That's definitely the solution I would vote for. There are scripts and
documentation available for moving in that direction... the other one is
generally less supported and no doubt you'll need to eventually upgrade
anyway.

Upgrading clients is generally foolproof anyway, incidentally. For
CentOS/RHEL machines in particular, I've just installed the new RHEL
package and everything's been fine.

Basically, the moral of the whole story is that the Director and Storage
Daemon need to be running the same version. For me, that's the same host
so this is easy to remember, but otherwise one must just keep it in mind.

I usually do this (upgrade the director first) at work and then slowly
upgrade the clients during their normal upgrade schedule. Also I have
to tell you that I have not pushed 3.X.X into my work network yet so
my testing of this has been limited to 1 director and 2 other clients
on my home network.

I'm pretty sure you can just upgrade the director and leave all of the
clients running 2.4. This would avoid having to do a downgrade, give you
the extra features of 3.0 on the director in case you might need them
somewhere and you can just upgrade those clients you want/need to.

There are several compelling reasons to use v3. One is if you come across
a windows server running volume shadow copy, you'll need a 64-bit file
daemon to run on it or VSS will crash. The only 64-bit builds of Bacula
are v3 and require a v3 director. There are also features like VirtualFull
backups which are nice.

Re: [Bacula-users] Possible to downgrade sd/fd from 3.0 to 2.4?

2009-11-30 Thread Paul Binkley
Sorry, Director is running 2.4.4 on CentOS 5.3. Storage Daemon is running
3.0.2 on a different CentOS 5.3 machine. Director and Storage are fine
together, but the 2.4.4 director cannot access the 3.0.2 fd (running on the
sd machine). This is all with sqlite.

Do you think upgrading the director is a better solution over the long-term
since the 3.0 director can talk to 2.4 clients?

Of note, I am having dependency problems while trying to upgrade director
from 2.4 to 3.0. Different issue I guess. I will pose that question in a new
thread based on your advice here.

Thanks!

You did not say what OS your 3.0 client was on. Also a 3.0 director
can talk to a 2.4.X client. At home I have this setup.

[Bacula-users] Possible to downgrade sd/fd from 3.0 to 2.4?

2009-11-30 Thread Paul Binkley
Hi Folks,

I hope someone can help. I have been using Bacula for a couple of months now
running 2.4 on the director and all client daemons, and 3.0 for the storage
daemon (my mistake). This has been working fine. The 3.0 file daemon isn't
compatible with the 2.4 director, so I need to downgrade.

It seems to be much more trouble to upgrade all the clients and the
director, so downgrading the sd seems to be the best option. Does anyone
have experience with this? What kind of trouble will I be getting into?

Thanks!
