Re: Is there free will in the next world?

2006-06-07 Thread Benjamin La Framboise

Dear Friends,I'm no authority, but it seems to me that, even though I think it's pretty safe to say that tests and trials result from free-will choices that we make, not all options that we freely choose from are necessarily good vs. evil. When I give a gift to my children, a gift that I've created or bought, there's a whole-lotta free-willing going on in that process. However, I don't think my ultimate, freely-chosen choice, whether I choose to write a little note of affection on yellow, green, or blue paper will cause tests or trials.
Doesn't it say somewhere in the Writings that those in the afterlife can influence the goings-on of this world? I know that we can say prayers for the deceased, and that, supposedly, can be felt by those on THAT side of the thin membrane (right?); aren't we, too, affected by the actions (choices made) by those in the next phase of life? Perhaps we'll be able to choose, freely, to give gifts (of some sort or another) to our loved ones still here in this wombworld. Maybe we won't require tests and trials in the same way we do here. Maybe this seems like it 'limits' our choices, if we can only choose 'nice' actions, but it's not as if we really can choose to do ANYTHING we want here, either. I can't just choose to spontaneously give birth to a child, for example. So far, I can't move things around with my eyes.
Anyway, I guess I'm just trying to say that I don't know if an absence of tests and trials necessarily equals an absence of free-will. Sorry if I've rambled; I'm t-i-r-e-d.Ben

Re: Is there free will in the next world?

2006-06-06 Thread Richard H. Gravelly
Dear Tim: I would want to know if, in translation, there is a difference
between world of the Kingdom and next world. Sometimes, I believe,
next world is equivalent to world to come which in turn refers to the
next Manifestation.

Richard.

Abdu'l Baha has written:

. . . the tests and trials of God take place in this
world, not in the world of the Kingdom. (Selections from the Writings of
`Abdu'l-Baha, p. 194)

If there are no tests and trials in the next world, does that mean there is
also no free will? Most of the troubles in this world are the result of
people exercising free will.

A plant grows towards the sun. If it chooses of its free will to turn away

Re: Is there free will in the next world?

2006-06-06 Thread Gata

Dear Friends:

Although the following is not specifically from the Writings, but instead
from Hand of the Cause George Townshend who wrote an introduction to "The Hidden
Words" first English edition published inbythe National Spiritual
Assembly of the British Islesin 1932. Hewrites the following,
which makes very good sense to me. Perhaps others on this list may find
more pertinent quotations from the Writings on this subject, but I
thought that some of you might be interested in Mr. Townshend's explanation of
free will and its purpose in this world of existence.

Mr. Townshend states on page viii of the U.S. 1954 edition, in speaking
about freedom of will:

"The quelling of this ego, the severance from selfish desires is indeed the
essential task that confronts the aspiring soul. The final challenge to
the faithful with which Baha'u'llah closes this ethical word is: 'Let it
now be seen what your endeavors in the path of detachment will reveal.'"
The Creator has left this imperfection in man's constitution and given
him freedom of will to strive against it in order that man may, through his own
endeavor, 'become worthy to meet Me (God) and to mirror forth My
beauty.' Were not the ego there man could not earn praise and
reward; he might be spared test and trial but he would be a mere
automaton. This demand for effort, this privilege of choice, may make this
planet a place of torment but it makes earth-life a field of possible victory,
an area where moral attainment is really a man's own deed, won under the
beneficient law of justice by his own knowledge, determination, and
action. In the 'next world' this opportunity of achieving worthiness is
not given. Man, for his advancement there depends not on self-effort and
justice but on God's mercy. Therefore Baha'u'llah counsels man to seize
the opportunity here and now, for it will come to him no more. The fires
of hell, it is explained elsewhere, are the sense of priceless opportunities
thrown away and now lost forever."

Hoping that this is helpful to some.

Agreed, to turn towards the sun promotes the growth of the plant. We have
freewill and can align that will to God's will freely. The plant is not
free.
It still means to me that our freewill is important in both this world and
the next?

Is there free will in the next world?

2006-06-05 Thread Tim Nolan

Abdu'l Baha has written:"". . . the tests and trials of God take place in this world, not in the world of the Kingdom." Most of the troubles in this world are the result of people exercising free will. I do not mean that all troubles are due to malevolence. But, aside from natural disasters, the great majority of our pain and difficulties are the result of someone using free will. If souls have free will in the next world, how is it possible that there are no tests and trials there? It seems likely to me that we will not have free will in the next life. Re: Is there free will in the next world?

2006-06-05 Thread Chase Foster

I think this is a great question. I have never understood it that we
don't have free will but rather that our options are limited- i.e. we
have no choice but God's will.

Dear Tim,

I've always understood that we don't have free will in the same sense.
I think this is based on Abdu'l-Baha's statement that our progress in
the next world depends on God's grace rather than our own efforts.

 Abdu'l Baha has written:

. . . the tests and trials of God take place in this
world, not in the world of the Kingdom. (Selections from the
 Writings of
 `Abdu'l-Baha, p. 194)

If there are no tests and trials in the next world, does that
mean there is also no free will? Most of the troubles in this
world are the result of people exercising free will.
I do not mean that all troubles are due to malevolence. But,
aside from natural disasters, the great majority of our pain and
difficulties are the result of someone using free will.

If souls have free will in the next world, how is it possible
that there are no tests and trials there? It seems likely to me
that we will not have free will in the next life.
  What do others think?

  Tim Nolan
