The problem is we cannot make a full backup terminate with success.
Backup jobs start without any problem, but they end with error after
some GBs transfered (Sometimes after 1GBs, 2GBs, 4GBs. It does not
appear to be a network shapping problem).
When the volume of data to backup is small, the backup job works
fine. The problem arises when we backup the whole data.
Nobody has complained about connectivity problems with that Windows
 Server (it's a database server).

We have tried the following, but none worked:
 - enable and disable VSS.
 - configure heartbeat interval... everywhere! (SD, dir, FD) :-)
 - lower the tcp keepalive time in our Bacula server (The one with the SD
 and Dir installed) (sysctl net.ipv4.tcp_keepalive_time).
 - disable Checksum Offload in the NIC config (As someone suggested in
 http://www.bacula.org/manuals/en/install/install/Client_Fi_daemon_Configura.html).
Our Windows has an HP nic.
 - transfer data from the Windows FD to an SD in the same network the
Windows server is, in an attempt to put SD and FD closer.

The next step is to downgrade Bacula-fd from 5.2.10 to 5.2.5 and see
if that resolves the problem. Any ideas? or any clue?

 Notes:
 - Backups are stored in a storage mounted using NFS.
 - The data we are backing up is a single 50GB file.

 Hi Matias,

You didn't tell what the error message was...

But anyway, this problem reminds me of the one I had some years ago.
I had a Windows client that suddenly always failed on Full backups, most
of the time around 4GB transferred, no problem at all with Incremental,
no problems with Linux Clients which were in the same network,
and no other applications were having network problem on this Windows
 server...
So I tried upgrading both side, tuning the Windows Network parameters
(like checksum offload), played with heartbeat and keepalives... no success.

I finally tested with a simple FTP transfert between the Windows client
and my Linux SD = it failed at approximately 4GB to.
So I ended dumping the network conversation at both side and then
compare the dump in wireshark to find out some that at some time, the
packet were not received, and were retransmited until it really fails.
With those elements I asked the network team to analyse all the network
devices involved between FD and SD, and they find out that a switch
interface had a lot of errors.
After changing it : problem solved !

The fact was that only the Windows Client had the problem, and only
Bacula would triggered it out, my guess is that the Linux TCP/IP pile
was a little more robust than the Windows one.
And it always happened in Full mode because the network is generally
 more used on Full backups.

 /mysysadminlife

 So my advice there :
 1) test the network connection between the two hosts, with a high rate
tranfert protocol like FTP (or iperf ?).
I don't know how iperf handles connection losts, but FTP clients will
show you an error and will try to reconnect, you can't miss it if it
 happens.
 2) analyse all the network elements involved in the route between your 2
 hosts.

 Just my 2 cents !

Re: [Bacula-users] Backup MySQL databases

2011-10-25 Thread Matias Banchoff
¡Hi!
you can make a dump of the entire database and then periodically
(once per hour, once every two hours, etc) you can backup MySQL's
binlogs.
Regarding the dump file, it's much better if you dump each database
in its own file instead of having only one big file with all the
databases inside (It will help in the restoration process).

¡Bye!

module for bacula, backup mysql files (.myd and .myi) directly,...?
How are you doing it ?
I use mysqldump and backup my dumps using bacula, just like you.
I doubt backing up MyIsam files directly is a good idea, especially
if you have big tables, foreign keys and so on... you could endup
 with tables inconsistencies.
Using LVM snapshot would help backing up raw files... but you need to
have you mysql datadir on an lvm volume.
Using filesystem snapshots can't solve the problem of backing up live
database files just by itself, it merely can help reduce downtime of
the database (by going lock/flush - snapshot - unlock - back up
from the snapshot). I'm not implying you are not aware of this issue,
just want to state it clear to not delude the original poster that
snapshotting is a kind of silver bullet.

The restore operation will always happen through a bacula-fd (which
communicates with the bacula-sd), so to restore to a different machine
 it'll need a bacula-fd running on it.

If you add it as a client to your bacula setup you'll be able to choose
it in bconsole when you mod the restore job. You can then still change
the Where option in the job to restore it to a different path on that
 client.

Re: [Bacula-users] Duplicate entries on mysql database

2011-04-18 Thread Matias Banchoff
Hi!
once I had a problem with our MySQL catalog. I don't know if the
problem is the same, but perhaps this helps you...
1) First, make a dump of your database, just in case
2) You can run from the mysql console:
   - check table, to verify data and indexes integrity.
   - Repair table, fixes a table magically (I don't know how mysql
repairs the table).
   - analyze table, it works on the indexes trying to optimize them. But
I don't remember whether it fixes anything.

File). Trabaja sobre los
archivos de datos
   - analyze table: similar, pero sobre los indices. Este no lo corri

[Bacula-users] Restores when the files are not present in the catalog

2010-04-28 Thread Matias Banchoff
Hello everybody,
today I had to make a full restore of a client. My backup policy says:
1) Make a full backup monthly.
2) Daily incrementals.
3) Every Sunday, run differential backups.

When I make a full restore, it starts with the last Full, then the
differential volumes follow and last, the incrementals.

Now the problem: The files corresponding to the full backup used for the
restoration were purged. And when I write done in the bconsole, it
does not appear in the list of requiered volumes. My question is: Are
the files backed up in the full volume actually restored?

This is an extract of the bconsole:

Building directory tree for JobId 26975 ... --- In this jobs
the Full volume was written
Building directory tree for JobId 27648 ...
Building directory tree for JobId 28138 ... ++
Building directory tree for JobId 28384 ...
Building directory tree for JobId 28489 ...
Building directory tree for JobId 28544 ... +
Building directory tree for JobId 28582 ...
Building directory tree for JobId 28618 ... +++
Building directory tree for JobId 28693 ...

[... output cut ]

$ done
Bootstrap records written to /var/lib/bacula//some-dir.restore.5.bsr

The job will require the following
   Volume(s) Storage(s)SD Device(s)
===

-- Here there should be the Full Volume!
   Server-Diff-0001 some-sd-disco FileStorage
   Server-Diff-0002 some-sd-disco FileStorage
   Server-Inc-0006 some-sd-disco FileStorage
   Server-Inc-0004 some-sd-disco FileStorage
   Server-Diff-0003 some-sd-disco FileStorage
   Server-Inc-0005 some-sd-disco FileStorage

Will Bacula restore the files stored in the Full volume, although that
volume is not listed above? If not, how can I restore those files?

What I've done is the following:
1) Restore only the Full volume. Bacula says there are no files in the
catalog and asks me if I want to restore everything. I said yes.
2) Restore the other volumes, in other job, to the same place.

Well, I hope you can understand my doubt! jeje.

Bye! And thanks!

[Bacula-users] How to cancel a job before it begins?

2010-04-22 Thread Matias Banchoff
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,
is there a way to cancel a job before it starts running -without
changing Bacula's configuration-.

This is the problem: I have a job that is going to run at midnight,
but for some reason I do not want it to run this particular night
(Because the storage device will not be able to catch the data sent,
but only for this night). That's why I'd like to cancel the job.

I've commented the lines in my Bacula config and there were no
problems, but I ask just to know if it is possible or not.

Bye bye! And thanks!!

[Bacula-users] Compatibility table

2010-03-26 Thread Matias Banchoff
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hello,
we're backing up some servers, and we ended up with different Bacula
versions. Our dir and sd is 2.4.2, and the clients are 1.36.3, 1.38.7,
1.38.11, 2.0.0, 2.2.8, 2.4.1 and 2.4.4 :-)
We are planning a migration, and I was looking for a table showing
compatibility issues between every version. Is there such a table?

Re: [Bacula-users] Simple bacula-fd test (e.g. telnet)?

2009-08-24 Thread Matias Banchoff

Hi!
I've never worked with Macs, but have you tried something like
netstat -nltp to see if the daemon is binded to the localhost or to
0.0.0.0 ??
  Did you check /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny ??

Bye!

Sean M Clark escribió:
I just tried to update bacula-fd on one of our client macs which had
been working only minutes before. Now network connections to bacula-fd
are failing except from localhost. I tried re-installing the older 2.x
version that was previous on it, and now IT has the same symptoms.

There's a regular firewall rule allowing connection from our bacula
director, but attempts to connect time out. If I telnet in from the
console on the client itself it does connect, but I have no way to tell
if the client is really responding or not (I tried sending Hello
Director (director name) calling but it just drops the connection
immediately with no message. Since working clients do the same thing, I
assume this just isn't a valid message for bacula-fd.)

(I suspect Symantec AutoProtect(tm) has decided to interfere with the
connections, but I'm not sure - I'd like to confirm that bacula-fd is
itself responding correctly to network connections that it's allowed to
 make.)

Is there any simple way to demonstrate the bacula-fd is actually working
(and therefore the problem is elsewhere in the network stack) by
 connecting from localhost?

[Bacula-users] Problem with tape

2009-08-21 Thread Matias Banchoff
Hello,
Today I had a problem with an LTO-3 400/800 tape:
I purged the corresponding volume in the catalog; then, when I mounted
the tape, the following error message appeared:

--
3902 Cannot mount Volume on Storage Device Tape-LTO-Storage
(/dev/nst0) because:
Requested Volume on Tape-LTO-Storage (/dev/nst0) is not a Bacula
labeled Volume, because: ERR=block.c:1012 Read zero bytes at 0:0 on
device Tape-LTO-Storage (/dev/nst0).
3905 Device Tape-LTO-Storage (/dev/nst0) open but no Bacula volume is
mounted.
If this is not a blank tape, try unmounting and remounting the Volume.

The tape did have a label. That's why I don't understand... It's like if
the label would have been erased?
I mounted it several times, but it didn't work. Finally, I deleted the
tape and relabeled it:

  mt -f /dev/nst0 rewind
  mt -f /dev/nst0 weof
# Then mounted it and label it again...

Now it's working fine, but I wanted to know if somebody has had this
problem before...

Hello,
I'm having a problem with a windows 2003 server since some weeks.
The problem appears to happend randomly when I run Full backups (Some

I'm doing backups of this machine since a year and a half, and just
recently it started with this error. The data volume has kept somehow
constant, between 40 and 50 GB during this period.
- - The ethernet cannot be because it's been always the same, we haven't
changed it.
- - The client did not have the Heartbit interval option set, so I set
it; but the problem persists.
- - There have been no changes in the firewall (apart, there is another
windows machine behind the firewall that uses bacula too, an it
doesn't have any problem).
- - The amount of data transfered cannot be the problem, because until
some time (when the full jobs ended right :-) ), the data transfered
was between 40 and 50 GB.
- - Might it be a problem between the bacula versions? Do you suggest
any probe that I could run?

My setup is the following:

Windows 2003 FD Linux machine doing NAT - Linux machine
running Bacula SD and Director

Versions, according to the output of status storage, status
director and status client:
- - Bacula dir: Version: 2.4.2 (26 July 2008)
- - Bacula sd: Version: 2.2.8 (26 January 2008) i486-pc-linux-gnu
debian lenny/sid
- - Bacula fd version:
server2003-fd Version: 2.0.0 (04 January 2007) VSS Linux
Cross-compile Win32
Daemon started 01-Oct-08 13:35, 70 Jobs run since started.
 Heap: bytes=101,724 max_bytes=295,310 bufs=100 max_bufs=230
 Sizeof: boffset_t=8 size_t=4 debug=0 trace=1

I set the Heartbeat Interval option for every hour: Heartbeat
Interval = 3600
So my fd config file looks like this:

-
---
FileDaemon {
  Name = server-fd
  FDport = 9102
  FDaddress = an_ip
  WorkingDirectory = /var/lib/bacula
  Pid Directory = /var/run/bacula
  Maximum Concurrent Jobs = 20

  Heartbeat Interval = 3600# a cada hora
}
-
---

Here there are two failed backups, as examples (Note: xx
is the public IP of the firewall doing NAT):
