Re: [Bacula-users] Copy Job results

2011-04-01 Thread Gergely Polonkai
Hello,

You don't restore from Copy jobs. If somehow your original volume is lost,
bacula will automatically restore from the copy volume (thus, never simply
delete your copied volumes).

I don't have any ideas about the copy job size issue, and I can only check this
tomorrow, maybe someone can answer it meanwhile.

Best regards,
Gergely

Probably you has not created the directory defined into bacula-sd.conf
file.

Hello all,

I have given up on RHES 6 for now and I am using Ubuntu 10.10 Server
with Bacula 5.0.2

I have followed the Documentation's tutorial to get the system
configured but while in the console portion (pages 98 - 101) I enter
status storage and get "Device FileStorage is not open or does not
exist"

If I continue with run I get the menu as described in the docs, select
1, and get a message indicating a termination error.

Any ideas as to what I haven't properly configured?

Bill

[Bacula-users] Copy Job results

Hello everyone.

I'm testing with Copy Jobs and I want to check if my results are actually
the expected ones.

First, the Bacula log when running the Copy Job:

By the log alone, everething seems fine, but when I ran "list jobs":

| jobid | name | starttime   | type | level |

The "jobfiles" and "jobbytes" are zeroed... is that normal?

Also, if I try to restore from the ID of the Copy Job (just to check if the
files are really there):

*restore jobid=2109
> Automatically selected Catalog: cat.default
> Using Catalog "cat.default"
> You have selected the following JobId: 2109
>
> Building directory tree for JobId(s) 2109 ...

If that's expected, how do I check if the files are really on the Tape
Volume? Also, how to I restore the files using the Copy Job?

Thanks!

Re: [Bacula-users] Questions regarding the copy job 'selection type'

2011-04-01 Thread jerry lowry

Anyone have any answers, ideas

Based on the Documentation:

OldestVolume This selection keyword selects the volume with the oldest
last write time in the Pool
to be migrated. The Pool to be migrated is the Pool defined in the
Migration Job resource. The
migration control job will then start and run one migration backup job
for each of the Jobs found

on this Volume. The Selection Pattern, if specified, is not used.

If the above is true(in red) will the copy job go to the next volume to
complete the jobid from the oldest volume?

Hello list,

I have setup a copy job that will copy with a 'selection type = oldest
volume' to a hot swapable disk so that I can move it offsite. The job
worked just fine up until it got to the end of the from volume, then
it failed. My question is: If it hits the end of the volume will it
automatically go to the next volume if the last jobid spans between
two volumes? If it does not follow to the next volume does the error
below make sense? (jobid 1661 spans to the next volume)

Ah, I just assumed this problem was with Windows only. I never thought to
check a linux host. I can confirm this on Ubuntu with packaged bacula-fd
5.0.2.

The above config will makes bacula-fd listen on IPv6 only on my Ubuntu
instance (which makes sense of course). However, if you add the IPv4 in:

  FDAddresses  = {
ipv4 = { addr = 0.0.0.0; port = 9102; }
ipv6 = { addr = :: }
  }

It no longer binds to any IPv6 addresses.

[Bacula-users] RFC on how best to share pools, storage devices etc.

2011-04-01 Thread Gavin McCullagh
Hi,

we have bacula in use with about 35 different FDs now. It works
brilliantly for us¹.

Our routine for each server is based on the example automated backup
routine described in the manual. We're not using tapes which some people
may frown on a little, we're using disk-based volumes. The convenience of
disks compared to tapes is something we value -- though I guess I would
like to introduce tapes at some point for offline archival.

When I was starting out, I came across a post somewhere on the lists that
said it was a good idea with disk volumes to create a separate storage
device for each client as it would avoid concurrency issues, etc.

I went a little further with this and created multiple pools (full, inc,
diff) for each client, a fileset for each client, a schedule for each
client, etc. Probably overkill and I now have over a hundred pools,
thirty-something storage devices, schedules, filesets etc. I keep each
host's config in a single file and include it into bacula-dir.conf so it's
quite easy to navigate but I suspect this isn't how it was meant to be.
It's really handy for me to be able to look at each directory on disk and
see the backups for that server, see how big they are, mtimes on the
volumes, etc. Is this likely to present a problem at some point? Should I
urgently mend my ways?

I have a bunch of laptops to back up now and I'm thinking maybe I should
try and be more disciplined for these and create a single storage device,
pool set, jobdefs, schedule and (default) fileset for all. This will allow
me to delegate creation of new jobs more easily, as the config will be
smaller for junior staff. I will only be able to see the total shared
volume sizes and mtimes which is a downside. Are there any other
disadvantages? Is this a good idea or should I just keep going how I have
been? Should I try to do the same on our servers to reduce the config
down?

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions,

Gavin

Re: [Bacula-users] bacula-fd on windows 7 not listening on IPv6 address??

2011-04-01 Thread Matija Nalis

Unfortunately, it does not seem to work (at least around here).

Looking by the documentation it might be bug, or it might be that documentation
is wrong and "ip" is actually an alias for "ipv4" only, and NOT ipv4+ipv6
superset..

So, specifying ip { addr = my.fqdn.name } binds only to IPv4 address (while
"host my.fqdn.name" return both A and records)

To make it listen to both IPv4 and IPv6 specified by FQDN hostname, I must
instead do:

  FDAddresses  = {
ipv4 = { addr = my.fqdn.name }
ipv6 = { addr = my.fqdn.name }
  }

Then it works (binds to both IPv4 and IPv6 specific addresses corresponding
to my.fqdn.name). It would indeed by nicer if documentation worked as
advertised and I could do just:

  FDAddresses  = {
ip = { addr = my.fqdn.name }
  }

but, it does not seem to work... I do not know if that is a bug in the code,
or in the documentation to be found at
http://www.bacula.org/5.0.x-manuals/en/main/main/Client_File_daemon_Configur.html

Also, documentation is surely wrong on another points, as it for example gives:

ipv6 = {
addr = 1.2.3.4;
port = 1205;
}

and 1.2.3.4 is not a valid IPv6 address (it is an IPv4 address)

Also of note for documentation (if it is going to be fixed), one should use
for example 192.0.2.0/24 for documentation IP addresses (and not 1.2.3.4 -
see RFC 5737), and for IPv6 documentation prefix is 2001:db8::/32 (see RFC 3849)

(I would glady provide a patch for documentation if I knew if above specified
HTML file is the source against which the patch should be provided, or is
it automatically generated from something else.)

Well, on my Debianu GNU/Linux, bacula-fd 5.0.2, it does not.

In absence of specified ipv6 addr in FDAddresses, it will listen only on
0.0.0.0 (all IPv4 addresses).

I must use:

  FDAddresses  = {
 ipv6 = { addr = :: }
  }

in order to make it listen to all IPv4 and IPv6 addresses (which is also
probably what OP wanted to do, and what probably should be bacula default
(which it currently isn't) if no FDAddress/FDAddresses are specified.

This should probably be explicitely documented (if it is intended and not a
deficiency of the code, of course)

yes.

When the volume carrying the oldest full backup expires, the subsequent
diffs/incrementals are useless but leaving them in place won't hurt.

If you prune them all out immediately there's a possibility that the
temporary increase in available volumes may result in you not spotting a
need for more tapes/disk space as overall usage creeps up, until you
need the things urgently. (It's a lot easier to purge a couple of
volumes close to expiry than to have to hold up backups while waiting
for more LTO5s to be delivered.)

[Bacula-users] Copy Job doesn't copy anything

2011-04-01 Thread Polonkai Gergely
Hello list,

I am trying to create a copy job that runs every day after all the other
backups, and copies all the backups from our on-site storage to an
off-site storage. When typing "messages" in the console, I see this:

01-Apr 10:17 brokernet-director JobId 6802: The following 1 JobId was
chosen to be copied: 1
01-Apr 10:17 brokernet-director JobId 6802: Copying using JobId=1
Job=bracula-etc.2010-10-25_15.57.05.03
01-Apr 10:17 brokernet-director JobId 6802: Bootstrap records written
to /var/lib/bacula/brokernet-director.restore.3.bsr

But nothing more. No job seems to even touch any of the storages. Am I
missing something?

My configuration is identical to the one in the documentation at

http://www.bacula.org/5.0.x-manuals/en/main/main/Migration_Copy.html

except that I use two File storages, and no tapes at all. I'm using the
5.0.2 suite's Debian version.
