Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula release version 7.4.4

2016-09-23 Thread Randy Katz
This question is starting to sound like a general "how do I use Bacula?"
question. Please see the documentation

about how to configure your Director and Clients and work up an initial
test backup. I assume whichever machine

is already running your Director either has a mount on the FreeNAS or
is the FreeNAS system and can select a

directory to backup to there. Once you have your Director working with a
test Client and the backups are running

you should know if you have any further questions.

I don't see any database setup/config in that tutorial.

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula accurate issues

2016-08-24 Thread Randy Katz
I'm not saying you are bad like me, but, I just had what looks like this
issue and there was an "archive"

being made in that machine that contained those files. I see you have
this on multiple machines, but I would

check just in case. Otherwise there *could* be another reason but I am
unaware of it.

I dont remember where the instructions are. Just use those scripts to create
and setup the bacula database from the mysql root with ~/.my.cnf so it doesnt
ask for password.

[Bacula-users] Remove Client - Lazy Question

2016-06-03 Thread Randy Katz
Hi, if I remove a client that is currently on a backup schedule (full,
diff, incr) with it's retention (90 days or something like that)

so now the director issues an error "JobId 7172: Warning: bsock.c:107
Could not connect to Client:". Will it leave alone the currently

backed up jobs or will it purge them according to the retention? In this
particular case I would like it to purge them over the retention time

but in other cases I might want to lock it, in which I guess removing
the client from the director and the jobs to a different file location

should do the trick (disk backup, not tape).

Thanks in advance for any comments.

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula - Sqlite to Mysql

2016-05-27 Thread Randy Katz
you can copy your config files to another directory, typically a
reconfigure will not remove config files.

as for mysql you should find all the pertinent db creation scripts in
/etc/bacula. The part that pertains to

the database is usually in bacula-dir.conf and looks something like this:

Catalog {
  Name = MyCatalog
# Uncomment the following line if you want the dbi driver
# dbdriver = "dbi:mysql"; dbaddress = 127.0.0.1; dbport =
  dbname = "bacula"; dbuser = "bacula"; dbpassword = "p24b2p"
}

So if you created a mysql database called bacula, gave the bacula mysql
user access to it with a

password of p24b2p and used the above instead of what is in there and
then ran the create database command

create_bacula_database that should get you on your way.

Hi, it looks like you recompiled and installed from source, if you have
installed that then it should definitely

backup with compression. Have you tested putting it in place and doing a

Re: [Bacula-users] compile of bacula 5.2.13 failing

2016-05-21 Thread Randy Katz
ps I checked 2 directors that do not backup windows and the tables were
there but empty, so if you have

any question I guess the answer is that the default database has it and
that it is used when Windows backups

are created (or restored). PS you don't need to build bacula to get the
database table structure. You just need

to backup the db in place and issue the command to rebuild the database.
They are in /etc/bacula:

drop_bacula_database

create_bacula_database

from there you could examine the db created.

Well for Bacula there is this list and the documentation, here:
http://blog.bacula.org/documentation/documentation/

But you mentioned non Bacula enterprise, not sure what you are referring
to. At any rate if you have specific problems or

questions that you have not found solutions to in the docs you can ask here.

Re: [Bacula-users] Client backup with compress

2016-03-27 Thread Randy Katz
Heitor,

-->Hello, Randy: it is kind of hard to follow this since this thread was
hijacked by you. =)

I was trying to be helpful and in the process discovered one of my
clients was not compressing, if you
call my activity highjacking then I will stay off this list. One client
not compressing out of 40 is the least
of my worries at this point. I am happy you can point to an issue in the
config file in respect to the OP of
this post, however, it is not so in my case, and running latest and
confirmed all the relevant development
libraries at compile time.

2016-03-26 Thread Randy Katz
Kern, if you have been following this my fileset is quite default, does
not receive an error, and still does not compress,
only on one client out of about 40:

FileSet {
  Name = "client-28-filesetdefinition"
  Include {
Options {
  signature = MD5
  compression = GZIP
}
File = /
  }
  Exclude {
File = /tmp
File = /proc
File = /.journal
File = /.fsck
File = /home/virtfs
  }
}

Yes, her client compilation confirmed compression for gzip and lzo...so now I
would think there is an issue here. I also have one client out of around 40
that is not compressing. Dir and fd compiled from source version 7.4.0.

2016-03-24 Thread Randy Katz
Hi Ankush, are you sure the files you are backing up can be compressed?
You might
want to try a separate backup on the same client of something like
/usr/local /etc
just to test, these should definitely compress. Sometimes video, audio
and other dense
files do not compress.

Re: [Bacula-users] Client backup with compress

2016-03-20 Thread Randy Katz
HEY GUYS, READ THIS!

FYI - I found something really strange about this, and you might want to
check because I have
many servers running and compression is fine, LZO and GZIP, however I
just installed a new
client and now it is not compressing. Then I also discovered it is
backing up full on every Incremental,
so I said WTF! And on this particular server ntpd is not running. So I
reconfigure /etc/sysconfig/clock,
/etc/localtime (CentOS 6), install ntp, crank up ntpd and walla, now
incrementals are incremental and
compression is compressed!!!

Re: [Bacula-users] Director will not connect to a remote client

2016-03-09 Thread Randy Katz
Hi, you keep saying you "forwarded" the ports. I don't think that that
is the correct way to
use the firewall rules, unless you are trying to create a new
terminology or are confused. The
ports, per the firewall doc, need to be open. In my setup I use iptables
rules to open the specific
ports for the specific directors and their ports and/or clients for
their ports. Looks something
like this on the client side:

ACCEPT tcp -- anywhere directorname.mydomain.ext tcp
dpt:bacula-sd
ACCEPT tcp -- directorname.mydomain.extanywheretcp
dpt:bacula-fd

And like this on the director side:

ACCEPT tcp -- clientname.mydomain.ext anywheretcp
dpt:bacula-sd

So there are no FORWARDING statements in that configuration, I would
consider this, test
the telnet statements that folk have posted, that should point in the
right direction.

On Redhat/CentOS try installing (yum install):
zlib
zlib-devel
lzo
lzo-devel
and then restarting bacula. I have never tried this as I always
compile these sorts of things from source.

Hello confirmation, using 7.4.0 working fine, which I received free but
was happy to pay for
as I am using it for commercial reasons.

 Hello,
after Windows client upgrade from public 5.2.10 to developers'

big and too slow. Before upgrade with 5.2.10:

Elapsed time: 4 hours 28 mins 43 secs
 FD Files Written: 180,897
FD Bytes Written: 18,411,348,578 (18.41 GB)

 After upgrade with 7.0.5:

Elapsed time: 1 day 8 hours 31 mins 19 secs
 FD Files Written: 10,770,656
FD Bytes Written: 24,493,173,950 (24.49 GB)

The difference is in ~ 10,000,000 entries.

Full job has ~ 33,000,000 entries, where there are ~ 10,000,000
directories and ~ 23,000,000 files (strange itself). Job listing
confirmed, that 7.0.5 Windows client includes all directory
entries on the server in the incremental backup. Please, is there
a configuration possibility to work around this problem?

I have tried 7.4.0 for personal use also, and it works like 5.2.10,
so maybe just 7.0.5 has this bug? Meantmime, I had to return to
 5.2.10.

 Thank you.

If it's any help I was running bacula-win64-5.2.10 until recently and
upgraded to bacula-enterprise-win64-7.4.0 without a hitch. Directors are

Re: [Bacula-users] chmod 770 (was Re: Bacula Release 7.4.0)

This doesn't make sense. So I checked mine:

grep 'chmod 770' *
Makefile: chmod 770 $(DESTDIR)$(sysconfdir)
Makefile: chmod 770 $(DESTDIR)$(working_dir); \
Makefile.in:chmod 770 $(DESTDIR)$(sysconfdir)
Makefile.in: chmod 770 $(DESTDIR)$(working_dir); \

grep sysconfdir config.log
sysconfdir='/etc/bacula'
grep working_dir config.log
working_dir='/opt/bacula/working'

Are you sure you didn't pass "special" config parameters to ./configure?
The above
from my setup are unaltered from the source tarball.

Re: [Bacula-users] Maximum Bandwidth Per Job Question

2016-02-04 Thread Randy Katz
My original question, is anyone using Max Bandwidth successfully and
what are YOUR optimal settings?
This is in the context of having multiple KVM VMs backing up from a
node. If you are not using Max Bandwidth
then this question is not for you. Thanks!

As for looking into ethtool, subtracting the amount bandwidth average
used from capacity and dividing that by the amount
of backup processes minus a percentage for overhead, I can do that, and
understand that well. This is not really my question.
If anyone cares to share, I thank you in advance.

Using compression, GZIP, no level is set. Here is a a copy/paste from
one of the recent backups:

  FD Files Written: 1,849,713
  SD Files Written: 1,849,713
FD Bytes Written: 153,782,430,234 (153.7 GB)
SD Bytes Written: 154,119,461,239 (154.1 GB)
  Rate: 2005.4 KB/s
  Software Compression: 35.9% 1.6:1
  Snapshot/VSS: no
  Encryption: no

I am not sure if LZO is the answer in this case. According to a previous
discussion it
may not be much different, performance wise.

As for the question from Ana of when
servers are not going to be used well it is already set for that time but there
is never
really a time when servers should be very very slow or inactive. As for your
suggestion
to buy another software I have been using Bacula for many years and have not
had any
issues until recently due to increased activity and am asking the question
about Maximum
Bandwidth and what settings folk are using as it appears to be only a bandwidth
limit/throttle
and not a CPU issue.

Thanks!

[Bacula-users] Maximum Bandwidth Per Job Question

2016-02-03 Thread Randy Katz
Hi,

I am having the issue that servers that have multiple KVM VM's that are
being backed up
are throttling the servers resources and bringing it to a crawl. I tried
staggering the Schedule
times which resulted in the server being throttled for a shorter amount
of time. I don't like
my servers to be throttled, mainly because they need to serve!

Is anyone using Maximum Bandwidth Per Job in this capacity and what
bandwidth setting
have you found to be optimal, and if you know why that would be most
appreciated, thanks!

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula Release 7.4.0

2016-01-24 Thread Randy Katz
Hello Kern,

FYI:

I had already downloaded and ran the personal version. And now am proud
to say I have paid for it based on your
response. Glad to help, especially if/when it is affordable!

Also, you should know that the version that is there is already 7.4.0,
my question was more of if there was a different
version for those that paid for it but I guess that makes no sense since
7.4.0 is the latest release. At any rate safe
travels please!

---snip---

If you go to www.bacula.org -> Downloads -> Download Center you will
find where you can download the Windows binaries for 7.2.0 or 7.4.0 for
personal use free of charge. However, if you are a hosting company, you
should go to Bacula Systems and purchase the binaries. I prefer to
consider the modest fee a donation for more open source features for
those who really can afford to make a donation, but the real reason is
that it is simply to compensate Bacula Systems for the work they pay to
be done (writing code, building the package, making it available). No it
is not a Windows issue. I am not 100% sure that they currently have the
7.4.0 binaries, but the 7.2.0 binaries *should* work with a 7.4.0
community version. If you *really* need a non-personal use license for
the 7.4.0 binaries, please contact me directly at k...@sibbald.com.
However, I will be off-line for a couple of days while travelling.
Thanks for asking about the license :-) Best regards, Kern

Re: [Bacula-users] Bacula Release 7.4.0

2016-01-23 Thread Randy Katz
Ran my script yesterday to upgrade all the FD's, took 4 times as long as
I thought it would!
All backups running without a hitch, much thanks for a successful
upgrade! I don't take
this for granted.

FYI - I am backing up one Windows VM instance, according to Bacula it
seems we must pay
for a license to do this? a) Is the software with the $25 license any
different than the personal
download (not that I really care, will buy the license regardless)? b)
Is this licensing in order to
compensate the packager for doing the compile or is it some Windows
related issue, just curious?

Thanks,
~r

Yes, however, formatting the disk is a bit extreme, you can just go to
the designated
directory and remove all the files, if it takes a while you can
background the task:

cd /baculabackupdirectory

nohup rm -f * &

or if you have subdirectories

nohup rm -rf * &

[Bacula-users] new bacula install - keyboard scroll question

2015-10-11 Thread Randy Katz
Hi,

I have several Bacula directors running. When I go into bconsole
and issue a command and then push up arrow it scrolls to the previous
command, as it should. I just setup a new Bacula server, same version
bacula-7.2.0 and same ./configure --with-mysql command and this
one does not scroll. I have verified scrolling is working at the OS level.
Is there anything in the conf files that could/would affect this?

Best regards,
Randy Katz

Re: [Bacula-users] Compile release 7.2.0 from sources failed in Centos 6.7

2015-08-27 Thread Randy Katz
I compiled 7.2.0 on around 50 VMs, I had a problem on one of the 50. I
tried to identify the difference between
that VM and could not so I ended up going to the version before and it
compiled on that VM. I don't remember which
VM it was but if you need the info I will dig through my backup notices
and find it, otherwise it is fine running
from the previous version for now. We don't use RPMs for Bacula, always
compile.

Re: [Bacula-users] restore director

2015-06-28 Thread Randy Katz
Last I had to use bscan it worked fine by the simple docs...takes a long time
though. As for backing up your conf and database that is defined in the example
configurations. You should never rely on a backup tool you have not tested the
restore procedures with.

[Bacula-users] ssd drive question

2012-05-31 Thread Randy Katz
Hi,

Has anyone tried to use an SSD drive to house the MySQL database for
Bacula and understand the
performance differences, if any? I am wondering if it will provide a
significant speed boost to running it
on disk or not. Any clues might be very helpful, thanks.

ok, my mysql did the same thing:

mysql Ver 14.14 Distrib 5.5.21, for Linux (x86_64) using readline 5.1

I just setup a user that can access without a password and made the string:

mysql+mysqlconnector://usernopass:@localhost
<mailto:squirmFartz556@localhost>/bacula

which seemed to work, forgot about that!

Re: [Bacula-users] Preserving data of decommissioned Bacula client

2011-12-21 Thread Randy Katz
I asked this recently and was pointed to the docs on bscan.
So I tested bscan on a separate Director box and it works very
well, takes a while, but is feasible. So you would:

Get hard copy or the best thing to it of the last Full backup you want
to save and/or any incr/diff after that.

When you need to access that for restore you would run bscan on the
volume (be it
tape or hard drive file) and then access the jobs there were restored.

My advice is to do a small Full backup of some data, transfer that
volume to a
different Director and work the tools (bscan) on it and do a restore so
you know
the process.

The link to the docs for bscan is here (version 3.0x though I don't know
where it is in the current docs):
http://www.bacula.org/3.0.x-manuals/en/utility/utility/Volume_Utility_Tools.html

Regards.

fyi - when I upgraded bacula from 5.0.3 to 5.2.1 I upgraded the Director

[Bacula-users] compression

Has anyone changed from GZIP compression to LZO for disk backups and

[Bacula-users] backup / restore question

2011-10-26 Thread Randy Katz
Hi,

I have a working bacula system with rotation of (full/diff/incr).
If I want to retain one of the full backups indefinitely I know where
the file is (archived to disk and each job goes into a separate file).
I can copy that file somewhere and hold onto it but in the even of
needing to restore from it, how would that be accomplished?

Is there a way to:

a) Copy the file to a different Director
b) Access the file for restores

And if the Directory database is needed as well how would this
be accomplished.

If this has already been discussed enough please point me to the
archives.

Thanks,
Randy Katz

[Bacula-users] Multiple Backups - Remote/Local Question

2011-10-04 Thread Randy Katz
Hello Esteemed Bacula People!

I have backups on a 90-120 day cycles with full/diff/incr from a pool of
machines to
a Director machine. The pool of machines also has a local script backup
to secondary
hard drive space which I would like to "convert" to bacula backups
instead, so each
Client Machine would now become a Director with one Client (itself) and
have a backup
schedule and so forth.

Has anyone done this and familiar with any gotchas, if any?

Thank you in advance,
Randy

On second thought I don't think my answer about console is the case
here. I searched for mod Job not run and did not see anything that
pertains, perahaps
some configuration issue, please post configs. If anyone has run into

Hi, are you sure it is not a keyboard/console issue? Are you on the
console or using a remote client (ssh?) to
get to the director server? If you are using remote try using Putty, I
use it all the time with bconsole and it
works great. If not make sure your console settings are good, also if
there is a job running at the same time
make sure that it is not causing a pause. Check /var/bacula/working/log
for clues as well.

Re: [Bacula-users] Pool per client

2011-04-13 Thread Randy Katz

On 4/12/2011 4:04 PM, Pablo Marques wrote:

I have a setup to backup lots of clients over slow links.
I want to have each client (or group of clients) backed up to
dedicated client pools, so client1 will go to pool client1, and so on.
That way I have better control of the space used, if a client goes
away I can simply delete the tapes (or files) an get the space back
immediately.

Also it gives me better control on the retention on a per client basis.

The problem is that when I try to backup multiple clients at the same
time, the storage process has to wait for each job to finish before it
can move to the next because it needs to change the tape (different
client --> different pool). Some clients may take many hours to
finish, forcing everybody else to wait.

I enabled spooling, but it seems like Bacula requires to mount a tape
from the client pool on a drive before the client spooling can begin.

Can this be avoided?

A possible solution would be to do all backups on a special pool and
after they are done migrate later each client job to each client pool.
But I cannot find a way to modify the "Next Pool" dynamically. It is
a fixed setting on the Pool definition.

Does anybody have suggestions on how to accomplish this?

Look into Maximum Concurrent Jobs in your Storage definition.

Randy

[Bacula-users] Bacula Changes Lives

2011-04-02 Thread Randy Katz
Though still mortal I sense a great change since meeting...Bacula!

My favorite Bacula quote:

"In order to create an effective backup schedule of Full then
Incremental/Differential backups for x time (days) the first Full backup
must be retained until the last Incremental/Differential before the next
Full has expired and been purged as well as that next Full been
successfully created." - me

Regards all,
Randy

PS - One might wish to retain the first (and other) Full for more time
for various reasons.

List please disregard my last questions on this, I don't know what I was
thinking. The first full cannot
expire until all pertinent (between the date of the First Full and the
next Full) Incrementals and/or Differentials
have expired otherwise it renders them virtually useless.

Well since I asked the question I have scripted a Pools.conf creation
script for Full, Diff, and Incr for each Client to backup,
removed the Pools from bacula-dir.conf and added an Include
(@/etc/bacula/conf.d/pools.conf). It didn't take very long and
if anything needs to change is trivial to reconfigure now. As for
retaining a Full backup for so long, why is it so necessary if
I have a Full being created every month with a 3 Volume Retention and a
Time of 60d then there should never be a time when
there is no Full before Diff/Incr's, right? If I wanted a 180 day cycle
then would want to extend that to the incrementals and
diffs as well, right?

[Bacula-users] Scheduling Question

2011-03-30 Thread Randy Katz
Hi,

Now that I have used Bacula a full cycle (60 days) I have a question:

If backups are done Full (which expires after 60 days).
Then Diff each week and Incre each day where there is no Diff
Then restoring from any given date going back 60 days is not a problem
UNTIL the initial Full is replaced/overwritten. At that point all the
Diffs and Incre
up to the next Full cannot be restored (as far as I can see anyways) and
that makes
logical sense as there is no base to base the selection on. So how would
I retain the initial
Full until the next Full (let's say first Sunday 2 months later) cycles
back so not to
obviate all the Diff/Incre between?

If I am asking the question upside down please correct me. And please
bear with if
the answer is glaringly obvious! I reread this a few times and what I
really want is:

1st of month 1 Full
Diff each Sunday after
Incre each day other then Sunday
1st of month 3 Full
Expire the Initial Full when the 2nd one has no more increments (Diff/Incre)
before it.

Not sure how to translate to the schedule/expire times though.

Thanks in advance,
Randy

Please post the message when it needs to do a full backup again. Also,
if anything changed in your fileset
spec it will always do a full backup, that is the way it works, so if
you know you changed something, stop there,
and next time it should do an incremental. You can manually remove the
first Full if you need disk space.

Re: [Bacula-users] DebianSqueeze Installation Issue

2011-02-28 Thread Randy Katz

On 2/28/2011 12:17 AM, Dene Stringfellow wrote:
I am wondering if anyone could provide some assistance. I have just
upgraded Debian Lenny to Squeeze on my server and decided to try
Bacula to set up a disk-to-disk (initial full backup) daily
incremental backup using two (NTFS formatted) external drives rotated
on a weekly basis, so one disk is held off-site while the other is in
use. I'm not trying to back up clients at this point.

I ran the following command to install Bacula:

apt-get install bacula

The installation appeared to be successful although I did notice
during the installation process that SQLite appeared to be being
installed - surprising since I have an active MySQL server installation.

When I then went into the Webmin Bacula module in an attempt to start
configuring a backup I was presented with the following error:

Failed to connect to the Bacula database : Failed to load the database
DBI driver SQLite at ./bacula-backup-lib.pl line 44. Maybe it is not
set up, or the module configuration is incorrect.

... so I checked Module Config and tried changing the path to the
database to:

/var/lib/bacula/bacula.db

... but that didn't work either.

I checked online to see if anyone else had had a similar problem and
came across a post that recommended checking to see that the (DBI or
DBD) perl driver for mysql was installed. I checked and have the
following related perl modules installed:

libdb-file-lock-perl 0.05-3
libdbd-mysql-perl 4.016-1
libdbi-perl 1.612-1

Next I tried changing the database server to MySQL under Module Config
but that didn't work either as I get the following error:

Failed to connect to the Bacula database : Failed to login to the
database /var/lib/bacula/bacula.db : Access denied for user
'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO). Maybe it is not set up, or
the module configuration is incorrect.

I realise that the path to the database may now be incorrect as it is
the path to the SQLite database file.

I then tried changing the path to the database to:

/var/lib/mysql

but got a similar error:

Failed to connect to the Bacula database : Failed to login to the
database /var/lib/mysql : Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost'
(using password: NO). Maybe it is not set up, or the module
configuration is incorrect.

I then checked the Users and can see that a user called bacula has
been created (primary group = bacula; secondary groups = tape).

Then I checked MySQL Database Server (via Webmin) and can see that
there is no bacula database present and there is no bacula user listed
under User Permissions.

Any pointers as to what to do to try and get bacula configured and
started so I can get a backup up and running would be appreciated.

I understand your issue and had a similar one, what you should do is:

Make sure MySQL server daemon is up and running (if you will use MySQL,
if not use postgresql).

mysqladmin create bacula (of course you will need privileges to do this)
then /etc/bacula/make_bacula_tables
in /etc/bacula/bacula-dir.conf
make sure your line (search for dbname) is correct:

dbname = "bacula"; dbuser = "root"; dbpassword = "correct pass for root"

if you want to use the dbuser bacula make sure you have created it in
MySQL and used
the GRANT statement to give it permissions and updated the password for
the bacula database.

That should do it for you.

Randy

Hi, I believe in a normal install it is /etc/init.d/bacula-dir
Usage: /etc/init.d/bacula-dir {start|stop|restart|status}

[Bacula-users] Automated Disk Backup Question - I still don't understand!

2011-02-25 Thread Randy Katz
Hi,

This is bacula 5.0.3:

I have Pools set to the following:

Pool {
   Name = workstation1
   Use Volume Once = yes
   Pool Type = Backup
   LabelFormat = "workstation1-"
   AutoPrune = yes
   Volume Retention = 60d
   Maximum Volumes = 60
   Maximum Volume Jobs = 1
   Recycle = yes
}

I now have an intervention message that says:

25-Feb 12:53 workstation1-sd JobId 553: Job
Backup-Client-workstation1.2011-02-24_05.53.25_04 is waiting. Cannot find any
appendable volumes.
Please use the "label" command to create a new Volume for:
 Storage: "DeviceName-workstation1" (/disk1/bacula)
 Pool: workstation1
 Media type: MediaType-workstation1

I look and there are indeed 60 Volumes, I had assumed they would begin to
recycle but not sure
what that means at this point and have seen various discussions that are not
clear to me. My questions
are:

1. What would I need to do to get this backup to "work/backup"?
2. What could I do so that in the future when 60 Volumes is reached Volumes and
Disk
Space start to "recycle"?

Thank you in advance,
Randy

Hi again,

Try one Director and have it back up all your Clients, and see how it
goes. Yes you need
the open port and the special password, later if you want you can use an
encrypted key if
you are concerned about that level of security.

Hello Canary!

The best way to do it is to dump the mysql database periodically (I do
it nightly) and
let the scheduled backups pick up the dump (put it in a directory that
gets backed up).
This way you don't need to interrupt anything and the database is
portable to different
versions should you need to restore from a crashed system (and the
current version is
upgraded). I also do this with the bacula database on the Director even
though it gets
backed up by bacula, like this:

30 0 * * * /usr/bin/mysqldump bacula >
/usr/src/scripts/bacula.dump.mysql > /dev/null 2>&1

Of course you need to add the appropriate entries in ~/.my.cnf, mine
looks like this:

# more .my.cnf
[client]
user = root
password = SsEeCcRrEeTtPw
host = localhost

[mysql]
database = mysql

Randy

Yeah, I think if rsync could do this a lot of us would not be here:

Byte pattern differentials reduce CPU, disk and network utilization

I wonder what other "Client" backup software with this feature exists
out there?
The license for CrashPlan Pro starts at a 5 pack.

portions of files, to the best of my knowledge.

Since I have come to know many on this list are quite savvy how are you
all backing up your personal workstations? The ones that have 2-5GB data
and are not at the same location as your servers and are not on public ip
space for one reason or another. Currently I have been using a client

I am not sure I like to do full/diffs to a user account on one of my main

do, any feedback much appreciated, thanks.

[Bacula-users] Backing up VMWare ESXi / vSphere Hypervisor

2011-02-15 Thread Randy Katz
Hi,

I have a client who seems to want to build a cloud. Just curious if
anyone has installed and setup backups for
the VMWare ESXi or vSphere Hypervisor (same product different name as
far as I read) for Bacula. Understanding
this software does not sit on an O/S but is an O/S itself not sure how
it would be approached or whether individual
VM's/Machines would be backed up in this scenario. PS - I am already
familiar with Xen and OpenVZ installations
so referencing them in the answer would be great.

Thank you in advance,
Randy Katz

Thank you, and I understand your point, one can only hope that a program
like Bacula uses only basic
SQL and database specific features, however, there are always those

Hi, can you be more specific and state what the
problem/incompatibilities are? And of course what
patches and version of MySQL you are referring to?

Oh, I assumed all the debian based users were compiling from source. I
am sure anyone new to bacula would want
to run the latest version. At any rate easy enough to compile from
source, right? Not sure about gui and library support
though, I am sure someone can comment further, also ubuntu is
essentially debian, right?

If you do not want to port and make a compilation of 5.0.3 on Windows it
might be a good time for you
to install VirtualBox http://www.virtualbox.org/ , create a virtual
machine, and install a linux distro you
like (debian is widely used by the bacula people, I use CentOS some
libraries are a problem when it comes to
gui stuff but the base install (fd,sd,dir, bconsole) work well),
compile/install bacula and when you are comfortable

with it deploy a Linux machine.

My initial thoughts are:

a. Compile and Install Bacula from scratch with same configure options.
b. Copy the Volume Data to new machine.
c. Perhaps copy log info from /var/bacula
d. Dump Database on old machine, migrate dump to new machine,
reinitialize database tables and import database.
e. Copy conf files from /etc/bacula from old to new machine.
f. Do dns update for Director FQDN
g. Test

In this case I am assuming the machine name for Director will be the
same, the locations of files on Disk will be the same directory
names.

Is there something obvious I am missing? Should this work?

Thank you in advance,
Randy

[Bacula-users] How To Move / Migrate A Bacula Director - please

2011-02-03 Thread Randy Katz
I am happy to present this case to the list at this point in time!

My director does not have the correct disk capacities and must be moved
to a new physical
machine in order to be able to complete the cycle(s) at hand. The
Storage Devices are all
disk based.

What would be the best procedure/practice to move the Director to a new
physical machine,
assuming the new machine is setup and ready to go and has a new ip address?

Your comments welcome, thanks!
