Thanks, this makes it easier to find existing bugs. I had no idea
there was an anonymous account (so I was forced to make one...).

The old releases are hidden on the sourceforge download page. If you
need an older version you can pull it from SVN and build it yourself.

Re: [Bacula-users] Use of Differential

2007-12-27 Thread Michael Short
Differentials are used to prevent having to piece together tons of
incrementals, but with a differential you are backing up every change
since the full backup every job. Incremental jobs only backup new data
since the last incremental or full.

Hope this clears things up.

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula Compression

2007-12-27 Thread Michael Short
Compression is handled by the FD, so you will find all the related
compression code there. However, you will also need to patch the DIR
and the SD to recognize the new compression. I was looking into this
before, and I probably will again, but the compression code isn't
really simple so adding a new compression algorithm would involve lots
of new code. This would include a special handler to determine what
kind of compression is being used (as right now it checks for whether
or not GZIP is on).

Another problem you will probably encounter is that the encryption and
compression code are not separated in any sensible way. IIRC bacula
has to have a separate chunk of code for uncompressed unencrypted,
compressed unencrypted, compressed encrypted, and uncompressed
encrypted backup modes.

There is a lot of room for improvement here.

[Bacula-users] Incorrect VolFiles from "list volumes"

2007-12-27 Thread Michael Short
Hello,

I run backups from a number of windows based servers and today I
decided to do a bit of disk management. However, when I ran "list
volumes" in the console it seems that the "VolFiles" entry is
incorrect, usually showing 0 files in a volume with over 200GB worth
of data (some volumes do show 1 or more files, but not nearly enough).
I would also like to point out that these volumes work fine when
performing restores.

I am running Bacula 2.2.6 and I have automatic pruning turned off, any clues?

[Bacula-users] Win32 Bacula Client, memory leak?

2007-12-18 Thread Michael Short
Hey guys, over the past week I have been attempting to restore to a
windows client with 512mb ram and no pagefile only to be frustrated
with "There is not enough storage to complete this operation". After
some searches this error seems to mean I've run out of memory! This is
a virtual machine with plenty of disk space and there is no reason
Bacula needs 400+mb of memory to transfer some 80GB of files over the
network.

Monitoring the task manager through the process (after I upgraded the
machine to handle Bacula's memory appetite) revealed that Bacula's
memory usage continues to grow in size during the restore, finally
releasing the 400MB of ram used when the restore is finished. Perhaps
someone could take a gander at why this is happening?

I will try this workaround but I doubt this is a mysql problem, my
backups have been working perfectly until my recent upgrade from
2.0.3->2.2.5. Surely bacula doesn't keep a mysql thread open for the
entire duration of the backup, that seems very inefficient.

I am very perplexed with this issue and my client is becoming more
impatient with each passing day (and failed job). I noticed a message
in the mailing list from someone in 2.2.4 with the same problem.
However, there didn't seem to be an answer to his question.

Please help

Re: [Bacula-users] Question about compressed backups

2007-11-12 Thread Michael Short
Bacula has no way to determine whether or not a blob of data is
compressed. It simply grabs the data, compresses it, and streams it to
the SD without performing any other time consuming checks.

I wouldn't worry about it though, GZIP compresses and uncompresses
pretty quickly with little to no overhead.

-Michael

Re: [Bacula-users] Odd Restores

I can't say for sure, but you could have a JobDef assigned to the
restore job configuration which contains a schedule. However, I
haven't ever heard of jobs just starting by themselves.

Re: [Bacula-users] Why use multiple pools with disk-based backup?

2007-11-05 Thread Michael Short
I used to have different names for full backups but I decided on a
single pool for simplicity. It is easy enough to tell which volumes
are used for full and incremental backups.

I meant for my last post to go to the list as well.

Sincerely,
-Michael

Re: [Bacula-users] Ignoring fileset changes

2007-11-05 Thread Michael Short
I have some experience with this on my own systems. Make sure the
fileset name has not been changed. Also make sure you physically
restart bacula rather than reload it, as I've found reload doesn't
always work the way I think it should.

After the volumes are pruned they are no longer referenced by the
catalog. To have bacula reuse them make sure the volumes are recycled
or deleted.

Re: [Bacula-users] Advice

2007-11-05 Thread Michael Short
This is a limitation of bacula, in order to free up space you must
prune your volumes. The volume retention setting sets how long the
volumes will live in the database, but it is up to you to delete them.
If you need more space you can just prune them manually from the
console.

Pruning files will only erase them from the database, you must delete
the volume to remove the file from your storage space.

Hopefully at some point in the future there will be a way to expunge
files from volumes by internal differentials.

suggest enabling debugging and see if anything strange is happening

Actually, when you run estimate, it runs a job. Your estimate job
failed because of a connection problem, and left a message in your

I won't be able to run the test until later, this is my JobDefault for
reference:

JobDefs {
  Name = "secnet-def"
  Type = Backup
  Level = Full
  FileSet = "secnet-def"
  Storage = "File"
  Messages = "Standard"
  Priority = 10
}

The FileSet "secnet-def" is overridden by the the client
configuration. Tonite I will leave the director in debugging mode for
the night and see if the jobs are interacting. I scheduled the backup
to run on its lonesome but it seemed to work fine.

I plan to try this once I figure out how to get the schedules updated.

Running bacula-dir and bacula-sd 2.0.3, and bacula-fd 2.0.0. I know
there are some serious bugs that have been fixed and I am working on
upgrading (not an easy task).

I ran the backup manually with run and there seemed to be no problems.
Also, when I set a delay in the run time there aren't any problems.
However, I'm not sure how to update the scheduled jobs list after it
has already been generated... I updated the configuration but it
doesn't seem to care. Also tried deleting bacula's state file but that
didn't work either. Any tips?

job) for every one of my ~30 clients. However, recently, one of the
jobs has started to act differently. When the backup starts, it starts
again, only to cause the job to fail.

Re: [Bacula-users] File size from backup needed. Where?

2007-10-22 Thread Michael Short
This information is kept in the bacula database under the 'File' table
in the 'LStat' field. However, this information is compressed in some
form of proprietary hexadecimal compression.

I believe there are some individuals who have figured out how to read
this information such as the authors of "webacula".

You should be able to use "winbacula.exe /s /D=C:\bacula" for a silent
install. However, the installer will always default to a Client only
install, and will only install the most default and bland
configuration files.

I have never tested this personally, nor do I know if this
functionality will work for updates.

Re: [Bacula-users] Problem with backing up over the internet

2007-10-17 Thread Michael Short
I believe your problem is caused by an internal storage daemon and an
external client. When the bacula director starts a job, the director tells
the file daemon to backup X files to X storage daemon with X ip and X
authentication. Your file daemon is attempting to connect to your storage
daemon with it's internal ip.

Sincerely,
-Michael

Re: [Bacula-users] Verifying run of backups - script?

2007-10-16 Thread Michael Short
To make sure a job ran, simply mash up a bash script (or php/python) and run
an sql query for all jobs that started on a certain day. Then you could
compile this in a single readable e-mail. Then add an admin job which runs
the script at a specified time every day (preferably after your backups, so
I'd give it a higher priority).

Creating a separate job would not be easy as our system uses a management
interface to add unique clients (and not independent jobs). Also using xcopy
might destroy some of the permissions (as this is a home directory). Thanks
for the suggestions but these are not suitable fixes for me.

Hopefully feature #1 will be implemented soon (Item 1: Accurate

[Bacula-users] Updating Windows Time Stamps

2007-09-13 Thread Michael Short
I have a system with a folder of new files, but the time stamp of the files
is not newer than the last backup. How do I update the timestamp of every
file and folder in a directory so that it will be recognized by bacula?

Surely there must be some utility available for this, preferably free. I
have tried using the *nix tools for windows (touch) but I ran into some
problems.

Re: [Bacula-users] webacula 0.5.beta

2007-09-12 Thread Michael Short
Are you the primary developer of this software? If so, I wanted to
personally say thank you for finally unraveling the mystery that is the
bacula catalog. Some time ago I attempted a similar project but was unable
to complete it due to bacula's encrypted attributes. Now maybe I can. I will
definitely be looking into this project as well.

Thanks!

[Bacula-users] Feature Request: "Reload" Functionality in Storage/File Daemon

2007-06-04 Thread Michael Short
Item 1: Add "Reload" Functionality to Storage/File Daemon
  Origin: Michael Short <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
  Date: 2 June 2007
  Status: Non-existent

What: The Bacula Storage Daemon and Bacula File Daemon need "reload"
functionality similar to the Bacula Director. Alternatively, a subroutine
should be added to circumvent job failure if either daemon were to be restarted
during a backup.

Why:This functionality is important because important backup jobs will
fail if configuration changes are needed in the storage daemon or the file
daemon.

Notes: I would like to added emphasis on the storage daemon side of this
feature request because usually a configuration change to a file daemon would
cause a job failure anyways.
