[Bacula-users] FD can't communicate With SD !?

2011-08-17 Thread sabrina bomel
Hello,

I've successfully installed Bacula on a Debian Server. My backup OK, when i
make local test, with Linux and Windows Clients.
I've installed a Bacula Client on a Windows 7, the service OK.
I've open ports on Windows and my router. And to be sûre to join my Windows
client, i've configure Dyndns.
I did the same thing on my router (for the server).
I go on bconsole on my server. The server can connect to the client :

Yes, but they listen on different ports.
Are you sure both ports are reachable from your client box?

[Bacula-users] Bacula changes volume status from append to used. Why?

2011-08-17 Thread Stefan Michael Guenther
Hello,

we like to backup 18 different hosts on one tape. After the last job has
finished, Bacula should close the tape.
The problem is that Bacula closes the volume already after the first (!) job,
so that the next job waits for an appendable volume.

We changed the status of the volume from used to append in the bconsole,
canceled the current job and expected the next job to use the appendable volume.
But instead Bacula switched the volume status back up used and again we have
a job waiting for a volume.

Here is the configuration of the pool:

Pool {
  Name = Dienstag
  Pool Type = Backup
  Recycle = yes
  AutoPrune = yes
  Volume Retention = 8 days
  Maximum Volume Bytes = 800G
  Maximum Volumes = 2
  Maximum Volume Jobs = 18
  UseVolumeOnce = yes
  RecyclePool = Dienstag
}

Why doesn't Bacula save 18 jobs on the volume and why does is change the volume
status?

Thanks for any hints or suggestions,

Stefan

on win xp you can use telnet to check the availability of the ports:

On win 7 you have to install telnet from the installation cd

after you make changes to the Pool resource you must either restart the
daemons or reload to ensure that the changes are incorporated. You must
also 'update the Volume from the Pool Resource' since Volumes that
already exist already have their settings and won't change otherwise.

[Bacula-users] bacula requesting for already mounted volume

2011-08-17 Thread Rao, Uthra R. (GSFC-672.0)[ADNET SYSTEMS INC]
I am testing Bacula 5.0.3 on a FreeBSD system. My Tape Library has two tape
drives. I successfully ran a full backup and it mounted the correct tape
automatically in to the drive. Next I had scheduled a Incremental backup of the
same machine. I see that it has un-mounted the tape which it used for Full
backup from the drive back to the slot and mounted the tape needed for the
Incremental backup to drive 1. Though the correct tape is in the drive I am
getting the following message and the incremental backup is not progressing.
Any help is appreciated:

17-Aug 00:34 lindy-sd JobId 84: Please mount Volume B01029L5 or label a new
one for:

Hello Sabrina,

what do You get when You try to get a status from bconsole for the storage?

Anyway since You have installed configured the server you should know,
which storage is configured in the job resource. It is likly, that the
storage also runs on the same maschine as the director. It usually
listens on port  9103

Kind regards

Hi!
   We're thinking about buying an Iomega Storcenter unit for Bacula.
   I guess there will be no problem in using it with Linux, but, if
somebody has any experience with this hardware, I'd like to know whether
it has a good/acceptable transfer rate.

thanks!

 It seems like the FD can't communicate with the SD.

- make sure client can connect to the given ip address at port 9103 (as
already suggested by others)
- IIRC, SD name has to match between SD config and client/FD config. If you
use a domain name in the SD config, but an ip address in the client config,
you will likely get a bad storage error message.

 Or, my director and my Storage are on the same machine.

Look at the log (it probably tells you why it marks the volume as used). I
suspect UseVolumeOnce (look at the documentation for that).

 Why doesn't Bacula save 18 jobs on the volume and why does is change the

1) the Maximum Volumes directive will limit you to 2 volumes. You might
then get errors about not having any 'appendable media'.

2) Where did the number 18 come from? If it's the number of clients you're
backing up every day, then perhaps what you really want instead of Maximum
Volume Jobs, use something like Volume Use Duration = 23h to tell it not
to use the same volume the next day.

3) Bacula marks volumes as Used if they didn't hit your limit specified as
800G but you told it to stop using that volume for some other reason, such
as UseVolumeOnce, or by hitting Max Volume Jobs.

Check out this section of the manual for more info on what each of the
directives you're using does...

http://www.bacula.org/5.0.x-manuals/en/main/main/Basic_Volume_Management.html

Hi,

  Pool {
Name = Dienstag
Pool Type = Backup
Recycle = yes
AutoPrune = yes
Volume Retention = 8 days
Maximum Volume Bytes = 800G
Maximum Volumes = 2
Maximum Volume Jobs = 18
UseVolumeOnce = yes
RecyclePool = Dienstag
  }

I guess I found the mistake/reason: We removed the setting UseVolumeOnce=yes
already more than a week ago, but obviously we picked an old config file again
for the last changes, because the setting is in there again.

BTW, why shouldn't it be a good idea to use Maximum Volume Jobs to limit the
number of backups? What else could this parameter be for?

Thanks for you suggestions,

Stefan

 - make sure client can connect to the given ip address at port 9103 (as
 already suggested by others)
 - IIRC, SD name has to match between SD config and client/FD config. If you
 use a domain name in the SD config, but an ip address in the client config,
 you will likely get a bad storage error message.

  Or, my director and my Storage are on the same machine.
  Thanks for your help

 I can't telnet from the client on the server only on port 9103.

The above is not clear. I don't know what you did.

You need to issue this command on the bomel-pc-fd client :

telnet 192.168.50.21 9103

It should look *something* like this:

$ telnet kraken 9103
Trying 2001:470:1f07:b80:21b:ab2d...
telnet: connect to address 2001:470:1f07:b80:21b:ab2d: Connection refused
Trying 10.22.0.22...
Connected to kraken.example.org.
Escape character is '^]'.
ENTER FAKE TEXT HERE
Connection closed by foreign host.

Please paste us what happens when you try this.

 But i CAN open BAT and Bconsole, on the client.

That is communication to the Director, not to the SD.

 Thanks.

Do you have your bacula SD configured to use address 127.0.0.1 or
localhost. Neither of these will work if you want to use bacula as a
Network backup program..

Re: [Bacula-users] FD can't communicate With SD !?

2011-08-17 Thread sabrina
Non, i've deleted the 127.0.0.1 adress on the SDAdress.
I'm gone test with domain name, like toto.example.org
Because, i've put domain name for my SD client, and IP for the Server and
SD.
As my client has a dynamic IP, i used dyndns, so i've got a domain name.
And a public IP for the Server.
