in the log generated during the
multiple tape backup:

28-Feb 17:33 btape JobId 0: Error: block.c:568 Write error at 26:15457 on
device "Exabyte_VXA-2" (/dev/nst0). ERR=Input/output error.
28-Feb 17:33 btape JobId 0: Error: Backspace file at EOT failed.
ERR=Input/output error

Still, the backup appears to work:

17:37:30 Done filling tapes at 0:13. Now beginning re-read of first tape ...
28-Feb 17:37 btape JobId 0: 3307 Issuing autochanger "unload slot 2, drive 0"

28-Feb 17:39 btape JobId 0: 3305 Autochanger "load slot 1, drive 0", status is
OK.
28-Feb 17:40 btape JobId 0: Ready to read from volume "TestVolume1" on device
"Exabyte_VXA-2" (/dev/nst0).
Rewinding.
Reading the first 1 records from 0:0.
1 records read now at 1:5084
Reposition from 1:5084 to 26:15456
Reading block 15456.

The last block of the first tape matches.

28-Feb 17:55 btape JobId 0: 3307 Issuing autochanger "unload slot 1, drive 0"
command.
28-Feb 17:57 btape JobId 0: 3304 Issuing autochanger "load slot 2, drive 0"
command.
28-Feb 17:57 btape JobId 0: 3305 Autochanger "load slot 2, drive 0", status is
OK.
28-Feb 17:58 btape JobId 0: Ready to read from volume "TestVolume2" on device
"Exabyte_VXA-2" (/dev/nst0).
Reposition from 0:0 to 0:1
Reading block 1.

The first block on the second tape matches.

Reposition from 0:2 to 0:11
Reading block 11.

The last block on the second tape matches. Test succeeded.

I ran a test backup with real files, the largest which was over 7G. The
restore failed with an out of memory error.

I believe you are correct. I posed some of the same questions and did
not receive an answer. As far as I understand, the flags/attributes
which will achieve file deduplication are configurable (and share the
same characters/meaning as Verify/Accurate backup jobs), but the file
path is a hidden requirement. So, yes, if you move the file to another
folder which does not exactly match the path in the Base job, it will
not be deduplicated. Permissions, however, can be ignored.

The options for which Bacula will consider a file for deduplication are
the same listed under verify= in the fileset resource
documentation here:
http://www.bacula.org/en/dev-manual/Configuring_Director.html#SECTION00147

If anyone who is familiar with how this stuff works on the low level,
I'd be particularly interested on a solid answer on whether the path
matching with the Base job can be disabled or worked around.

There are few reasons for our current configuration:

1. BackupPC has a web GUI that allows you to quickly restore files
that were accidentally deleted. 99% of the time this is all that is
required. For example, a user might have accidentally deleted a
directory that they need. With BackupPC I can restore the files, or
even give the end-user the ability to do this themselves.

2. BackupPC does compression and file pooling. If we were to try and
backup these same systems without compression and pooling we would
need over 8 terabytes of disk space. Our current system uses only 1.2
terabytes.

3. BackupPC is not well suited to tape backups. Hence the decision
to augment our current system with bacula.

Another BackupPC user I contacted suggested that we unmount the entire
partition and do a block-level backup. Would this be possible with
bacula?

I confess my first reaction is that any time your answer involves two
different backup systems working in series, you probably asked the wrong
question in the first place. If you're just copying all this data to
tape for an offsite archive copy (which, one presumes, you're going to
date and periodically rotate), why don't you just dump it with, say,
cpio/afio?

[Bacula-users] Copying huge number of files - very slow

2010-03-02 Thread Sean Carolan
Hello bacula users:

We have a server that uses BackupPC to handle network-based backups of
a couple hundred hosts on our network. If you're not familiar with
BackupPC, it uses rsync and a clever pooling technique to optimize
storage space. The downside of this is that you can end up with
millions of obscure files in the backup partition and tons of hard
links pointing to the various files. Currently our backup partition
has around 1.2 terabytes of data on it.

I'd like to use bacula to copy this data to tapes for off-site
storage. We have an HP d2d device that gets speeds from 30-60
megabytes per second during testing with btape.  When I try to run a
bacula job for our backuppc partition however I only get around 25MB
per *minute*.  At this rate it will take days to back up the entire
partition.

Any suggestions on how we might speed this up?

Thanks

Sean

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula and deduplication

2010-03-02 Thread Beck J Mr
I think it's only available in V5.0.x. Even then, it's in it's infancy and, as
far as I can tell, doesn't work like all other deduplication methods I have
seen; where all files that have the same hash value are deduplicated. I believe
this is not the case with Bacula's deduplication.

As far as I understand it, deduplication only occurs on files from the same
client as the "Base Job". Then, if a file is altered in any way (file
permission, moved to another folder etc) deduplication isn't effective and the
file is backed up again.

Also, the Bacula docs say that using base jobs currently makes restoration very
difficult!

Please, somebody correct me if I am wrong here. Dedup is something I am
interested in if it works in the right way.

[Bacula-users] Storage definition precedence

2010-03-02 Thread Ferdinando Pasqualetti
Hello List,
I thought that the order for determining which storage is to be used in a
job shoulb be:
what defined in the POOL definition (essential for migrating a job in the
pool)
superseded by what defined in the JOB definition (optional)
superseded by what defined in the SCHEDULE definition (optional)

And as far I noticed this was the behaviour before rev. 3. I am running
3.0.3 now and it appears that the storage definition in the pool takes the
last word.
Can someone confirm that?
It seems useless to run the same pool on more than one storage, but I need
to use one drive in a two drive tape storage outside bacula, in certain
periods, so I defined one storage for each drive and I should be able to
use the one I need.

Any suggestion welcome, thanks.

It easyer to know wich tape I need if the volume name include the date and

No sure if you solved this yet, but did /etc/group contain that entry when you
started bacula-sd?

Does "procstat -s 70980" show 5 (i.e. operator) in the groups list for the
bacula-sd process?

why do you wan't to create time based names for your tape volumes and why
not just enumerate and use volume recycling? this would be the standard
with tapes.

[Bacula-users] bscan doesn't restore files entities

2010-03-02 Thread Vladimir Vassiliev
I used bscan after accidentially purging catalog.
But it seems information about files didn't restore. Is this right?
Here tail of very long bscan's output.
Can someone comment it? Does it look good?

Thanks.

Re: [Bacula-users] Pool with AutoPrune=no

2010-03-02 Thread gnowar

I guess you should set up a volume retention in your pool and set both
Recycle and Autoprune to yes.

When the value of your Volume retention is reached, it is automatically
purged in your catalog. Then your volume can be recycled.

If anyone can confirm ?

IMHO these don't seem to be "error" messages. it tries to delete a column
but it doesn't exist. it tries to create new tables, but they already
exist. tries to create a new index, but it already exists.

maybe you ran it twice?

i would say: all is fine.

Re: [Bacula-users] Backup two clients to same tape...

2010-03-02 Thread gnowar

You just need to create 2 Jobs for your clients :

Job {
  Name = "BackupClient1OnTape"
  Client = Client1
  Pool = YourPool
  FileSet = "Client1FileSet"
  Schedule = "YourSched"
  JobDefs = "DefaultJob"
  Storage = Tape
}

Job {
  Name = "BackupClient2OnTape"
  Client = Client2
  Pool = YourPool
  FileSet = "Client2FileSet"
  Schedule = "YourSched"
  JobDefs = "DefaultJob"
  Storage = Tape
}

What's the problem ?
