Re: [Bacula-users] What does VolStatus = Error mean?

2011-01-27 Thread ml ml

What does VolStatus = Error mean? I might have restarted my Storage
Deamon whilst a Backup run was in progress. That might haved caused
 the error.
However, since i am using Autolabeling, i am running out of Volumes.
Are the Volumes now useless? If yes, how can i (over)write them again?

 Cheers,
 Mario

One of the benefits to upgrading to version 5.0.3 is that now when bacula
sees that the tape has one more volfile than the catalog it will simply
increment the catalog entry for that tape and continue using the tape.
Previous versions marked the tape as error and then bacula never appends or
 recycles it.

Upgrade and this pain will go away for you.  :)

Hmm..but i am already using Bacula 5.0.3 :)

Cheers,
Mario

What I was referring to was when it would find that the count of volume
files on the tape doesn't match the number stored in the catalog.

However, now that you mention it, I have also seen it where I get some sort
of a kernel error or scsi error (mostly due to the drive needing cleaning I
think) and then bacula marks the tape as status Error with a message of
something like can't find end of data. In those cases, change the status
to Full or Used and let it recycle the tape (or volume if you're using
bacula on disk) after the data on it expires and you'll be able to re-use it.

Now that I think about it... if you're using volumes on disk what would
really be handy would be a bacula volume repair utility, similar to how zip
files can be fixed if the have a small amount of data corruption. Of
course you'd still be likely suffering some data loss but it would be nice
to be able to fix the volume table of contents, delete the stuff that's not
very useful, and then mark the volume with status Append in some automated
fashion. Note that I'm not asking for this--I only use tapes-- but I could
see it as something somebody else might find useful at some point.

 What does it mean?

It means that no device suitable for that restore job is available.

 What device?

The previous messages should supply context.

 What machine, server or client?

Again -- previous log messages.

 Why?

I believe this is caused by another job using the device, and
this job has to wait on it.

Connect to the director and do status dir and status storage. Between
those two output, you should be able to ascertain what's going on.

I guess you running multiple jobs at the same time to different pools
on a file device. This is fixed in 1.37.??. Search the list archive.

The problem here depends on what version it is. If it is 1.36.x, then the
problem is that she is trying to mount two volumes on the same drive (yes,
Bacula disk backup mimics tape drives ...).

If it is 1.37, the problem is probably fixed in the latest CVS.

Actually, it's probably not yet fixed but is worked on getting fixed in
a thread on the developers list.
It seems to be some locking problem and if several jobs that needs to
change tape starts at the same time one job allocates the device and the
other fails (when it should wait/share it).
At the moment my workaround is to make sure the no tape (by executing
update slots which has the side effect of kicking out the tapes from
the drives) or the right tape is loaded before starting the backups. I
would stagger the start time but that's to much work for me so I'm
holding my breath for Kern to be fixed soon (as usual).

I'm working on it and have made a lot of progress. The good news is that I
now have simulated something similar and *finally* know what needs to be
done. The bad news is that some health problems have been dragging me down
for a month now, so programming is going at about half speed. For those of
you who are waiting for responses from me -- sorry, I'll get to them as soon
 as I can.

Peter, if you can pull the latest CVS (17Aug05 or later) and run the same
 test
producing only the SD debug log file as you previously did, it would help.
I've added more debug statements where I was lacking info, and I've,
hopefully, improved the reservation algorithm. I don't expect this version
 to fix everything ...
Actually, it seems like it made it worse, only waits.

I tried twice with the same result, only one job started and still
waiting to reserv tape. First time I waited at least 15 minutes with no
change.

Hopefully the second job waits (in something on or after 1.37.30). I haven't
tested it though.
