2019-05-07 Thread Hermann Kelber
San Francisco based "Qadim Ensemble" google if you like
   attended this concert

one of the performer mention that Oud in Arabic/Hebrew was translated
   into
Western translation mistakenly in to the word lute
Is this understood and true for lute Music historian on the list? .
Also this Oud instrument played in the Middle Eastern countries don't
   have frets
since they don't have the chromatic tuning
   Any comments???

[BAROQUE-LUTE] Re: Conradi Sonata

2010-01-12 Thread Hermann Kelber
Michael Schaeffer actually recorded the A-major Conradi suite. I am fortuned
to a have his CD - recorded from the 70's

actually, he died in a care accident in a young age.

Walter Gerwig had a long illness and refused western medicine intervention,
because of his religious believe.

I hope I did not start an other quarrel on the list.

Normally I just listen, delete and practice the B- lute as much as my body
can hold up>>

Hermann

Sadly it was also his last. He was already very ill during the
recording and he died a few moths later.

I didn't know Conradi's music so thanks for sharing these beautiful
pieces.
I'd love to hear that Barto's bootleg!

I looked at the New Grove Dictionary of Music and found there are two
Conradi. Based on the publication date you give (1724), I guess these
works
are from Johann Melchior, son of Johann Georg, both Kapellmeisters at
Oettingen. Nonetheless, the New Grove doesn't mention any lute works by
them...

Hi-Can anyone comment on the type of lutes Gerwig used? I seem to remember
hearing that he used some kind of 10 course in ren tuning even for the
baroque music.

Did he make an effort to find the original tapes? That would of course be
the ideal.
I think a very worthwhile project. He was a wonderful player, and it's worth
noting
that these recordings were made with gut strings at least for the on board
strings.

Subject: [LUTE] Download Gerwig Recordings

Hello All,

A colleague at work (BBC Radio 3) is writing a doctoral thesis on
historical historical recordings, as it were - old recordings of early
music. He has an excellent collection of records, which he is in the
process of digitizing.

He's made some excellent transfers of a number of recordings which may be
of interest to us lutenists. They are out of copyright (at least, they are
here in the UK - I think the situation is different in the USA, so do be
careful that you are not breaking any local laws if you choose to download
them). The files are FLAC lossless audio - not compressed in the way that
mp3s are, but a completely faithful reproduction of the sound from the
vinyl. There are lots of shareware players out there that can cope with
FLAC files - Audacity, Winamp and VLC being three...

Walter Gerwig was, in my opinion, a very fine player - despite the dated
technique he gets a nice sound from his instrument. Very musical, if
favouring speeds which to me seem a little on the slow side, here he is
well-recorded and my friend Nick has cleaned up and de-clicked the
transfers with a light touch.

So here we have Archiv EPA 37078, with a couple of relative rarities:

Reusner Suite:
http://www.mediafire.com/?cq4qykxebtm

Hinterleitner Partita.rar:
http://www.mediafire.com/?y3ywnrjwn3d

If these prove to be of interest, I can also upload:

Archiv 13027a - Works by Mouton
Archiv AP 13022 - Bach suite BWV 995
Archiv AP 13031 - Works by Neusidler and Garsi da Parma

I hope that these are of interest - Nick has put quite a bit of work into
these transfers and I'm sure that he would value any feedback or
comments - I'll pass on any that I receive.

Also, if anyone can think of more old recordings of lute music, Nick would
be interested to hear about them, as they might fill gaps in his
catalogue.

Best wishes,

Peter

Barto's new Weiss Cd

2005-06-04 Thread Hermann Kelber
Hello Lute Gang,

Vol 6 Naxos 8.555722 Weiss CD played by R. Barto is a must for B- lute
players.

The recording dose not sound a like a electric guitar or banjo.

As a beginner I'm in no position to make critical commends of previous
recordings or other performers, of course.

The lute sound especially impressed me.I am not sure if the strings,
instrument, recording techniques or maturity of the performer are the
causes.
My favorite is the A major Sonata>>>>>
How many music stances and sliding benches do you need in a concert to play
the 7: 43 minute Courante??

enjoy the music - rather than get in to negative discussions
between Europe and the US.
Remember Barto is from Calif. and resides in Europe.
We all love the Lute which should unite us>

 all the best
Hermann
