And why is that? Just because of the probability to make errors in
configuration?

If the reload is preceded by "bacula-dir -t", it wouldn't be a problem, would
it?

*  FD Bytes Written:   40,119,463,364 (40.11 GB)*
*  SD Bytes Written:   256,785,265 (256.7 MB) *

Nothing has been written to the FD. FD was being read during the backup
time only. And the amount shown as "SD Bytes Written" is what I would
expect this incremental backup to take. Now the question is why Bacula is
now showing this in the "list jobs" or "status client" commands?

Thanks for follow-up.

This means compression is on and is being used.

Although remember if you had compression off and then wrote anything
to a tape then tried to turn compression on that tape will not be
compressed because you can not toggle compression on or off after data
is written to a tape. You can recover with a rewind then weof. Then
the tape can be switched to use compression. mt -f status with the
tape loaded should tell you if compression is enabled on the tape.

If anybody let me know if these settings are correct then that will be very

It sounds like you have some large files which compress a lot.

I would take the output of 'list files jobid=' and write a script to
find the size of every file in the list to verify why it reaches 39GB.

[Bacula-users] Using one job config for multiple individual file backups?

2011-01-14 Thread Stan M. Hammond
I am looking to see if anyone has any ideas or even if it can be done.
We have a number of data files (3TB - over 12K files) that we want to
backup to tape. We are already performing tape backups using Bacula
without any problems. The 3TB backup is different because it will be a
one shot backup to tape for archiving. It would be easy to create a job
to run and backup this data which we have done before. However, the
data owner has cataloged this data within a database that he manages.
He would like to have a record in the database that tells him which tape
- based on the barcode - the data resides on. We have developed scripts
- one to specify the file to backup and then write the returned barcode
to the database (data owner's script) and one to initiate the backup (my
script). Since he needs to catalog a barcode for each file, his script
basically tells my script to create a new job configuration file for
each (yes, each) file it needs to backup. By the time this is done over
12K individual backup jobs would have been completed. It works except
for one problem: because the file to be backed up always changes, I have
my script rewrite the job configuration (see below) and then reload it
in bconsole. As I have read and experienced, repeated reloads of the
configuration will cause Bacula to error back with "Too many open reload
requests. Request ignored" and then in our case crash bacula-dir. I am
wondering if there is a way to perform this type of dynamic backup where
we can change the file being backed up in the job configuration without
crashing bacula-dir and without performing a bulk backup. Or if this
simply cannot be done and we have to just do a bulk/regular backup.

I am running Bacula 5.0.3 on 64-bit CentOS 5.5

Job {
   Name = "Archive1"
   Type = Backup
   JobDefs ="DefaultJob"
   Client = client.whrc.org-fd
   FileSet = "Data Archive 2010"
   Messages = Archival
   Pool = Tape_Archive
   Storage = SL48
}

FileSet {
   Name = "Data Archive 2010"
   Include {
 Options {
   signature = MD5
 }
### My script rewrites the following line for each directory passed to
it, then reloads the configuration in bconsole
 File = "/mnt/data/usb_disk_1/dir3/sub1/sub2/006/056"
   }
}

[Bacula-users] Quick Question on Windows 2003 backup to Debian Director

2011-01-14 Thread Duncan McQueen
We are backing up a Windows 2003 Small Business Server using Bacula
(5.0.2) with the Director and FD on a Debian Server. It is an
incremental backup. However, we have quite a few older files that just
keep on getting backed up although nothing is touching or changing those
files.

This is how I define the FileSet:

FileSet {

Name = "Windows Server"

Enable VSS = yes

Include {

Options {

 compression = GZIP

}

File = "C:/Apps"

File = "C:/Users"

File = "C:/System State Backup"

Plugin = "exchange:/@EXCHANGE/Microsoft Information Store"

}

}

Any suggestions to changes to try and eliminate the duplicate backups?

The tape device will attempt to compress the data. It will write to tape
either the compressed data or the original depending on which is the
smaller. Compressability is a function of the compression implementation
and the data being provided to the tape system. Some data can grow in
size after attempting to compress it.

It is difficult to know how well any particular data will compress. We
achieve about 30% compression on our LTO4 tape drive system using
hardware compression.

The reason I asked is that if you used software compression or
encryption and sent that data to the hardware compression this data
will most likely not be compressible a second time so the hardware
compression would have most likely stored the data instead of
compressing again.

Hi list,

I came in this morning and found that my director had died last night
after doing two of the backups. The traceback follows at the end.

This is the scenario:

I noticed yesterday that the only two jobs that were scheduled to
be performed last night were a monthly backup and the catalog backup.
Given that I did not have the time to research why the other 5 backups

Thanks for the reply.
I tried it and no longer works. I see that when I run:
  # mt-f / dev/nst0 compression 1
compression is enabled:
# tapeinfo-f / dev/sg5
...
DataCompEnabled: yes
...

But by launching the copy tape is uncompressed ...
Do not let the copy over 400 GB (800 GB compressed).

That page makes no mention of the plugin, so it is technically correct.

It talks about VSS, which is the stuff that does work.

Bacula Systems are working on a replacement plugin for their "Enterprise"

Therefore, I would say that currently, the best way to backup an Exchange
server is via the usual VSS stuff. Put the path to the Program Files / Exchange
directory in your fileset.
I have an email achiever - I was hoping to state in my network
documentation that bacula backing up exchange was providing some

Make sure that you test the restores before you start relying on it.

[Bacula-users] devices with bacula inside (was: compiling static)

Hello,

I'm interesting in make a list with all (o many) devices (NAS, disks
boxs, etc, etc) that have the possibility of install bacula (director
and/or storage) in him.

for example:
 - device with FreeNAS
 - Iomega Storcenter Ix2-200 Nas (Linux in a AMR with 128MB)
 - others and others.

In principle, we only make the list of devices (and some
characteristics), but, if we have a good acceptation, we can make
how-to to install bacula for which device too.

well.. anyone have any device with bacula ?? Wish shared this
information ??? Has conserved the "notes" of installation ??

I always test before reloading in the console.

bacula-dir -t /etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf

At this point if there is any errors in your config file bacula will tell you.

[Bacula-users] Best Practice to Backup Exchange Only?

2011-01-14 Thread Mister IT Guru
Is there a best practise on how to backup an exchange server? I have a
number of them, and I would like to be able to back them up in backups
that I know are only exchange data. I know there is the plugin from
Equiinet -- I am currently looking into that, but I'm pretty sure that
someone has already done this, and I don't really want to reinvent the
wheel. If it hasn't, I'm sure there are a few people on here who
wouldn't mind throwing in some suggestions. So ... let open source commence!

I prefer this method! It seems safer - Most of my backups run at night,
so I'll make the opportunities - Sometimes, the simple answer is the best

[Bacula-users] Possible to expand terminated jobs list

2011-01-14 Thread Caspar Smit
Hi all,

When I do a "status dir" in bconsole it prints the last 10 terminated jobs.
I'm doing 40+ backups daily so I would like to see more then the
default 10 jobs, is this possible?

For instance can I print all terminated jobs of a single day?

Kind regards,

Sorry - that is Bacula 5.0.3-1 re-compiled from sources on www.bacula.org.

Re: [Bacula-users] incremental backups too large

2011-01-14 Thread Bart Swedrowski
2011/1/13 Mark :
> Have you done a 'list files jobid=' for one of your incrementals?

Yeah, I tried that, too. It's only listing files that got changed/are
new and should be backed up. Although, total is still very high.

+---++-+--+---+--++---+
| jobid | name   | starttime   | type | level | jobfiles |
jobbytes   | jobstatus |
+---++-+--+---+--++---+
| 1,105 | tic FS | 2011-01-10 02:05:08 | B| I |4,585 |
39,502,153,253 | T |
+---++-+--+---+--++---+

Again, even though it's showing the jobbytes = over 39GB on disk it's
taking max 6GB. I can see how much space individual volumes are
taking.

The fileset I am using is as follows (although I can't really see how
that could affect things...):

FileSet {
Name= "tic FileSet"
Include {
Options {
accurate= mcs1
basejob = pmugcs1
checkfilechanges= yes
compression = GZIP
fstype  = ext2
noatime = yes
onefs   = no
signature   = SHA1
verify  = pins1

wilddir = /dev
wilddir = /proc
wilddir = /tmp
wilddir = /var/tmp

Exclude = yes
}
File= /
}
}

Also, it's Bacula 5.0.3-2 re-compiled from sources provided on www.bacula.org.

If anyone has any idea on what would be causing that mis-behaviour I
would greatly appreciate advise.

Kind regards.
