[Bacula-users] Got EOF on tape after reboot
Hello,
I have installed bacula 2.4.3 from source.
Now I am testing the tape-unit with mt and btape.
The first time I do "btape -c /usr/local/bacula/bin/bacula-sd.conf /dev/nst0",
the test runs properly.
Then I unload the tape "mt -f /dev/nst0 rewoff" . I reboot the server. I load
the same tape. At that moment I have the following error when I run the btape
test command:
# btape -c /usr/local/bacula/bin/bacula-sd.conf /dev/nst0
Tape block granularity is 1024 bytes.

Thanks for the reply.
I use new tapes.
It is a very strange problem. Only the first test fails. If I do a second test
it runs succesfull. After a reboot I have the same problem.
At the moment I have bacula running and I can do a backup and restore. So I am
ignoring the strange btape-behaviour.

Don't remember if it is necessary but I've alway assumed that btape need newly
blank media.
So I always before run, issue a mt -f /dev/nst0 weof

[Bacula-users] question about schedules and retentions
I did read the bacula manual but, I have some questions about schedules.
I creat the following schedule:
Schedule {
Name = aca-cycle
Run = Level=Incremental Pool=aca mon-thu at 22:00
Run = Level=Full Pool=aca 1st-4th sat at 22:00
}
I backup one client according this schedule, but each different run has also a
different file and job retention. (Incr = 4 weeks, Full = 1 year)
Do I have to create 2 different clients and jobs, one for the incemental backup
and one for the full ?
Because the file and job retenion is defined in the client-directive.

If you actually need the job-specific retention times you are in
trouble...
An incremental can only be based on the latest full backup for the
same job, and a job is defined by the unique combination of client and
fileset.
The better approach is to use distinct pools for full, differential,
and incremental backups, where each pool has its own retention settings.
When a job is purged from a pool volume, the accompanying file and job
data is also removed.
Typically, you'll keep the full backup longest, so in essence, the job
and file retentions apply to full backups only, if they are longer
than the retention times of the partial backup pools retention times.
This, typically, is exactly what is needed - complete control when
restoring from recent backups, and less control but also less database
use for the long-term storage.

After I create the 3 pools (with different retentions), I only have to create 1
client with a file/job retention of 1 year.
When the volume retention of the incremental-pool expires (4weeks), the
corresponding files/jobs will be pruned from the catalog. Because the shortest
retention takes precendence. Is this correct ?

I am still confused about retentiontimes.
I have defined a pool (aca) with a volume-retention of 6days. A client has a
retention (job and file) of 365 days. I have the following schedule:

Usually when someone asks a question like that, they see conflicting
information or have tried it and failed to get what they expect.
Can you elaborate upon that now?
I think if you read the documentation you may see that one overrides
another. Sorry, I don't have time to check just now.
Sorry that I did not mentioned the reason of posting this issue. When I do
"list jobs" I still see older jobs.
I als have look at "Automatic_Volume_Recycling"-chapter and "Automatic Pruning
and Recycling Example" But the example doesn't show the client-config (file/job
retention).
I do not understand the concept of automatic pruning. According to me files/and
jobs are deleted only when a volume is recycled. A volume will be recycled only
when there is no appendable volume and the volume is expired. And that's the
reason I see older jobs. Because the corresponding volume is still appendable.
Is this correct ?

[Bacula-users] problem with webacula
I have installed bacula 2.4.3 on CentOS 5.2 and it's working fine. Now I am trying to configure webacula. I have read the INSTALL. But I can't open some of the pages, for example the director status page. I have the following error in my browser: ERROR: There was a problem executing bconsole. When I open the desktop page I have the following error in my browser: ERROR Command: no output. Check access to /usr/bin/sudo /usr/local/bacula/bin/bconsole -n -c /usr/local/bacula/bin/bconsole.conf As the apache user I can run: /usr/bin/sudo /usr/local/bacula/bin/bconsole -n -c /usr/local/bacula/bin/bconsole.conf I also see an error in the apache's error_log: Cannot open audit interface - aborting. [Bacula-users] listing open files
I would like to have a listing of all open files in my backup-report or in the
log-file. So I can put these in a exclude list.
Is this posssible ?

[Bacula-users] status director and scheduled jobs
I have several tapes in several pools. I use "Volume Use Duration = 23 hours" for each pool. Sometimes when I run the "stat dir" command within the bconsole, I see *unknown* for the scheduled jobs volume. That's because all volumes in the pool have status "used". The moment the backup starts, he changed the status to purged for the expired volumes. Is there a way I can display the correct output for scheduled jobs volume without manually pruning the expired volumes ?. It would be handy because I have no library. So you can see I have 4 times a full backup (pool=aca-week). I expect the next
backup needs a volume from the aca-month (5th sat).
But that's not true.
I had the following message:

I don't really understand the problem, but one thing I noticed is that there
are not always five Saturdays in a month. For example, the end of 2008 looked
like this:

I have a problem with 1 client. It is a solaris zone. I don't have issues with the other zones on the same server, so I can't believe it's a hardware error or firewall problem. (The client is running in a DMZ-zone) I also have used "Heartbeat Interval = 60 seconds" for dir, sd and fd, but the problem stays.
