[Bacula-users] Distribution Best Practices

2011-08-22 Thread Jake Debord
What are ways you would suggest rolling out Bacula clients in a Windows
environment. I would like to keep users from knowing the password. What ways
do you give users Bacula? Do you go to each machine and manually install it
yourself, or do you send them the installer with the dir name and password
and let them? Do you create your own installer?

All tips and advice are welcome!!!

Thanks in advance!

[Bacula-users] SPEED!

2011-07-06 Thread Jake Debord
I have a machine I back up that when done averages:
Elapsed time: 41 mins 47 secs
  Priority:   1
  FD Files Written:   6,948
  SD Files Written:   6,948
  FD Bytes Written: 14,587,852,350 (14.58 GB)
  SD Bytes Written: 14,589,273,339 (14.58 GB)
  Rate:   5818.8 KB/s
  Software Compression:   11.7 %

Is this acceptable??? 6Mbps seems slow. I backup my machine and achieve a
little better results

Elapsed time: 3 mins 51 secs
  Priority:   1
  FD Files Written:   665
  SD Files Written:   665
  FD Bytes Written: 2,192,593,865 (2.192 GB)
  SD Bytes Written: 2,192,728,783 (2.192 GB)
  Rate:   9491.7 KB/s
  Software Compression:   9.8 %

Both of our Machines are almost identical in specs. I'm just wondering
if this is typical or if there are tweeks to speeding things up. My
setup is basically out of the box so not much extra done to it.
I also use mysql for the database.

Yes, I use disk based file storage. It is a full backup but, I will turn
gzip off and defrag it to see if I can improve the speed. Thanks for the
advice and any additional advice is welcomed.

 backup speed has nothing to do with regular backup speed.

Re: [Bacula-users] New to Bacula - emergency situation.

2011-07-05 Thread Jake Debord
Check the compression of gzip make sure your getting the files compressed. May
slow down the backup process but if it's space you are worried about it will
help tremendously. And also, Bacula will always stay at full capacity no matter
if the job is pruned. Unless you MANUALLY delete the volume it will stay there
until it comes time to write over it. Bacula assumes the space given is only
for it's use so it will keep it full until it needs room and will just write
over the old stuff.

Sent from my iPhone.

On Jul 5, 2011, at 8:37 PM, larold bacula-fo...@backupcentral.com wrote:

 I have been asked to support a Linux environment running Bacula on an
 emergency basis. Bacula version is 3.0.1. I only have access to bconsole - no
 guis. I am also completely brand new to Bacula as of a couple of hours ago. I
 have no physical access to this server.

 Basically, I need to determine how to massively reduce the Bacula disk
 footprint (physical space the disk-based volume files are using) without
 adding more data to disk.

 This client has a Bacula server with 1.3+ TB of internal disk. It is
 completely full. I used a 'tune2fs -m 1' to give me back some of the reserved
 space for actual use and breathing room. All Bacula data is written to a
 group of 70 files, each roughly 10 GB a piece. Reducing this footprint would
 help reduce the filesystem from being 100% full.

 There are 23 backup clients. I have set the File Retention on all jobs down
 to 21 days. (Was 60 days). I have set the Job Retention on all jobs down to 2
 months (was 6 months.)

 I would like to know, using bconsole commands only, the correct steps that
 will result in fewer physical volume files (hence reduced disk usage) without
 corrupting any of the data in place. I have a hunch it is some combination of
 prune commands, followed by purges? I just don't know, and want to proceed
 safely.

 All advice much appreciated.

 Please, no:
 - Criticizing of the setup - it wasn't mine
 - Suggestions that require anything complex outside of bconsole
 - Vague descriptions that don't point me to specific steps
 - Steps which require more than a couple GB of free disk space

 Thanks!!

Never mind, I figured it out on my own by tinkering with it. I will
post a code snippet in case someone searching runs across it may be
able to understand better. Thank you Martin for your advise, it just
was not clear enough for me to understand. What I needed to do was add
a separate entry for every level of the folders.

Note for every folder you want to backup you need a start location,
and an entry for every level of folders after until you reach the
folder you want to back up.
Ex:

FileSet {
  Name = HmcBackup
Include {
File = C:/Documents and Settings

Options {
  IgnoreCase = yes
  Compression = GZIP1
RegExDir = ^C:/Documents and settings/[^/]+$

WildDir = C:/Documents and Settings/*/My Documents
WildDir = C:/Documents and Settings/*/Local Settings
WildDir = C:/Documents and Settings/*/Local Settings/Application Data
WildDir = C:/Documents and Settings/*/Local Settings/Application
Data/Microsoft
Wild = C:/Documents and Settings/*/My Documents/*
Wild = C:/Documents and Settings/*/Local Settings/Application Data/Microsoft/*
}
Options {
Exclude = yes
WildDir = C:/Documents and Settings/*/*
}
}
}

The file I have setup to backup is: C:\jaketestfolder It isn't a
network share or anything, just a folder I created with a couple .mpeg
in there so give it something to backup.

 Are you backing up network shares or some drive that can not be
 accessed by the SYSTEM user? Remember the SYSTEM user will not have
 the network drives that the logged in user has. Each user will have
 its own profile.

I am using webmin to edit Bacula. I went to file sets, and changed the
files and directories to backup

Everytime I change it to c:/jaketestfolder when I save it, it reverts
it back to c:\jaketestfolder

That normal? Should I just change it in the conf?

 No. But by your second question you are not editing the configuration

Should I just change it in the conf?

 Yes. I always edit the conf files directly. Remember to issue the
