i'm always deeply grateful when i hear such things, and proud to be part of
such a profession.
in the meantime, 6100 tonnnes of opium in this year's afghan crop.

let's see, 6 billion people of opium using age...ruffly. so a tonne per
million people, 2 pounds per thousand people, 1 ounce per 32 people??? i'm not
good at math, but it seems like that's a little better than a gram per human
being able to hold a pipe...unless those are metric tonnes, in which it's a bit
uh...higher...:-)
any reports on soul killing by phillip morris?
a couple of grams is no biggie. nothing to get hung about. strawberry fields
forever.

I'm sure you're not surprise, are you Brent? Read Citadel of Faith and
find the Guardians graphic description of the moral downfall of
civilization. In our materialistic world there is only one golden calf
and it's *money*.

So we have the spectacle (because of lawsuits) of US cigarette
manufacturers running ads on American television directly discouraging
smoking among young people. So this assuages the consciences of the
American people, and cuts down on the lawsuits in American courts. Yet
these same cigarette companies have huge foreign advertising campaigns
designed to get many millions of young people around the world addicted
to cigarette smoking, particularly in developing countries where they
are the most vulnerable to the sophisticated advertising. It is a moral
crime of huge magnitude.

This is my understanding and my personal opinion.

h.
http://www.ers.usda.gov/Briefing/Tobacco/Data/table12.pdf.
suggests tht net exports in $us of tobacco from the usa are going down rather
rapidly.
other available data from gogle will show china, india, malawi as
likewise heavy growers.
the Baha'i Faith is neutral on tobacco. the Master Himself wasn;t very big on
it,...but thn, hehehehe, here we are right back at a thread i hit a few weeks
ago. the so-called Tablet of Purity makes it quite clear that opium is an
issue.
so why aren;t we talking about hmmm. how about this for example??
http://www.unodc.org/unodc/press_release_2006_09_01.html
i'm going to go out on a demographic limb here and guess that i am the only
member of this list to have smoked decent grade opium. as such, please allow me
to assure people that 6100 tonnes of opium is a lot of opium. who consumes it?
well, the iranians, actually, toke quite a bit, to the point that 12 step
programs are no longer harassed by th cops.
if all this ere a mattter of economics, the usa would be all for opium being
epxirted from afghanistan, since it tends to end up in nations the usa would
thorietically like to see less prodictive and effective.
  and yet:
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews/news/world/15654052.htm
i happen to have gotten a phone call last night from a lilitary wife
compaining about this situation. i explained to her that unless and until fair
trade for land usage and the >>full<< adherence to the Master's comments about
opium were in place, it's all just bidness.
but of course also yesterday, the city where i am currently camped banned
tobacco use in bars and restaurants, leaving me only able to walk 100 yeards
one way to get marijuana, shrooms, and exstacy, and 100 yards another to get
rock cocaine and heroin, but soon nowhere to walk or drive to sit someplace
sipping a mountain dew and smoking a cigarillo.
