Re: Smoking and Fasting
The Baha'i Studies Listserv > Why does Arabic/Persian use the same word for smoking as it doea for eating > or drinking? Probably because Arabic didn't have a separate word for smoke, so they just used the word 'to drink'. When did Muslims start considering smoking to be a violation of > the fast? as smoking was unheard of during Qur'anic times.. Muslims consider anything that passes your gullet during the fast to be a violation of it. Some think it a violation of the fast to even swallow your saliva. . Did Bab, > Baha'u'llah, or anyone else specify smoking in particular? rather than just > as an interpretation of the ban on eating and drinking? There is no such thing as 'just an interpretation.' If that interpretation comes from 'Abdu'l-Baha or Shoghi Effendi it is considered authoritative. warmest, Susan __ You are subscribed to Baha'i Studies as: mailto:arch...@mail-archive.com Unsubscribe: send a blank email to mailto:leave-491603-274...@list.jccc.edu Subscribe: send subscribe bahai-st in the message body to ly...@list.jccc.edu Or subscribe: http://list.jccc.edu:8080/read/all_forums/subscribe?name=bahai-st Baha'i Studies is available through the following: Mail - mailto:bahai-st@list.jccc.edu Web - http://list.jccc.edu:8080/read/?forum=bahai-st News (on-campus only) - news://list.jccc.edu/bahai-st Old Public - http://www.mail-archive.com/bahai...@list.jccc.net New Public - http://www.mail-archive.com/bahai-st@list.jccc.edu

Indeed. And we are exporting more tobacco these days than is being consumed in the U.S. Tobacco,by the law, is not a drug; therefore, the FDA has nothing to with its regulation.
