Read up on Recycle/Recycling. And Retention.

NOTE: You'll want to keep at least one monthly backup at all times.
Do not let your previous backup expire before the new one is
completed.

[Bacula-users] Backup to file - delete on monthly basis

2007-10-09 Thread sgraves66

I have a full backup scheduled monthly and incremental daily. Since space is
limited, every month during the full backup, I'd like to completely delete
the prior months backups. At the moment, I'm doing this manually prior to
the monthly full. Is there a way to automate this process?

In the pool resource. And don't forget to update the existing volumes
after you reloaded the configuration.

Also it's worth carefully reading the description for the pool options
"Recycle Current Volume" and "Purge Oldest Volume".

Note that I strongly discourage a setup Scott is wanting: It's very
dangerous to delete the only valid backup when recycling volumes,
because when the job starts, you don't have any valid backup left.
What happens if this backup fails, or the backed up machine even dies
during the backup?

I can only recommend to read the mail from Chris on the subject of
"Bacula use any tape in drive." and then think if you really want such
a setup.

By the way - if you simply intend to overwrite one tape again and
again, Bacula with its catalog features and careful volume handling
and preservation is probably not the best tool to use. tar, dump, cpio
can be used for that more easily. You lose much of the security of a
good backup strategy, though.

You could recycle your volume files, set all retention (volume, job,
files) periods less than a month, set AutoPrune = Yes, Recycle = Yes and
set a limit to the pool Maximum Volume Bytes = xxx and Maximum Volumes =
y such that xxx times y matches the size you want to invest in your
backups.

Where to place all those directives? I don't know out of my mind, read
the manual as I would have to do to tell you ...
